The joke is that 4kids permanently entrenched a Mexican accent into everyone's perception of Meta Knight
Spanish, not Mexican, although Mexi Knight would be pretty damn funny
He's just... not a good representative of his game at all. He's a highly offensive character who controls the flow of matches with his incredible power-as contrasted to Punch-Out where he's 100% reactionary and defensive and only able to pile the damage on by being faster and smarter than his opponent and hitting them a lot. He looks fucking angry all the time, which is nothing like he's always been characterized, he looks goofy more often than determined in Punch-Out, but they didn't even get the determination part right. *snips the rest*
Smash Bros rarely even cares about canon abilities though, unfortunately, which is a real shame though because it'd be really cool (and probably for the better) if it did. Aside from Little Mac, Wario and Ganondorf being obviously unlike how they behave in their games, Bowser has it bad, too. In the Mario games, he is a projectile-user who is fast, can jump high, can talk fluently (though how the game interprets talking varies from game-to-game) and is weakest at close combat. In Smash, he is a brawler who is slow, jumps poorly, makes random monster sounds and is strongest at close combat.
Not gonna lie, when I first got brawl and played Meta Knight I was really confused as to why he didn't have the accent from Right Back at Ya :v:

Dorf and the others I can give you though. Also yeah Sakurai has this strange thing with Bowser and Dedede, like I feel Bowser would be his retarded melee/brawl hunched over self if Sakurai could fully have his way with him. "I can't picture him speaking so he should make monster noises". Like he doesn't realize he doesn't have a say in what Bowser can and can't do outside the Smash games or something and is actively ignoring every modern Bowser showing because "I don't wanna", and as I said before it's only more bizarre with the fact Jr says YOWIE and other things that are perfectly understandable. There's just no excuse, same with Giga Bowser which is just fanfiction tier. Like he couldn't even give Giga Bowser the new moveset, he's just a giant lumbering turd and acts as a punishment for getting the smashball instead of a power up. For Bowser not knowing melee though will go against that, the RPG's showed that he's more then okay at punching shit in the face really really hard and customs do give him projectile fireballs and stuff. Worst off his Dedede actually when it comes to the voice thing. Sakurai said he can't see Dedede talking either (despite meta knight being able to?) so he has these weird demon voices that I got used to. Thing is Sakurai himself voiced Dedede in Brawl! What the hell changed man
Wario's perfectly in line with his Ware characterization.
Not even in the WarioWare games does Wario just go around biting people, farting and by making unnatural motions for combat and movement.
For Bowser not knowing melee though will go against that, the RPG's showed that he's more then okay at punching shit in the face really really hard and customs do give him projectile fireballs and stuff.
Weakest at melee combat =/= not knowing melee combat. Mario's main method of defeating Bowser usually is to beat the crap out of him or dodge him directly by working his way around the projectiles Bowser throws.
Bowser Jr has his goofy NSMB voice, why can't they give Bowser his? Why's he have to sound like a generic monster again? [editline]t[/editline] I had this nitpick with Brawl as well, that the kaiju noises weren't fitting anymore back then either, and now it especially makes no sense.
I see that Lythero is using his edithing skills very well. And sry, i dont know how to put a video in facepunch ._.

As much as the horrible demon voice is off-putting for Dedede, what kind of voice would actually be good for him? Duck quacks? Another George Bush impression?
It was really weird to hear donkey kong make actual gorilla noises instead of his silly voice.
Grant Kirkhope has offered numerous times to do the DK voice from 64, and it was considered every time, but ultimately declined.
I also think bowser is weird, he sounds like Godzilla even though he had a distinct voice in the games.
I also think bowser is weird, he sounds like Godzilla even though he had a distinct voice in the games.
And again, it makes absolutely no sense next to his kid and his high-ranking officers, who all have their NSMB voices.

I imagine him more as someone that would mostly do grunts in battle, like Link, rather than talking or making animal noises.
Fighting games seem to live and die based on the quality of the characters, so it's important that they focus on the "cool" parts of the character instead of making them act silly even if that's how they usually would elsewhere. You kinda have to ham up characters to make them fit better in the context of smash. Link and Ike are very different in attitude to how mario usually acts so it makes sense to make him just as determined so he doesn't stick out. Some characters are obvious exceptions though. Like if bowser had his regular voice he wouldn't be imposing, and as a character who's role in smash is to be a bruiser and tower over smaller characters, it makes sense for him to make sounds that are a little more feirce.
Yeah but tell me it isn't strange when Samus gets star KO'd and you hear robotic beeps and drones
sakurai is the guy who respects character canon enough to give dark pit a different final smash but not to do anything similar for the 7 koopalings (that is, a single FS for all 7), alph, any other costumes or clones, or for entire characters whose movesets make no sense. sakurai is the guy who argues that adding a new sword character for fire emblem would add nothing, then adds one anyways, then wonders why a clone that took mere hours to make is unpopular when they are barely different (since they made them in a few hours) can you really try to understand the thought processes of someone who thought smash tour was a good idea?
Yeah but tell me it isn't strange when Samus gets star KO'd and you hear robotic beeps and drones
Look at her about to fall off the ledge animation or her stunned animation. I think Sakurai genuinely believes she's a robot.
As much as the horrible demon voice is off-putting for Dedede, what kind of voice would actually be good for him? Duck quacks? Another George Bush impression?
texan dedede from the kirby show will always be canon to me
I wonder what he thinks Wario is then
unfortunately it seems to be "funny farting guy haha xD"

Lucina, a character from a 2013 game, uses health bar graphics from an early 90s SNES game because they couldn't be bothered to substitute it for an Awakening style cut-in or even a health bar from that game. Alph uses Olimar's ship, even though he has his own ship in Pikmin 3 (and isn't this the exact reason Dark Pit is even a different character? I'm not against that, but I wish he'd be consistent about it.) But Sakurai is also the guy who looked at a series of primitive handheld games and combined them into a character who both plays uniquely and pays homage to a different game with like every single animation in Mr. Game and Watch. And the guy who looked at Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley and Wild Gunman and realised that elements of all 3 games could work if integrated into the face of the Zapper, the Dog, with a really unique mechanic based directly on the gameplay of that trio. For every wasted potential or blatant contradiction, there's a genius idea and a fantastic implementation of a mechanic or concept from another game. He's a really creative person and I admire that a lot, but it feels like maybe he shouldn't play a lone hand in designing a game like Smash Bros. You can't expect one man to know everything about Nintendo to the extent required to pay homage to every game effectively. It seems like for some characters he just doesn't know enough about them to really do anything interesting with them, so maybe it should fall to someone else to design that character. Maybe someone else should be involved who knows more about competitive fighting game balance. I'm not denying Sakurai's brilliance in even designing the concept of Super Smash Bros, let alone all the interesting movesets and characters, but he can't be expected to do it all alone without a lot of people being disappointed.
Speaking of which if you ever look at Mario in Smash he always looks fucking pissed no matter what he's doing
Speaking of which if you ever look at Mario in Smash he always looks fucking pissed no matter what he's doing
this bothers the hell out of me. i miss the happy smash 64 mario with the mario 64 sound effects. mario with an angry face just reminds me of those dumb flash animations from like 2007 newgrounds back when it was hilarious to make mario violent/badass and do drugs and shoot people and stuff like that. when people try to make mario badass it makes me cringe, i just don't think it works. one of my favourite things about mario games is that mario is such a happy character and always looks/sounds like he's having the time of his life.
