Truthfully I'm having trouble articulating what I disliked about your 2013 Demo Reel particles, but I'll give it a shot. The smoke particles you used with the headcrab canister looks to opaque, especially since the soft-paricles don't work well. It makes the smoke look thick & dark, but the environmental geometry sticks through it & is significantly lighter. Pause 0:06 seconds in to see what I mean. The smoke in the following segments look better, but that might be because the there's no environmental geometry. With the Cryengine 3 experiment, I can't tell if that's what it's supposed to be, but is the fire supposed to be in rows? I can't really explain what it is about the fire particles that seem off to me, but they don't appear to mesh very well, as if I can see the fire particles overlapping each other in both clips, not just the one with the rows. The muzzleflashes look pretty good, but again the flashes seem a too opaque & the smoke to big/thick. The AR2 muzzle flash also looks oddly large. The explosion of the barrel by the APC seemed way too big & I'm not keen on the ropes of smoke that come out, especially with how they penetrate the environmental geometry. I have similar thoughts about the rest of it, but you've gotten the idea.[/QUOTE]

Yours seems smaller around the shoulders than some of the others I've seen. Has this helped at all with posing the arms?

the bullet holes in source use this mod2x blending shader which basically lightens or darkens the texture underneath based on how light or dark a texel is in the decal texture so it looks like it has depth

I've got two complaints with the particles. One of them is the muzzle flash. It may look cool, but fireballs don't come out of your gun when you shoot. Just tone it down a little and it should be fine.
Also, explosions. They look like fireballs - in my opinion, that fx would only fit, say, an exploding fuel canister or something like that, but not a simple explosion. The default explosion looks better imo.
Just my two cents... all in all the new particles look better than the default, good work on that.
I had some free time and thought that the RPG model should be like this. So, what do you think, guys?

I am asuming you meant "I'm a beginner", rather than "The model is near the beginning", because you're taking so long to create such a simple shape (I don't consider myself at all proficient in hard surface modelling, but I could recreate what you have made so far in half hour tops)
I think it looks fine personally, but I can't tell the difference between a good model and a bad model in these early wip renders. They all look like the same rounded shapes to me :v:
There's nothing wrong with it, it's just a very long time to take on a cylinder with some extrusions.

Eh, I liked how it was turning out before better, though this is sorta getting more detailed, it looks nothing like the HL2 RPG and looks more like a chess piece. Just take what you had before, add in the indentation and those "rings" on either side of it, add some more small details on the high poly, perhaps some scratches too, it should look pretty nice then.

He's not a beginner by any means, go check out his gamebanana page, though he hasn't modeled in a long time according to there, so I assume it's taking him a little while to re-adjust to the programs. Also, there are things called lives, people have them, and they take priority over everything in mods. I for one sit down to start texturing something, and almost immediately get called away to go do something else a lot of the time. By this point I'm just glad someone's actually making progress on models.
