I'm new to modeling and I am still figuring out how to animate and apply textures, so really new I guess. I was wondering if blender would work for modeling stuff for games, as I would like to contribute something to this, being a really big half life fan.

Blender will work just fine, provided you export your work as the right file types.

It's very simple, there's an SMD exporter available that's really easy to use.
So, does that mean all the engine work has gone down the drain, or is he still allowing you to use it?
I don't know if this was posted here before, but maybe the team developing this mod could get in touch with this guy, who ported the HL2 train station to the UE3 engine, it looks fantastic:

while this is being made on the Alien Swarm branch of the Source Engine, which has significantly less in terms of default graphics capabilities and works completely differently from anything Unreal Engine-based. Not really, we already have trains from the leak (higher poly count) and textures by Corgi, all that needs is a mapper-pass to update the station layout slightly.

That's an interesting take but I think I'd be able to tell that all cans are filled with water.
