I feel like having codecs in MGSV would both be really annoying for the player, and the developer. I'd hate to get interrupted randomly during free roam and setting up triggers for those kinds of codecs would be hard. I actually really like the cassette tape system. It isn't like Peace Walker where you have to look at a menu while listening, you can do it on the move! Plus the cassettes are overall way more informative and relevant than the Peace Walker ones. Unlike talking about Dinosaurs with Chico or some shit you actually learn about a lot more stuff that enhances the plot.
But at the same time, the tapes of The Phantom Pain are a lot more dull, a lot more based simply on being informative than actually being amusing. Codec conversations in MGS3 were both exposition and a load of characterization and I didn't mind it. Same with the tapes in Peace Walker. But I have 93 tapes I've not listened to in TPP because I've already heard some of them before on a brief PS4 play, and because they're so goddamn boring besides [sp]the Burgers of Kazuhira Miller.[/sp] [editline]29th September 2015[/editline] It's like people criticized Kojima for years about characters listing off pin-point accurate exposition about the most random of plot-relevant things on a dime, if they're not either talking about weird shit or being extremely dramatic, but then The Phantom Pain comes along and all the weird shit is filtered out for drama and 100% exposition, 100% of the time. Metal Gear Solid 4 already upset the delicate balance but at least you had a lot of memorable conversations (like the ration talk with Rosemary and Campbell, or Otacon's musings at [sp]Shadow Moses[/sp] on the most random shit that happened before), while Metal Gear Solid V just sort of tosses the balance out the window for lots and lots of exposition and dramatic trailer lines.
[sp]I find it hilarious how all of skullface's hundreds of infantry, armored vehicles, and helicopters do jack shit against not!Rex and all die in a single burst of gunfire, and then you singlehandedly kill it using those same tanks it massacred a minute before[/sp]
[sp]If only there was some kind of tank-like specially built megazord buster to replace the lame russian tanks in that fight, it would make a lot more sense.[/sp]
Check out Mr. Inspection Man and his S rank skills. :v:
What determines their rank is it heroism or purely game progress?
What determines their rank is it heroism or purely game progress?
Heroism, but it poops itself at 500000 and starts suddendly throwing more and more E,C,B instead of before 500000 you mostly see A++ and S only. [editline]29th September 2015[/editline] Or was it 50000
[sp]If only there was some kind of tank-like specially built megazord buster to replace the lame russian tanks in that fight, it would make a lot more sense.[/sp]
[Sp]Battle Gear woulda been cool but it also woulda made the mission too easy (it's easy enough to do it on foot in Extreme as it is). Really ST-84 just needed to be harder, but not in a bullet sponge or "you can't damage me right now" way.[/sp] [editline]29th September 2015[/editline] But besides that, the series has repeatedly shown that Metal Gears on their own are pretty useless. ST-84 is just a bad Metal Gear in general. [editline]29th September 2015[/editline] We shoulda had a Zeke vs ST-84 fight that would have been awesome
MGS3 had the best CODEC calls, there was a conversation for everything. And a lot of funny, non-exposition calls [editline]29th September 2015[/editline] I'd spend ages swapping between weapons calling SIGINT. "Got yourself an AK huh"
the codec calls in MGS3 were seriously the best it was one of the biggest things I missed in MGS4 i mean the codec was still there but there were like half a dozen actually interesting non-plot conversations on it
I feel like having codecs in MGSV would both be really annoying for the player, and the developer. i wish fob trading/diplomacy was a thing. I'd rather propose a guard return for some extra resources than spend 10 minutes waiting for them to be visible to snipe on fob defense
How do I destroy radar dishes?
I hope when the MGO update comes that the ability to trade soldiers like in Peace Walker is added. That was a nice feature.
I hope when the MGO update comes that the ability to trade soldiers like in Peace Walker is added. That was a nice feature.
Did it let you trade resources? [editline]29th September 2015[/editline] I'd gladly give up some of these A-A++ guys for just about any resource
resources werent in pw but you could send items like rations
I just got S while using [sp]Raiden[/sp], this game some times doesn't follow own rules.
[sp]I got a butterfly codename after finishing mission 45, can confirm the game forgets rules sometimes.[/sp]
This happens to me all the time. I'm always getting codenames related to weapons or items I didn't bring with me, let alone use.
MGS3 had the best CODEC calls, there was a conversation for everything. And a lot of funny, non-exposition calls
Don't forget the amazing MGS V codec conversations such as "There sheep around", "There goats around" and "You gotta extract him?"
Explosives or extremely powerful guns like the Brennan
But I don't want to alarm anyone. I'm trying to be super sneaky. Tbh. I also don't get how people still get point and heroism at all when fighting soldiers with guns all the time.
Don't forget the amazing MGS V codec conversations such as "There sheep around", "There goats around" and "You gotta extract him?"
its main gun can cut a man... in half.......

I also don't get how people still get point and heroism at all when fighting soldiers with guns all the time.
On the bright side if you do blow something up it isn't an automatic alert, they will hear it & go into caution mode but it doesn't count as an alert. Or you could try capturing the outpost first so there's no one around to hear the explosion. Also about you last point, the way ranks work in this game means that it'll only count if you kill, get an alert, restart or use reflex, each of these will lose you bonus points but it doesn't count the amount of times these happen. As far as the game's concerned killing 1 guy & kills 100 guys is the same thing So you could go full nuclear & still get an S rank if you complete the mission fast enough
Would MGSV be a better game if they didn't go full open world? Maybe if they had settled on a happy medium between this and the linear older games where there were a whole bunch of Camp Omega-sized open-ended maps that were accessed via a hub, with a big story mission and a bevy of side-ops for each, the gameplay and story would feel tighter. Trade a large amount of underutilized space for a small amount of fully utilized space.
The fulton Ballista on d-walker makes almost every side ops mission trivially easy.
This happens to me all the time. I'm always getting codenames related to weapons or items I didn't bring with me, let alone use.
A reminder that ranks are based on the performance of the last 3 missions.

I also don't get how people still get point and heroism at all when fighting soldiers with guns all the time.
The only way to "silently" destroy the radar dish is when no one is around. As in outpost captured. You can try to glitch a grenade or rocketlauncher with a silencer, but once you destroy it and someone is near that thing, they instantly call it to HQ and go into alert.
