Who even is Shantae
Half-genie girl that lives in a lighthouse, is the guardian of Scuttle Town (her hometown), having to defend it against Risky Boots (a pirate) and crazy monsters, is adopted by an uncle named Mimic (relic hunter), and is friends with Bolo (some dude who gives hints and presumably has a crush on her), Sky (war bird trainer), and Rottytops (zombie). Oh yeah, and she can transform into a monkey, elephant, or a mermaid by doing bellydances. VOTE FOR SHANTAE TODAY
quick, what are some big-ish nintendo franchises (ie not one-off games, sorry Takabanana and Prince Shortbread) that don't have any characters yet? i want to throw some votes their way. i can think of a few; Advance Wars, Sin & Punishment, Golden Sun, Rhythm Heaven, Custom Robo. i'd probably want to see either an AW or RH character from those lists the most; RH is fucking great, and AW is due for a comeback (plus it could easily take bits from Snake's moveset, it's not a stretch to say the COs would know how to use different types of weapons and could call in artillery for other attacks etc)
quick, what are some big-ish nintendo franchises (ie not one-off games, sorry Takabanana and Prince Shortbread) that don't have any characters yet?
Cooking Mama and Professor Layton are the only other ones I can think of.
Oh god, Professor Layton. "This smash ball reminds me of a certain puzzle, Luke." I need that. Although I can't see how it could happen since he's such a gentleman?
Oh god, Professor Layton. "This smash ball reminds me of a certain puzzle, Luke." I need that. I personally still think WR should get in, he perfectly represents the new Wii U generation, showing Nintendo's new partnership with Platinum. Also he'd be a stupid easy character to make moves for because of all the unite morphs.
Oh god, Professor Layton. "This smash ball reminds me of a certain puzzle, Luke." I need that. Although I can't see how it could happen since he's such a gentleman?
So was Jonathan Joestar.
Well Phoenix Wright is in Marvel vs. Capcom, I'm sure there is a way to fit Professor Layton in. :v:
Sakurai could just about make any character happen, so it definitely could be done. While the whole game is a spin-off and features characters as trophies coming to life, It'd seem wrong to see Layton go against his stance on behavior and fighting. This is smash however, so again it wouldn't be a big deal. What I really want to see is what was mentioned earlier, Advance Wars representation. A pokemon trainer style Andy/Max/Sami trio would be amazing. Edit: Jonathan Joestar had to deal with a man that 1-up'd him and just about wrecked his whole life. A gentleman sure, but we've seen Layton in 4+ games now and the most violent thing I can recall him doing was taking a sword and fighting back.
Layton has been involved in sword fights before, so that would work. One of his taunts should be "The one who will lose.. Is you!"
I can already see Professor Layton looking out from under the brim of his hat with that little smile and people thinking of him like they did the Villager after his intro.
The playable character from Shantae
featuring shantae, from the shantae series
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrUZLZnh1cM here's a sweet video of Professor Layton getting his fencing on in case you were wondering what it looked like. Only watch the first half or so to avoid some potentially major spoilers though.

(although relatively unknown in the west, Legendary Starfy is actually a series with 5 games, Glory of Heracles has 6 games and Famicom Detective Club has three games plus a remake) Of the multiple-game series not in Smash though, Nintendo Wars is by far the most deserving of a rep based on sales and character iconicness, in fact, it has outsold Kid Icarus as a series with just the GBA and DS titles. (that's not even including the other titles, as Nintendo Wars is a twelve-game series spanning 8 systems that started in 1988) I'm not sure why the series is currently on the longest hiatus it ever has had though, considering the last game, Days of Ruin, didn't do that badly.
Kid Icarus was chosen as a franchise to include in Smash because it represented the NES era, much like the Ice Climbers did, and because it's one of Sakurai's personal favorites from the NES. It's why he chose to make a new game in the series as well.
Kid Icarus was chosen to represent because it represented the NES era, and because it's one of Sakurai's personal favorites from the NES. It still deserved a rep far more than Kid Icarus ever deserved to get a second, let alone a third.
Also it's worth noting, as a developer he does let his bias show a little, what with buffing Samus, double-repping FE:Awakening and referencing Jojo everywhere. A game or series is more likely to get proper representation if it's one he likes too, because then he'll have more ideas on how to go about it, and will be more comfortable with taking liberties to make it work. He's also partial to taking a character with basically nothing in the way of combat (Captain Falcon being a prime example), and building something totally new from the ground up around them. Characters who fall into this category may actually have just as good a chance - if not slightly higher - of being chosen, purely because of how interesting they can become. ROB, Villager, Wii Fit Trainer, Duck Hunt, there are plenty of examples already, and they're all unique and fun. Hell, even my favorite - Fox - had extremely little to go on, being a pilot like Captain Falcon and not at all specialized in hand to hand, but he turned out great.
i think cooking mama would be a fantastic "joke" character (in the same vein as wii fit trainer; not really a joke, but funny when juxtaposed in a fighting game)
Also it's worth noting, as a developer he does let his bias show a little
-Series uses the platforming behavior of the Kirby series -Shields are designed to look like those used when Mirror Kirby shields -main final boss is the menu cursor from Kirby's Dream Land (this has actually been proven based on filenames) -Kirby characters are the main protagonists of the Subspace Emissary (with the Halberd having a prominent role), to the point where they constantly commit deus ex machinas -vast majority of Kirby references (including literally all Kirby Smash stages) are from Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby's Adventure, Kirby's Super Star and Kirby's Air Ride, the only Kirby games he has directed, while the rest of the series barely get anything beyond a remix here and there apiece -Shoehorns Kid Icarus Uprising content everywhere in the Smash games following his work on Kid Icarus Uprising, while simultaneously putting no new references to the original Kid Icarus (which has still outsold KI:U) and absolutely none for Kid Icarus: Of Myths & Monsters -Made Meta-Knight be the only character in Brawl with a different fanfare from the rest of their series -Gave Dark Pit his own victory fanfare before any Zelda or Pokemon characters got their own -Kirby is the only one of the original 12 besides Fox to get a new set of voice lines in each new Smash series while Jigglypuff is still using sounds from SSB64 and Ganondorf is still using samples straight from Twilight Princess -Gave Kirby, King DeDeDe and Pit new final smashes, but not Falco, Toon Link or Sheik a little Edit: Sorry, but in my opinion, he is one of the most biased developers out there in such a high position. While I appreciate the amount of effort he puts into his games, I don't think that he should have the level of control over such a high-profile game series that he does and feel that the series is in a stranglehold because of it. This is the same guy that was allowed to "balance" the Smash games, is one of the main reasons so many characters don't resemble their game-series counterparts, allowed tripping, made the game overly defensive, thought stage bosses that completely take over the level were a good idea and made smash tour and the SSE over normal adventure modes.
-Gave Kirby, King DeDeDe and Pit new final smashes, but not Falco, Toon Link or Sheik
They were replaced because the old ones were kind of shit (and Kirby's caused a huge controversy in parts of Europe, compared to a disturbing form of medieval execution)
They were replaced because the old ones were kind of shit (and Kirby's caused a huge controversy in parts of Europe, compared to grotesque and disturbing medieval execution)
That didn't stop them from bringing back Peach's. Also, can I have a source on that bit about Kirby and Europe? Nothing is coming up and nothing of the sort occured with the Kirby games that had it (including the remake, Kirby Super Star Ultra, which came out after Brawl)
-Kirby is the only one of the original 12 besides Fox to get a new set of voice lines in each new Smash series while Jigglypuff is still using sounds from SSB64 and Ganondorf is still using samples straight from Twilight Princess
Because Kirby needs new copy ability voices in every game and it'd sound wrong if they didn't re-record the other ones to go with it. Ness has consistently gotten a new voice too.

It'd sound off if you used different voice clips from different recording sessions in different years, she doesn't sound the same between any two of them.

I'd love to see him again. also I'm not sure I can agree with you on the nintendo wars' characters being iconic, as I personally could not name a single one and off the top of my head can only imagine one kid in an orange jumpsuit carrying a wrench from some promotional art.
And that voice actor has aged. It'd sound off if you used different voice clips from different recording sessions in different years, she doesn't sound the same between any two of them.
I don't realistically think that the majority of people would be able to tell when most can't that Yoshi has a combination of old and new sounds recorded in different years under similar circumstances, but my point wasn't so much that Kirby shouldn't get new voice lines, it's that others should.
The character that comes in first is going to be the most random character that somehow got a billion votes that we never heard of.
like I'm sure they're iconic for those who played the games, but my grandma could name DK, Mario, Pikachu, Pac-Man, and the Wii Fit Trainer with no difficulty. [editline]3rd April 2015[/editline] my automerge!
If the guy who made DBZ tweets #VoteforGoku we're all screwed
