Well it's a block of wood now
It makes more sense anyway having it being made of actually crossbow parts with some added bits
It seems I and only a few others are the only ones that didn't think the original crossbow was wood, or like the decision of changing it to wood...

I don't know, it having a wooden body just seems a lot cheaper, which is why I think the rebels would use wood rather than metal.

I think I assumed it was wood, but know I know it was made of those metal pipes I prefer that. It makes it more cobbled-together from existing parts instead of fashioned for purpose, which is the Resistance in a nutshell.
Just added the and some stuff here and there. And the "indentation" is meant to look like that.

So, can I call it done?

Most of the spare scraps of wood in HL2 are pretty rotten, I don't think you'd want to use those for the main part of a weapon, especially when you have a ton of stronger, more stable pieces of metal lying around.
I thought it was simply an "enhancement" all along, and I don't even play that much half-life.
going back to the xbow (again :D), wouldn't a metal base make more sense than wood? the crossbow's bolts are superheated to the best of my knowledge and that shit would probably melt or at least partially disfigure a wooden base?
I don't think you'd want to use metal because metal is a great conductor and there is a rather big electric power source on that weapon
the crossbow was not very well thought out it seems. thanks valve

Gordon's wearing a hazard suit which has gloves. Even the rebels wear gloves, so that's not much of a problem.
Another thing is the weapon is partially heated under the rod- wood would just burn or even catch fire if it was wood there when the bolt's put in place.
yeah but if the entire thing's made out of the same material it's going to give the same electric resistance all around leading to the whole thing uniformly heating (red hot)
not to mention that gordon still takes electric damage under the suit
personal preference though seeing neither option make very much physical sense
The only solution is to have the crossbow made of marble.

I don't think Rebels have to worry about how cheap wood is. It isn't like they can stop at the local Home Depot and buy some wood :v:

Nah, Xen crystal. Only way to be sure.

You still need to make the back end into more of a cone, model in the blast cap, button etc. and make the grip more detailed- as stated earlier: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1263005&p=42200549&viewfull=1#post42200549

can you give what can add in the grip ?can you give me ref for this, and where "model in the blast cap" I can't see in ref.

It might need a texture

Not cheaper as in you pay less, but cheaper as in easier to work with. With metal you'd need to find good pieces of it, cut and and then make holes in it. Not exactly the fastest and most efficient way, I'd imagine.
Both make as much and as little sense as the other one, it's just personal preference at this point.

Why is the hole at the front not in the center of the octagon? I mean really... this can't be right!
Also, what about the real geometry? The geometry that'll be used in game, triangle polygon wireframe n shit. Not this sexy looking smoothed stuff that you can't use in games.
^dude plz. Y-you can't... just plz. No, man. Plz.
I thought it was simply an "enhancement" all along, and I don't even play that much half-life.
Then you missed my speech. There is no such thing as a simple "enhancement."

Not quite, but can you send me the model (and textures if you've made 'em) currently?

Looks like I have to repeat myself. the hole is a floating geometry. It looks like this from this perspective.
I think by the "in-game geometry" you mean the low-poly? as soon as the model finished, modified and baked into a low-poly, I'll post a screenshot of it.

Sorry, still needs more work.

It's the high-poly model he's making first, then he'll do low-poly. As for textures, I or one of the other members will be doing those.

I'm just assuming it's called a blast (or blast through) cap.

As for the handle, something like this (but with a trigger) might be cool:

I imagine though black mesa east has some room(s) where makeshift weapons are made?

Maybe that's why all the crossbow users are dead before we find them, and the only living crossbow user is the guy wearing the power armour? :v:
With regards to the crossbow, I imagine the heating element is an induction heater in the crossbow's hollow body. The battery current would go through a transformer (maybe salvaged from a computer power supply), and the alternating current's frequency would be tuned to provide maximum heating for the steel rebar.
Induction heating is actually surprisingly precise:

(This would still be a damn clever bit of engineering, given carbon steel's melting point, but given that humanity can build teleporters from scrap, it's not that unbelievable.)

To clarify, I was simply talking about the wooden texture on the crossbow. Kinda jumped a page involuntarily. The mod looks great, though.
The only solution is to have the crossbow made of marble.
No, the crossbow needs to be made of rubber and jiggle every time it shoots. We can do it with Source's physics.
make crossbow bolts shoot out of you urethra
Just make everything solid gold.
