Eh, I think it adds character,
I think he means the dark spots straight up won't show up because these elements are additive in game.
also, @ font issue. What about a happy medium?
Will this mod run on my 486?
Sadly not, however, your 486 is perfect for spreadsheets.
it'd be a neat addition for this 7 seg display hud to display an error when the player dies.
something like the following perhaps? (excuse my shit mockup)

I think it should do what Deus Ex: HR does if it's going to do that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH6s1hbwoQQ
Is that thing going to be released or is it internal to this?
Source desperately needs this.
I have plans to release it. I did spend about a week exploring a much more flexible and almost entirely automated correction technique, but the storage and performance requirements are unfeasible at this time, so I guess OBB correction is the way to go for now. It just needs integration into the LightmappedGeneric shader.
I can probably get it integrated into the 2013 SDK's version of that shader soon, as I have that sdk running and everything. Also doing that would get me used to working with combo variables and stuff, making it easier to integrate into other versions of lightmappedgeneric (i.e. ASW's).
If you're trying to simulate a HUD you probably should drop the dark unlit elements—real HUDs are additive only.
Except for Half-Life, where nearly every HUD element has a darkened rectangular background to it.
it'd be a neat addition for this 7 seg display hud to display an error when the player dies.
Error-404 Player not found?
the "blob" is a shield. I assume he gives you armour points.
I didn't know what it was until you pointed it out. Well, if he gives you armor, wouldn't it make more sense for him to have a lightning bolt over his head, like the battery icon or glitchvid's hud mock-up?
Or would that just make people think he's turning into Captain Marvel?
Except for Half-Life, where nearly every HUD element has a darkened rectangular background to it.
I thought the rectangular backgrounds were separate elements.
I was referring to real-world HUDs, where you physically can't darken anything with projected light.
I was referring to real-world HUDs, where you physically can't darken anything with projected light.
Put some window tinting on your glasses and suddenly it's the easiest thing in the world.
Do you think you guys will add parallax mapping for bricks and stuff? NVM, my eyes missed it
I don't think we will, It's a LOT of work to author a good looking parallax heightmap, and it's effect isn't too convincing: if anything it would be used on only specific things that it could help.
wow we're almost to page 100
I was referring to real-world HUDs, where you physically can't darken anything with projected light.
Makes me think... Maybe those dark blocks on the HUD could be spots on gordon's glasses of darkened rough translucent material to make the projected elements easier to read. Maybe the background could be a bit blurred behind the dark spots to simulate diffused light.
or some shit I don't know it's your fuckin mod fuck you
I don't think we will, It's a LOT of work to author a good looking parallax heightmap, and it's effect isn't too convincing: if anything it would be used on only specific things that it could help.
Plus default source parallax effect is kinda shit... It's that old solution where shit gets all warped and shit, unless you guys implemented something else.
I was referring to real-world HUDs, where you physically can't darken anything with projected light.
Yeah, I was thinking of justifying it by maybe explaining that they're actually on the visor or something (So when they're not lit they block just a bit of light), but It's the way it is because I think it looks good: It's probably not going to be the hud we use anyway.
I thought the rectangular backgrounds were separate elements.
They disappear & reappear with other HUD elements. Just look when you scroll through the inventory.
I was referring to real-world HUDs, where you physically can't darken anything with projected light.
So that musn't be what it is.
Put some window tinting on your glasses and suddenly it's the easiest thing in the world.
Because we all know Gordon Freeman wears sunglasses.

Surely he does.

Surely he does.
Or those sunlight reactive eyes?
Because we all know Gordon Freeman wears sunglasses.
Because I totally meant all of his glasses instead of a rectangle in the bottom left/right.
I was referring to real-world HUDs, where you physically can't darken anything with projected light.
It's worth noting that there are transparent displays that can fill with opaque black, and display light on top. Samsung showed this off at CES 2012. It might not be as far out of reach as you'd think.
Because I totally meant all of his glasses instead of a rectangle in the bottom left/right.
Because I totally hadn't addressed that already:
They disappear & reappear with other HUD elements. Honestly, ever since we started talking about the HUD I feel like I've gotten non-stop Disagrees & Dumbs. Whenever someone suggests something to make the HUD look older & more low-tech because it, in some way completely unknown to me, fits the game better, I point things out as contradicting other hud elements that actually are already in the game. For some reason my logic is always simply shrugged-off as being 'opinion' or that it simply doesn't matter because it's "just a game," as if that somehow elevates your own opinions on the basis of being "cool." What is it I can do to make my posts more agreeable, without agreeing when I don't or simply ignoring what bothers me?

Wow calm down.
I'm pretty much the only one here who's doing the older style shit, and at this point it's more of a pet project, I can pretty much assure you it won't show up ingame: We'll probably go with something resembling the current hud.
Honestly, ever since we started talking about the HUD I feel like I've gotten non-stop Disagrees & Dumbs.
Thats because people don't agree with you.

That's because it is an opinion. Just like how other people have the opinion that the low-tech elements do fit. Just because you have reasoning behind your opinion doesn't elevate it to a fact, everybody has reasoning behind their opinions.
...or that it simply doesn't matter because it's "just a game," as if that somehow elevates your own opinions on the basis of being "cool."
Pulling out the "because it makes you think you're cool" card is a real easy way to kill any kind of point you're trying to make. All you're doing is insulting people, which is only going to make them disagree with you more.
What is it I can do to make my posts more agreeable, without agreeing when I don't or simply ignoring what bothers me?
You can't make your posts more agreeable if you don't agree with the majority of the posters in the thread. That's just how it works. As it turns out a lot of people like the low-tech HUD, so why would you expect them to agree with you when you tell them it doesn't fit?
A lot of people have a different opinion of "what fits" than you do. Your opinion isn't any more or less valid than theirs, but there simply aren't as many people who agree with you.
Honestly, ever since we started talking about the HUD I feel like I've gotten non-stop Disagrees & Dumbs.
Maybe because people actually disagree or think your posts are dumb? It's not a hard concept to grasp.

Do you like, think the world revolves around your opinion or something?
What is it I can do to make my posts more agreeable, without agreeing when I don't or simply ignoring what bothers me?
You can stop acting like you're right and everyone else is wrong, because that just makes you look like an annoying asshole. It seems like your logic is along the lines of: If a hundred people want something, but one person doesn't, it shouldn't happen.
[editline]lol this discussion is entertaining[/editline]
Also read what glitchvid said.
Why are we still talking about the HUD
There are better things to complain about in HL2
Like the Gravity Gun.
Because I totally meant all of his glasses instead of a rectangle in the bottom left/right.
maybe those rectangles are just tattooed onto his eyes

"I don't agree with anyone, why doesn't anyone agree with me?"
Will this mod be getting Phong for the map textures themselves? I have always found it odd that models can get phong, but the map textures are stuck with simple cubemaps.
