I never got how people can seriously think Nintendo is going out of business. At this point, with how much money they have, Nintendo would pretty much have to actively try to go bankrupt.

they think that specs = everything
"if you don't have good specs you're going to lose sales"
but the fact is, the other consoles can barely do anything with their "Superior specs" until devs get proper optimization kits.
nintendo uses what works well. This is why the wii u gamepad is so durable. It's why the pro u controller is so well refined. The first gameboy was far weaker than the gamegear and yet it dominated.
Is there any reason at all that people want Roy back besides Melee nostalgia?
It seems to be agreed upon by a lot of people that he wasn't even good in Melee and wasn't good in his original game, either. There seems to be no legitimate reason to bring him back, he has no relevance outside of vague memories of, "Who even is this guy? His sword is on fire!" from when we were ten.

I think it's more of the principle of the character rather than the character itself.
From melee, we will have access to Dr. Mario and Mewtwo. That leaves only Pichu and Roy. Pichu was downright terrible and Roy was just plain underwhelming. I can understand if someone wants Roy's stronger hilt mechanics to come back as a contrast to Marth's tipper mechanics, but that's a poor idea to shoehorn onto an existing fighter like Ike, so having it on a standalone character is the next best thing. But it makes you ask yourself, is a hilt mechanic really worth creating a whole new character for? My answer to that question is a resounding "no," but I'd like to hear more personal takes on that.
Now Ice Climbers, that's another monster to wrestle with. Due to hardware constraints they were withheld from the game roster. Their mechanics at high levels typically resulted in chain-grabbing and slightly offsetting their timing so that the other can pummel on the grabbed target. With Smash 4 removing chain grabbing, I can't see their moveset itself being too great. If anything, due to hardware limitations, I'd like to see them come back as a singular entity that merely appears to be a pair. With their framedata modified to make it appear as if they are two separate bodies working in tandem. Similar to Duck Hunt in presentation but with a moveset centered around multi-hit attacks, potentially with room to cancel the move in between the two distinct hits so that Nana strikes with a different move. Allowing for branching combo setups similar to Marth's dancing blade.

Aight, I don't have high hopes but it might be playable for some fun matches
I have dolphin version 4.0-5616 so you'll need that, because direct connect fuckery and the gamecube adapter
Call it that if you want, because I shouldn't need to know how to press a series buttons within a span of few seconds, over predicting the opponent better, in a game like Smash. I should need to pick a character, start a match, whale on an opponent, watch out for his attacks and KO him. Not make use of what is insistently called "tactics" to catch an opponent off guard and get a practically guaranteed KO thanks to the near inescapable hitstun that massively favors comobs of swift and aerially strong characters a.k.a the current meta. High pace can be good, but not for Smash. Not without legitimate implementation, like quick stepping is in some fighting games.
Speedrunning is fundamentally different in the way that usually only one player plays against what the game throws at him, often using the most efficient, even if sometimes glitchy tricks possible, to gain the most optimal result. In multiplayer, these "techniques" are giving yourself a near-insurmountable edge over another if they are not knowledgeable themselves. I like more even matches than what Melee can offer.
Comically, all it took to shatter the precious Melee meta in the future installments was removal of directional dodging, lessening hitstun, buffing and nerfing characters and increase in characters, among others. Well, Project M lets the fans of the game make themselves an unofficial sequel if they think they know what Smash should be like.
Melee is allowed to be competitive, Like PM. Smash as series should not be. That's the point I'm making.

i agree that it's bad that some of the advanced tech's are unintuitive and create an entry barrier, and if you're not interested in putting in the time to learn them just to be able to compete that's totally fine, but if you don't play the game and haven't actually properly given it a chance, i don't think you should dismiss it so heavily just because you don't like the idea of learning advanced tech. the melee metagame is a lot more diverse than you seem to think it is, and the advanced tech's add a great deal of depth to every little interaction and create a lot of options/outcomes and things to consider. there's way more going in a game of melee VS. a game of sm4sh. which is a good thing or a bad thing depending on what you enjoy in a multiplayer gaming experience.
nobody's forcing you to play competitive melee. if you don't want to put a lot of work into learning AT's then don't. competitive sm4sh is pretty popular right now, enjoy it. until you can tell me the pro's and con's of these AT's you hate so much and demonstrate a good understanding of how they affect the metagame, don't dismiss their existence entirely just because they're not immediately easy to do.
Not Sm4sh, far as i've heard. Would love to see it get popular, though. It has interesting looking combat, without risking accessibility.

Use the full extended link, and then take the S out of HTTPS
If you can't see the difference between those Smash 4 matches and Melee matches then you're watching the wrong matches or just don't know enough about smash to be commenting on the state of competitive play

Nintendo is so disciplined with their profits that they put ~90% of what they earned from the Wii and DS into an emergency savings pool, which could in theory allow them to operate totally profitless for almost 50 years.
People are used to companies being tremendously wasteful with what they earn, so hearing about the exact opposite is shocking. They just don't want to believe it, some of them.

Nintendo is over 100 years old. People need to realize if they've been around that long, they know how to run a business. They know how better than the gaggle of know-it-alls who like to call themselves games journalists these days (Looking at you, Polygon. Nintendo will certainly outlast you.)

I didn't mention Ice Climbers or the other characters because wanting them to be back is actually understandable. I specifically wanted to know about Roy because he would bring absolutely nothing good to the roster and he character is completely non-noteworthy.
Meanwhile there are characters of actual interest or relevance from Fire Emblem that wouldn't play anything like Marth. I seriously believe that wanting Roy to be back in the game is incredibly foolish. Even if for some bizarre reason you wanted the anti-tipper shoehorned onto a character, that could just be slapped onto Lucina, the unnecessary Marth clone that we already have.
So the Smash CD shows up completed in my To-Do History on Club Nintendo, yet for Order Inquiries it says I have no reward orders.
Should I be concerned?
Lucina was supposed to be an alternate skin to begin with. She uses Marth's fighting style and sword.
Roy, well... The Smash fighting style was different even with a cloned moveset. But as an alternate skin makes no sense (a Roy costume for Marth is neat tho, specially if it wasn't just the armor and actually had red hair), and as a character... No thanks, we already have good enough Fire Emblem representatives.
No feeling quite like Two-Stocking a Fox in literally fifteen seconds as Dedede on For Glory.
Rushed through the laser spam, Forward Grab, Up-Tilt Gordo, dodge his ledge recovery, F-Smash for a ten-second KO.
Then he just ragequit, it was cash.

It's still funny to see all this talk over Roy, despite the fact he is objectively the worst lord in series history.
Smash is where a majority of his popularity came from, and he wasn't even particularly noteworthy there either.
[editline]24th February 2015[/editline]
In fact, I'd argue our fine friend Katie's work is where a good chunk of his online fanbase came from. That in itself is a pretty humorous thought.
Ike is a better character anyway so whatevs

I mainly want him back because he's my Project M main and he's really different to Marth in playstyle. His stats in Binding Blade aren't really relevant, I like him as a character in that game. It's also just that he's already been playable in Smash and we've seen his unique playstyle. I like that playstyle, it works well for me. I'd like to be able to use him in Smash 4.
yeah but no matter what you say
roy is our boy
I just realized something unfortunate:
You can no longer enable customization, select a custom moveset, then disable customization in order to disable custom equipment but leave custom moves in-tact.
Why is equipment even a thing? There's no balance surrounding it, it just seems like something they threw together when they realized that the malleable stats introduced in smash run and tour would transition easily into general changes to characters due to coding the smash engine to be dynamic with character physics. The equipment themselves are nothing more than padding out the length it'll take to grind for custom moves. Which is ridiculous to say the least, grinding shouldn't be the only appeal to the single-player modes, that's poor execution on making single-player appealing. Other than making house-rule builds with equipment (ie high gravity + smooth lander) or for making a specific build to make classic mode easier, no one I know even gives two shits about custom equipment, it's all about the moves -- moves that happen to be gated behind an arbitrary wall.
I wish custom moves were allowed 100% of the time regardless of setting too
as for equipment, it's just fin as shit to make ridiculous stat builds. right now I've got 3 ganon builds, one to max out each stat. I call em Truckdorf, Tankdorf, and Traindorf respectively. it's just fun to fuck around with em from time to time

The list is inaccurate; however, when it comes to hard copies (excluding digital copies [i.e. Minecraft's majority] or multiple distinct iterations as the same game [i.e. Tetris, most iterations would probably be better stated as pseudosequals due to different mechanics between them]), Nintendo does indeed dominate by a significant margin. VGchartz has an odd way of representing hard copies sold, but it effectively indicates that the top 15 best-selling games are all Nintendo if you count multiplats as separate sales and 24 of the top 30 using the same logic. (It wouldn't quite be a 15-out-of-15 if you combine multiplat sales together, but would still be well over 50% of the top 30 when calculated that way)

No kidding! I've got four custom ganons too! Ganicdorf, Ganondwarf, Ganondork, and Gairdorf! I even made advance versions for all of them too.
Ganondorf is my favorite character to customize.
