Going to meet my melee and P:M local scene this friday.
I am doomed to play with people like these. They don't even take the time to learn the mechanics of the game and then blame it for being way too confusing for them. Even younger kids knows how to play better than them.
I find that the most-worthwhile opponents tend to be people who have invested time in the fighting game genre. While Smash is in a class of its own within that genre, essential skills from other fighting games still carry over. In particular, the heavy importance on avoiding damage being just as valuable as dealing damage. In the case of Smash, since combos aren't complete stunlocks, it requires that players read one another's actions and out-predict their opponent. Once that specific bit of strategy is ingrained into their subconscious, I've noticed that my opponent will be more tactical with their approach and make better use of defensive tools available to them. If you take someone to an arcade-style fighting game and they mash the buttons instead of taking a step back to find out which buttons to use at what times, they'll have a similar reckless abandon in Smash. It's still in that genre, being more-accessible doesn't mean it gets a free pass on those mental skillsets. There's a lot more tech in other fighting games, so at least introducing these players to Smash tech can ease the pain -- especially since Smash tech primarily relies on the shield button or the control stick, easy to understand but tougher to master timing for.
So, are there any other serious Jigglypuff users on here besides myself? I wouldn't mind having a few tips on how to mix up my playstyle.
hello! Just remember to be short hopping a lot, towards and then away from your opponent. If you land a hit, short hop forward air them repeatedly until they are off the edge. When you first go on the offensive, make sure you back off as soon as you forward air, since if they block it they can shield grab you. If they get hit, continue moving forward and air attacking. This is commonly know as a "wall of pain" Neutral air is great right out of shield or spot dodge, last a long time with good hitbox. Down Air lasts a long time, good for surprising them when you are above them. Back air is stronger but obviously you need to have some good spacing.
We play with this one kid who hides on the corner of the map the entire game, waits until everyone kills each other, uses nothing but ranged attacks and spams dodge constantly if you get near him. Playing with him isn't fun

I tend to play characters with attacks that minimize the ability to merely dodge it and maximize the chance of hitting them, or pressuring them into letting me approach, attack or grab them. WFT's Sun Salutation, Lucina's Shield Breaker or Dancing Blade, Lucario's Aura Sphere or Force Palm, Kirby's Final Cutter, Greninja's Water Shuriken, Ganondorf's Wizard's Foot and Neutral punch, Samus' Charge Beam and Missiles, Marth's Shield Breaker and Dancing Blade, Robin's Thunder and Arcfire, Luigi's Fireballs, Tornado and Rocket, and MR G&W's Chef. They are fucked no matter what they do. They shield, they set themselves up for a grab, let me approach, or even allow me to attack them.
Is there something special you can do to deal with these people? I encounter them a lot in for glory.
Read their rolls and dodges, and punish accordingly.
What sucks is that sometimes the character you're playing just isn't well equipped to do that, and your opponent's is nimble enough to just start running and jumping away if dodging stops working. Ganondorf versus Toon Link is a matchup notorious for this. The moment they see you predict a roll with a smash, they just airdodge jump over/through you, and if that stops working, they start flat-out running everywhere and being generally difficult to engage the rest of the match.
I really need to play Smash some more, because every friend I play just wrecks me on 3DS and Wii U. I can't even consistently fight Level 9 CPUs. And any of the 'advanced techniques' are either way over my head or I don't yet have the reflexes for them.

For Glory, With Friends, or both? You definitely are improving though, your Donkey Kong is bananas.
I played a lot of Peach today, I had no idea that she would be so much fun to use. Now I really want to get better with her.
I am so proud of those Donkey Kong plays. I love seeing Donkey Kong wreck face more than anything.
Small Webm dump, sorry. I think i'm improving.
i want to try and fight some more DK players, shits fun. You should add me so we can DANCE postal101 (assuming we can connect)
For Glory, With Friends, or both? You definitely are improving though, your Donkey Kong is bananas.
A mix of FG and friends. Still hoping to find a tournament in my local area so I can see how my DK stands against other high tier players.
i want to try and fight some more DK players, shits fun. IMO Meta Knight has the strongest gimp game of any character Though most players aren't skilled or ballsy enough to consistently utilize that strength, so they label him bad and move on
I played a lot of Peach today, I had no idea that she would be so much fun to use. Now I really want to get better with her.
I dunno why, but I can wreck shit with Peach pretty consistently on For Glory. Guess no one expects her, but her airgame and Toad Counters are just too good.
So, what would you guys say the chances are that Mewtwo will also be made available as a Club Nintendo Reward to be bought with stars/coins before they can it? I'm mostly asking this since they added the Mario Kart 8 DLC to the EU Rewards even though that's not even that old.
Woop my Smash Soundtrack just arrived! And I broke one of the hinges off while removing the plastic wrap :v:

Observe what your favorite fighters do when played by others, see the success rates for their tricks and try the most reliable moves out later. I know I learned to use a meteor kick to stomp any attempting to juggle me, following up with a lunge at them with a powerful fist. Try to figure out your favorite fighter's quickest moves, as those help at keeping your opponent from hitting you before you hit them. Use laggy, but powerful moves with precision, because they will be punished if you miss. Also figure out what moves send opponents flying best, your kill moves. The most effective kinds can usually erase a stock at 100%. Try bopping your C-stick very briefly and repeatedly to be ready to attack out of dash at a moment's notice. Some characters have excellent 'panic attacks' as I call them, where you can do something to reliably get out of a situation. Say, Marth's Counter and Dolphin Slash.

While general knowledge of smash mechanics is applicable to all characters, some characters have movesets with quirks that go against the grain. For example, Ganondorf having a tilt that's slower than any of his smashes.
I don't quite have a distinct main yet, my best two so far are Mario and Sonic ironically enough. I gotta work on getting a real set of mains.
I don't quite have a distinct main yet, my best two so far are Mario and Sonic ironically enough. I gotta work on getting a real set of mains.
A good way of finding mains is by going random and seeing who you like the most. that's how I found all of my mains.
I've gone from pikachu spamming thunder and jumping around to avoid inevitable death in every smash game to maining Zelda being able to hold my own against my friends. It only took a couple months of playing at their place. Just watch a lot! Learn every mechanic even if you can't pull it off yet. Know all your moves for the character you're playing. I found my favorite characters by trying some and asking my friends who is similar. I started off with Little Mac tbh. I was so bad before that when I learned rolling I was amazed. And before I never used shield...
Jeeze Nintendo you're late. I got the E-mail telling me the soundtrack was shipped AFTER it had already arrived.
I made a post for the thing. http://smashboards.com/threads/openmelee2d-aka-super-smash-land-in-ue4.396410/
my friends like to force quit matches whenever i win. like i managed to the kill where they are in the background and they quit right there to make it a no contest. it's frustrating that i can't even enjoy my victory screen...
