I just assumed the hesitance on Nintendo's stance on Sheik was mostly because having Sheik as Zelda was a major plot point of OoT, if they were leaning towards male, i would've thought they'd say so just because of avoiding to spoil the game. Out-Of-Smash wise, i would assume it's a full change but with most of the Zelda persona suppressed, Zelda would probably try to make herself fully convinced she's not Zelda hence the shift from Magic into some sort of Ninja/Assassin schtick. Probably boil it down to androgynously male on the outside, but female underneath, but still biologically female. would've thought Zelda went into hiding over the 7 years Link was gone anyway, she'd probably has to avoid direct contact in her Zelda form until the time requires it...timeline balancing?
