The closest you can get is turning the HUD elements off completely, by typing "UI.DrawEnable 0" in console.

Fuck dudes. All my stats got reset. Loadout and unlocks are fine, but everything else is fucked. Not cool.

You can change the transparency of HUD elements in the options.
And one shot from sniper rigle through the glass wil break it 100%

I don't think the fact that it blocks that much damage is too outlandish considering a few things. One is the sheer volume of explosives typically involved in a match of BF4. Another would be the fact that it's only gonna work if the damage is coming from dead on. Lastly, the person holding the shield cannot deal any damage and it's gonna be up to a teammate (unlikely unless it's actually a friend you're communicating with) to take care of the threat, and that teammate will likely not be totally shielded from damage.
Could be that it blocks splash damage and not impact damage though.
I agree. While in many other games the riot shield was designed to withstand explosives at the expense of limited movement (and in this case, not being able to use your weapon) I just find it funny that DICE have repeatedly said they've been going for 'realism' and yet they're allowing someone to withstand massive explosions and rockets to the face without knocking the shield away or destroying it in the process.
Still, it'd be pretty easy to kill the shield bearer by shooting through the glass or using the XM25 to aim at the shield and shoot above it.
On an off topic, I wonder if you could attach C4 to your team-mates shield and use the shield bearer as a kamikaze bomber? :v:

3+ C4 and anti tank mines. At once. A riot shield blocking that much splash damage isn't balanced any which way you try to look at it bud

Re installed to give it a try before the new DLC just to find out they still haven't fixed shit like the burst fire rate issue (which makes burst fire guns 100% useless) and the new weapons are still unbalanced as all fuck. At this point i've given up hope for this game, they seem too focused on releasing new content rather than making sure the old content is actually any fucking good

The burst fire thing is kind of unfixable. If there no sampling limit, people would just mod their input to fire as fast as possible. Heck, people are doing right now, they just can't fire as fast as they could otherwise.
Call of Duty 4, for instance, didn't have a sampling limit (or a very high one anyhow). You could practically fire pistols fully-auto:
