VMTs suck in comparison to the better trend of flowgraph/node-based material editing like what unity and unreal have way more intuitive and versatile
You can technically do that with source (Actually, by using the Shader Editor); but I see what you mean. The problem currently (And correct me if I'm wrong) is that the shaders in source aren't nearly as consistent as they should be. A lot of the parameters work on SOME shaders and are broken when certain parameters are input. An overall more robust shading system would be a godsend, but the ability to just open a textfile to see how something was done should also be retained.
Maybe I have high expectations, but if Source 2 is even halfway to what I'm hoping for, porting would require a lot of effort and resources. And Valve's track record of porting things to another version of the same engine is bad. Like really bad. There are problems with HL2 that still aren't fixed, little details here and there that were broken and no longer show up. One that comes to mind are the APC's driving around the bridges during Route Canal.
Source 2 can't technically be a new engine. If the renderer was different, then it wouldn't be Source Engine anymore. This is obviously Valve's plan all along; to say "We're just waiting for a game to release on Source 2" THEN hype the shit out of HL3 and pretend it's not done yet. Valve is just hyping up they're new engine. When you think about it, Source 2 is just Valve's fancy marketing excuse by literally UPDATING SOURCE 1 and modernizing (adding MISSING tech) it to compete with UE3 and whatnot. There's really no new features, it's just another opportunity to modernize old tech and make it sound new.

Of course if I said that I would be wrong, cause compared to goldsrc, source is absolutely amazing. And we can expect a similar type of updating with source 2, improving graphics, dynamic lighting, physics, etc.
In all honestly I just haven't posted much because people have been so anal lately. This used to be a fun-loving thread, not sure what happened though. I guess people saw things being worked on and formed their own very narrow ideas on how the mod should proceed, eh.
Yeah, on V2 I was laughing nearly the entire time, and now... uh...
Yeah, on V2 I was laughing nearly the entire time, and now... uh...
Well to be fair, and I know people here will want to violently murder me simply for mentioning the word progress, but it was so fun because looking back at those threads, the team was always doing something, whether it be actual mod progress or just showing something goofy or glitched involving the modding process. Now there is kinda nothing, thread is mostly dried up. I mean yeah, snood is working on what looks like a promising police model, but we haven't even heard any more from that since a week. Now people here don't really have much to discuss but topics from a month ago which has already been discussed raw. And a discussion on anything begins to cause irritation after too long.
Why does there need to be progress made all the time, or at any time? Let them do their work. No one owes you or this thread anything. If there's no progress, don't post about it. You don't need to post here. No one needs to. Everyone really needs to stop talking for once.

One, you clearly didn't read the whole post. "whether it be actual mod progress or just showing something goofy or glitched involving the modding process." basically saying anything at all, not even progress. Two, everyone needs to stop talking for once? It's a thread. Discussions is literally the only purpose there is to this formats existence.
I read the post. I don't get why you guys need progress. It would be one thing if you guys were like, "Hey! Got any updates for some eager fans?" Instead, you guys are like, "There hasn't been an update for a month and things look grim. We might even have to pull the life support and tell the mother the mod's gonna die." It's not something to fuss over or really even bring up. Things happen. Progress slows down at times. It's a third-party mod by a group of fans. This is going to happen. Move on. Do other things. Look at other threads. Start a discussion about something that is constructive. What doesn't help is when you we start a discussion about non-progress. It's not fruitful in any way, especially when it's been discussed over and over again. On this page, the discussion about amping up the way VMT's are created sounds awesome. Nothing really went astray until someone brought up the V2 thread. This is evidence for my argument that you guys should stop.

You're the one who kinda blew it out of proportion with "nobody owes you anything" or "everyone needs to stop talking for once". Can you even name anywhere in my post where I begged for progress or something of the sorts? I'm just simply stating the threads a bit dry. You're stating that everyone is now begging like children for an update.
I'm not continuing the argument for the sake of keeping on track with the discussion.
People please, by arguing about the arguments, you're creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.
I mean yeah, snood is working on what looks like a promising police model, but we haven't even heard any more from that since a week.
Probably because Snood has a 9-5 job and a life outside of modding.

I'm not worth to be alive
Seeing the strider cast a shadow on the wall in that alleyway scene was cool though. Makes it totally fit way better in the scene I always felt was underwhelming compared to what it was meant to be. I didn't like the scene originally. It was basically a giant muppet in the way it was presented. That shadow adds way more than I thought it would. Maybe y'alls should amp that shit up >.>

Seeing that video makes me wonder, is that lost coast demo thing still happening?
Seeing that video makes me wonder, is that lost coast demo thing still happening?
We've got to get the textures for that sorted, now that we have multiblend; we're planning to do a nice coast revamp, something with the artistic consistency that Dear Esther had, but with the unique and harsh contrast look that Half Life had to it. I want to get working on textures, but I feel like mine are shit, and so I've been filling my time with other things: consulting, starting a new gaming community, setting up servers, and the like.
Should I redirect my modelling to the Lost Coast demo?

The bottom part of the texture looks a little low quality, but the rest is absolutely perfect.
Here's your promised texture (walls): -still working on a bump map and a specular.
Gonna reserve judgement until the bump/specular is ready, but I'm cautiously optimistic.
I like how it has real grunge. Not fake grunge.

I'm just asking this assuming they're all being made with the same base texture, forgive me if im wrong

That was a good call on the stripped plaster.

The texture looks fantastic, but the cracks were a pretty noticeable part of the original design (in a good way and in a bad-tiley way).

Yeah the new texture looks great, even without normals and a spec. Decals would definitely spice up the hallway of course.
