860m is marginally worse than a 660 so
That's interesting. Nvidia's charts suggest the 860m outperforms it at 1080 high.
Seriously, when black mesa had super high def textures I was blown away by the quality, yet ZERO mainstream games do this. WHY?
Higher quality textures doesn't necessarily mean a better looking game. A good artist can often improve the visual beauty and gameplay of a scene by removing detail! Consider Mirror's Edge - the entire art direction of that game relied on simplicity. It also means that the visuals can guide your eyes in gameplay, to assist with clarity. Here's a GTA example. Remember the HD road textures mod, which put super HD textures on the road? [T]http://cdn.overclock.net/1/1f/500x1000px-LL-1feda09c_GTAIV_2013_10_18_13_24_04_523.png[/T][T]http://i.ytimg.com/vi/3nsf0PuAey4/mqdefault.jpg[/T] Compare that to the vanilla textures: [T]http://www.gta-downloads.com/screenshots/archive2/11691_1.jpg[/T] Compare the contrast of the roads. In the modded "HD" one, the draw is heavily pulled away from the major gameplay elements (such as the cars and people), to the background decoration of the road, with highly bright yellow lines and high contrast, noisy roads. In a still picture, high saturation and high contrast can make it look temporarily better (similar to how high volume music seems to momentarily sound better). However, it reduces the overall clarity of the scene. In the vanilla version, observe that the cars, people, and obstacles have higher saturation that the surrounding background. This makes them stand out from the stationary background space, allowing the player to quickly assess the scene. The modded version ruins this balance. So because the road texture is meant to be simple and desaturated, adding more detail in the form of a higher resolution would either be wasteful - there's no point spending extra resolution on detail you won't add - or it'd be distracting and detrimental to gameplay.
I'm pretty pumped for tomorrow, I plan to just drive around Los Santos in first person for awhile before heading off and playing multiplayer, what about everyone else?
Looks pretty good
I don't even understand these videos, why would the PC gameplay be any different? Who would watch this and expect it to be real? You could record on PS4, and unless you look at the options menu, most people wouldn't notice the difference. [editline]a[/editline]
So because the road texture is meant to be simple and desaturated, adding more detail in the form of a higher resolution would either be wasteful - there's no point spending extra resolution on detail you won't add - or it'd be distracting and detrimental to gameplay.
This is also the same reason why Cinematic Mod for HL2 is so shitty - he uses 4k textures on random ceilings and floors, and leaves some physics props alone. Not only does this bloat up the filesize but it completely destroys the composition and focus of scenes. Quality distribution has a really noticeable effect on gameplay. I had 2GB on my game drive left. And I'm not too disappointed with my speed: [T]http://i.imgur.com/4jumEIN.jpg[/t] Edit; sorry for breaking your merge :(
-thanks for breaking automerge with your speedtest-
Just to confirm I had a look at some performance comparisons between the GTX 660 and GTX 860m for Max Payne 3, and they seem to be quite close, though yeah, 860m is a little step down. Either way I'm still looking forward to seeing how it stacks up in practice for GTA5. Handled DE:HR at 60 no matter what I threw at it, and didn't start slowing down with Bioshock Infinite until I was really starting to max it out.
I'm anxious to see this game come out, a system checker said I had the recommended specs to run this, but still this is the same computer that could barely run saints row 4 without suffering severe framerate drops.
how is my pc going to handle gtav? I dont really have a clue with system specs, I looked at the "can my pc run it" website and it said minimum which is just fine imo.
Processor AMD FX(tm)-4350 Quad-Core Processor Video Card AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series Memory 8.1 GB
going to pick up the game tomorrow on steam, hopefully buy it in the morning so I can download it through the day then play it at midnight
I have above the recommended in two aspects (RAM is 16GB instead of 8, and GPU is GTX860m instead of 660), so I'm legitimately really excited to see just how it performs.
HEEEY, I'm on a GTX860m as well. This laptop has seriously surprised me. Runs a bunch of games on all high at 1080p. Also really exited to see how it runs. Worst case I'll just use the desktop, the HD7850 should handle GTA decently. Edit: I mean the 860m handles BF4 on ultra at 40ish fps. Should at least run GTA 5 on medium amirite.
Been playing through MP3 while I'm waiting, found this wonderful bug: [vid]http://a.pomf.se/kewspi.webm[/vid]
I'm pretty pumped for tomorrow, I plan to just drive around Los Santos in first person for awhile before heading off and playing multiplayer, what about everyone else?
I played GTAV on 360 when it came out, but not very much of it before I ended up selling my 360. First person mode is the first thing I can't wait to try out for sure.
I pre-ordered it for the 360, I bought it after release on the One, and got a Steam version pre-order for my birthday in February.

I haven't pre-purchased yet, because I know jack-shit about computers. I bought mine prebuilt a few years ago, and the graphics card just says "AMD Radeon 7700 series", so I can't really tell how good it is. Here's the Canyourunit results, not sure if that's too trustworthy, but do you guys think I have a chance at running this? [t]http://i.imgur.com/KH0zCrv.png[/t]

So... Low/Medium = 360/PS3 High = XBO/PS4 Ultra? = PC eyecandy Or so I'm guessing? [editline]12th April 2015[/editline] I can't imagine low/medium being any more taxing than GTA4 to be honest. If both games can run on the launch 360, well...
PHASE TWO OF MY PLAN IS COMPLETE
I have a problem with you son.

They keep mentioning they built the PC version to be flexible, but I think the reality is they needed 30 FPS on Xbox 360 and PS3.
I have a problem with you son.
Where are The Elder Gods, Swebonny? Their pathetic Mortal Kombat shackles me no longer.

for those in facepunch2 you might as well set the og facepunch crew to active, although im head of the crew im going over to the original one now since theres only like 200 of us and the majority of them are completely gone
I'll probably play online more on the PC then I ever did on the consoles.
20 hours gentlemen
