Wild Combine Shotgunner appeared!
Go! Free Man!
Wild Combine Shotgunner used Shotgun!
...It's not very effective...
Gordon Freeman pulled out his SMG and crouched!
Wild Combine Shotgunner used Shotgun!
But it missed!
Gordon Freeman used SMG fire!
It's super effective!
Are you guys gonna put more Combine Shot-Gunners in? They are really effective and do high-damage, I don't know why the Combine didn't use more of them.

They're like really overpowered compared to the others actually. At least indoors.
They're so good at shotgunning they can fire a pump shotgun like a jackhammer.
Maybe there should be an automatic function for the shotty, though single-barrel only.
Half-Life 2 needs to be more Serious.

Exactly.
I have bad memories of the HL1 Shotty Marines.
HECU Shot-gunners were the best. You're just a scrub.

You realize that every time you say that, we're just gonna get even further off topic, right?

Could always bring a mod in then.
Okay. Wow. What the actual fuck happened here.
Here I thought the whole stream of shitty suggestions was over, since it dwindled down to the dumb idea of stealth yesterday. But no, if anything, it's even worse now. I gathered most of them are actually sarcasm or some other shit, but ironic shitposting is still, in fact, shitposting.
You're not helping the mod do anything with your ridiculous ideas. And the people that are for real, you need to go play HL2 again and understand what that game is about. I could try explaining it, and I actually will, but I doubt you will before you go play it again and see for yourself.
Half-Life 2 is excellent in game design AND the storytelling. They intertwine in a way few games actually do, since everything you do is actually reflected in the game. There are no cutscenes where Gordon of the Freeman family does something he can't in game; he's a blank slate for you to fill yourself and live through the story. Which is special too, since it's actually a straight line with no pauses where you experience a whole journey. But what made the game even better is not the great plot, since even though it is good it's not actually excellent enough to carry the game on it's own. No. The game is coupled with some of the greatest game design I've ever seen.
Half-Life 2 dwells in it's raw gameplay feeling. You can move in any direction and basically you have freedom of movement and can go anywhere where the map isn't cut off, even if it requires glitches to do that. But above all, the gameplay has this fast-paced Quake-style feeling to it, even though it does manage to pace itself down to tell an interesting story. But that's all there is to it, you going from battle to battle, experiencing the world and people in it firsthand without anything in between. There's no PRESS A TO JUMP OVER shit, no cutscenes where you cannot move. All that it has, is from your perspective. Hell, you can even just skip most of that stuff and go kill combines; that's great and all, nobody's stopping you. When you start adding more layers on how to experience the game, like stealth or fucking lockpicking, you start to lose the raw feeling, what essentially makes the game what it is. You feel less and less like you're there, doing what you want, and more like you're controlling someone else doing something you'd rather not do.
But my message above all is the fact that this is the ENHANCEMENT MOD. It is not the add more unnecessary shit to HL2 mod. The point is to improve, mostly visually, but in some places with slight gameplay adjustions. The point isn't to rewrite it, not to make it longer. It's to make it as close to Valve's vision of it, while still making it better. If you have ideas; great. But if they're shot down, they are done so for a good reason. If people here say no, don't bother explaining why your idea is good; it's not.
I would say lengthening the game is okay in some parts, but for the most part you shouldn't be adding entire new sections. For example chapters, or completely new maps.
Maybe in the sense that instead of having one section as it is, make it into two parts and making them be longer.
There are some parts I wish were made longer but due to the limitations of source I understand why they were like that at the time.
Also, for the mapping part, I would VERY much like to see smoother things. Buildings look really square and choppy, I'd actually like to see the parts that are meant to be rounded off actually be rounded off, model or otherwise.
I also want to see more activity in the world, before you get to the shitstorm that gordon kicks up.
By that I mean at the start. There's some activity, but I want to see at least twice as many citizens doing things. I want to see a couple of them playing chess, two guards "chatting" at a distance but out of ear shot, maybe when you get out of the train station and you see the citizens and the plaza, perhaps a few metrocops marching through a checkpoint you can't get past would make an interesting feel. Or a soldier leading 4 metrocops behind him, in two pairs behind the soldier.
It's the little things, and it would make it seem more like an actual Takeover is still apparent while there still being some form of human activity.
But the visual part really has to be done well, as if it was made the same way but in todays skillset.
Asking people not to shitpost here is like telling them not to breathe

At least then they wouldn't be able to shitpost
on a semi-serious suggestion, will there be a lean feature?
on a semi-serious suggestion, will there be a lean feature?
HL2 aint balanced for lean
Can the OP have a big all-caps header that says something like "WE AREN'T CHANGING THE GAMEPLAY STOP GIVING HORRIBLE SUGGESTIONS" or something?
That'd be nice.
HL2 aint balanced for lean
theres not really good reason to add that

As I said before, I honestly don't think there's anything wrong with suggestions, even if they're dumb. What is sad that most of you guys can't seem to see why your idea is held as a bad one, and instead keep on banging on about it instead of moving on. It makes the whole thread standstill and usually evolves from pointless argument to complete shitposting; something which has happened here already (multiple times)
I've never seen a thread quite like this when it comes to suggestions. one bad suggestion, and it's all out war for 10 pages.
maybe fat-corgi-guy or anyone on the dev team could throw in a post saying this will be added, maybe be added or won't be added to mark the end of a pointless discussion?
People who want full conversation mods should go to ModDB.

Instead of making posts arguing/complaining about stupid suggestions, how about you guys just ignore the suggestions if they come off as stupid and continue talking about not stupid shit like probably every other forum.

That's fans being fans for ya. Although Half-Life fans are an insular bunch even by the standards, and have a pretty big case of the "don't change MY game!" thing going on primarily because of what happened the last time someone tried to enhance Half-Life 2.
