Except my argument is barely anything Pacman has will be iconic to the average player. The only game worth caring about in the Pac Man series is the arcade classic. Which has no material.
But PacMan World 1 & 2 are both great games and are indeed worth caring about, and they have tons of material.
I don't know, I just don't like Pac-Man. He hasn't been relevant for ages and no one really likes him anymore, he doesn't exactly have a fanbase.
Think Megaman.
He was pretty much dead, lots of people were sad about it, and he got into Smash anyways.
Pacman isn't dead. But he's not really alive. And no-one really cares about him dead or alive. I guarantee that if he gets in, the response will be of apathy and disinterest, if not outright hostility.

How much of Mr. Game & Watch is iconic to the average player?
He's quite literally a composition of many LCD games Nintendo made and didn't do so hot of a job distributing.
How about R.O.B.?
The only things he ever did was look at a screen and move discs around on little platforms or spin different discs in holes.
Did Dig Dug grow a goatee or is that his mouth? :v:
Taizo's had a goatee for awhile now, I still think the more amusing trivia fact is how his son: Mr. Driller completely overshadows him in popularity and he's jealous as fuck because of it
Considering ROB was hugely important to getting Nintendo business during the video game crash and would be remembered by many old time players of Nintendo, and Game & Watch is a homage to Nintendo's roots...
They make a lot more sense in a Nintendo fighting game then an unrelated arcade game character.
I'd rather have a guy using Hanafuda cards then Pacman.

I have to give Sakurai and his team credit there: G&W and ROB are so much fun to play as, I hope they come back for this one too.

I think if Sakurai can afford to add Wii Fit Girl he can afford to add a classic, iconic character that, although isn't as big as he used to be, still has a huge part in gaming history.

I'm not talking about making sense. I'm talking about iconic representation.
Seriously, I want you to count the amount of people who instantly recognized R.O.B. and Mr. Game & Watch's roots before needing to look it up online.
Think Megaman.

While people obviously care more about Megaman, I can hardly say that I think he'd have more disinterest than the WFT. Besides, the original Pac-man is definitely iconic to Nintendo, and he has made some appearances on nintendo since (pacman world 1&2)
It's a pity Ubisoft and Nintendo don't really see eye to eye, and that really butcher's Rayman's chance of ever getting a spot
He's got tons of worthy moves and abilities to fit in too
And as for Pacman, I wouldn't mind him in Smash Bros as long as he had a nice moveset

Third party characters in Smash Bros. don't have to be a part of Nintendo history, that's why they are third party.

I recogniced ROB :v:
I did however not recognize Mr Game & Watch, but mom did
Say hello to the better namco representative character, Who had a game on wii but would also overall fit the game much better.

I want Rayman in too. Rayman's one of the first characters I think of when I'm asked, "what character would you like to see in Smash Bros."
Third party characters in Smash Bros. don't have to be a part of Nintendo history, that's why they are third party.
Out of all the third party characters we've had, Snake is hugely popular and incredibly relevant, Sonic has a long time rivalry turned friendship with Mario and Nintendo, and MegaMan is best known for the NES games he starred in.
PacMan is pretty much only remembered because of the arcade game to the point where most people who know him, know him from it, and is otherwise irrelevant to gamers today. He has no real connections with Nintendo.
He's pretty much a shoe-in, and I realize this. I just think he's really not that interesting.
edit: Mind you Sakurai HIMSELF says he stressed MegaMan's NES game appearance in his Nintendo Direct video. So even with a character like MegaMan he has to be the NES MegaMan, not some other spin-off.
Third party characters in Smash Bros. don't have to be a part of Nintendo history, that's why they are third party.
I think that's wrong.
They don't have to have been EXCLUSIVE to Nintendo, but all third party characters we've seen up until this point have been characters whose games started out on Nintendo.

Sonic says you're too slow.

What a douche
What a douche
Come on step it up.

Partly correct. Snake debuted on the MSX, and Sonic doesn't really require an explanation.
The only prerequisite for 3rd parties is that they have to have appeared on a Nintendo console.
Come on step it up.
NOW I'LL SHOW YOU
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
(I really think Sonic's cheesy voice-acting made his appearance so much better. If he said nothing he'd be acceptable but his over-the-top totally 90's attitude just perfects it)
Anyways, I think Snake might not reappear. I mean, he has a new voice in Kiefer Sutherland, and I dunno if Nintendo could afford him to do some voices for a relatively small fighting game. Kiefer is like a frigging huge star apparently. Sonic I think is safe, but I have my doubts about Snake...
Maybe Cooking Mama will make an appearance? :v:
Anything's possible at this rate.
You people ask what Pac-Man could possibly do in a fighting game, yet all Sonic can do is run and curl up into a ball. And they made him work.
PacMan is pretty much only remembered because of the arcade game to the point where most people who know him, know him from it, and is otherwise irrelevant to gamers today. He has no real connections with Nintendo.

Though his most iconic game is of course the first arcade version, I don't think it's a major issue if he used moves from the other games that have been on Nintendo such as the Pac man World games. Captain Falcon did after all not have any at all moves really iconic to his games when he was first added to Smash, and if I recall right plenty of Snake's moves were based on his more recent appearances than just his abilities in his retro games.
edit: Mind you Sakurai HIMSELF says he stressed MegaMan's NES game appearance in his Nintendo Direct video. So even with a character like MegaMan he has to be the NES MegaMan, not some other spin-off.
This is a good point, but we don't know for sure that Sakurai feels this way about every character, or if it's just Megaman that he really wanted the focus to be on making him feel exactly the same way as his iconic appearances in the old games

Awesome... then this paves way for the possibility of this newcomer :v:

I recognized both Game & Watch and R.O.B . I did not recognize the fire emblem characters though.
But at this point, we should not make any opinions till we see gameplay of Pac-Man in action. I still think it's a forced appearance but oh well. :v:

(that's because their games weren't even released overseas until after melee)
You people ask what Pac-Man could possibly do in a fighting game, yet all Sonic can do is run and curl up into a ball. And they made him work.
Kinda. All he did in Brawl was run around and curl up into a ball.
(that's because their games weren't even released overseas until after melee)
Oh yeah, I remember them saying that they were suppose to be japan exclusive but shipped everywhere anyway.
Kinda. All he did in Brawl was run around and curl up into a ball.
Sonic's moves were based off the not very well know Sonic Fighting Game on the GBA.
