So apparently Sakurai confirmed that the two versions will have the same characters.
I can't wait for the Wii U version to be less then what it could be because the 3DS can't handle some content :V
I wanted to see 2 Smash games, not one smash game on two consoles.
I also want Brinstar Depths and Fourside back...
Also Pokefloats
Also Venom
Also Fountain of Dreams
Also Tournament Mode will be viable again thanks to cross-platform play

With the relatively high amount of space to work with, I'd be remiss if they decided to not cram most of the Smash Bros stages into this version.

How would I go about installing that as an alt color instead of the main skin?
nvm got it
Looks like Sakurai is considering now Wii U exclusive characters because of programming issues on the 3DS with characters in the vein of Ice Climbers.

Unless you use cBliss you have to replace one of his original costumes.
Google how to do it, it's pretty simple (unless you haven't hacked your Wii yet).

You mean... a duo?

Speaking realistically though, if they're doing another duo character in the same vein as Ice Climbers, my best guess is either Baby Mario and Luigi, Kat and Ana, or Plusle and Minun.
EDIT: Dixie and Kiddy could work nicely too.

I play Project M so replacing files is really simple.
I don't know about anyone else, but I expect us to get a Tales series representative due to Namco's presence. If not a fighter then definitely as an assist trophy. If I had to guess who, I'm inclined to say Lloyd from Symphonia 1 & 2, as they were only released in the west on Nintendo consoles, as of the moment, which would bode well with nintendo. However you could also mention reps from any of the huge roster.
Either way, I would love to see a character represent the series though I doubt it would be Guy ;_;

I knew it. The Wii U only pictures of Villager confirmed it.
Would that mean the 3ds version could get some exclusive characters too?
I think the Assist Trophies should be the sort of "Cadet" ranking for Smash characters.
For example, a lot of people want Travis Touchdown.
IMO, he could work as a trophy, but he doesn't have the clout to be a full-fledged character. You could have Professor Layton, Chrono, even Pac-Man as Assist Trophies.
On a side note, I really really want the Elite Beat Agents to become a character, but I know it'll never happen. Just three dudes moving together in a group, attacking with coordinated dance moves. The final smash makes every character dance to a remix of the theme song for whatever stage they're on, then deals tons of explosive damage or something neat like that.

-3DS version gets Handheld-themed characters like Professor Layton and Palteuna, Wii U gets console-themed characters like Toon Zelda and the guy from Wonderful 101.
I can dig it.
Dillon from Dillon's Rolling Western 3DS exclusive character. Do it nintendo.
That and the fact that console-exclusive characters would make people want to buy both versions of the game.
Works for Pokémon.

But that would mean Wii U wouldn't get Elite Beat Agents ;_;
Also let the Smash community vote on Assist Trophies. They're not as major as characters, but the voting would be influential enough to give the playerbase an impact in development.

A lot of it has been retracted though.

Apparantly this was retracted as well, but Kotaku didn't take it down or edit it.
Also, Super Smash Bros FO(u)R Wii U and 3DS
I'm gonna miss Toon Link. He was what I always wanted in Link: To be fast.
His down air is fucking decimating and accurate as hell.
Hopefully they do bring Majora's Mask Link
How about they just buff Link to be faster?
Speaking of Toon Link, I kind of miss Young Link.
I can't remember how Young Link played tho. Wasn't he just a clone as well?(that was faster)
From what it sounds like at E3, Sakurai is trolling reporters who ask him questions. We won't probably get a solid answer unless it is from Nintendo.
What's the point of making the two games have the same characters? It has different stages, different visuals, and it won't have cross-platform play. Why can't they be separate?
Regardless, the idea of a Smash Bros game on a handheld sounds dangerous to my health.

It WILL have Cross Platform play.
I just saw the whole "Inbetween casual and hardcore" thing.
Perfect. What I exactly wanted, and that, combined with Villager and Classic Megaman is already making this my favorite in the series.
Especially if Chrom and Mewtwo get in.
It WILL have Cross Platform play.
This may be an unpopular opinion but some people don't have a wii u and probably wouldn't be able to afford it
i think a mobile smash bros is pretty cool even for wii u users who wanna play on the go so its better to have both then none at all
Since each version of the game has completely different stages, cross-platform play wouldn't work, he told us through an interpreter. Each version will interact with one another, however, as announced back in 2011. Specifically, players will be able to take characters they've customized and transfer them to the Wii U version.
Also
Different costumes, he said, would take away from what makes each character unique.
It could also be a language barrier issue.
