Damnit, fuck Manus. Fuck his inconsistent magic spam.
He's really not all that tough to deal with. All of his melee moves can be blocked if you have the endurance, and if you're not a dumbass about it he always gives you the chance to recharge or heal. Just wait for his overhead smash move, roll, and you get two free heavy hits.
But then he starts using his magic attack, thank fuck for the silver pendant. The one that acts like the Hellzone Grenade and surrounds you is easy to beat and gives you enough time to react. Mousewheel, E. Maybe the last one'll get you.
But then the one that's just a CONE of magic right at you. There's NO time to react to that one. I've survived it by blocking before, and taking very minor damage, but sometimes it won't give a shit about your shield and just kill you instantly. It almost feels like luck, which sucks because I can't account for that in any way. And worst of all, sometimes he'll just decide to spam it twice in a row.
I've needled him down to a third of his health, and I REALLY hope close to death that he doesn't throw in another curveball to his moveset. He's hard enough as it is.
Well theres your problem. You don't try to tank dark magic in any way. Unless of course you use the silver pendant.
The dark magic spell that I can never ever avoid is the one where he spawns a million dark orbs around the edge of the arena and pulls them inward.
[editline]10th June 2015[/editline]
The attack where he hangs his giant hand up in the air for a second before crashing down usually gets me, too.
That's where the silver pendant comes in; it blocks magic attacks when you use it, and will just eat that surrounding one.
Figured out the cone though: Turns out, just dodge roll. I feel kinda stupid about that, actually.
It really IS that magic that pissed me off most. Not just the boss, but I always take a hit from his little caster underling as I pass in the casm. Those fuckers are WAY too accurate. Sometimes I got unlucky and nailed in the back twice trying to cross the pillar. Utter keyboard-smashing frustration.
But damnit, I finally wrangled his moose-pygmy ass.
Thus ends the tale of "Manus: The Fuzzy Sucker-cupped Hands of Fate."

Just a heads up, but you can spam the pendant as much as you want. You don't have to just hit it once and wait. It's pretty quick so you generally can just hammer E a couple of times and still have time to react once he starts physically attacking you again. It's been a while since I fought him so I don't remember much about that cone attack, but it might help to keep the silver pendant in your active slot and only switch to estus when necessary.
Edit: Oh nevermind you beat him as I was typing this out whoops!!!
RIP 20K souls in DS1. I rolled to the side in one of those walkways in Anor Londo (The ones with the walls along the side) and went right through the wall. Like, SHIT.
I lost the souls first because I was hit by an arrow and automatically fell off the edge despite landing on it with enough room. The get-up animation pushed me off the ledge, and then I rolled through a wall.
Of all the places in DS1, I hate that section the most. Not because of the enemies, although they are terrible, but the collisions of the area.
[DEL]Does armor and such have less effect on your movespeed the higher your equip load is or is it just "this armor is heavy so you're for sure going to be slow?"[/del]
Nevermind shit question it straight-up says that's the case if you look at the description
Does armor and such have less effect on your movespeed the higher your equip load is or is it just "this armor is heavy so you're for sure going to be slow?"
ds1 or 2? the heavier your armour, the more stamina it drains, with you getting progressively slower with each weight limit you go past
Does armor and such have less effect on your movespeed the higher your equip load is or is it just "this armor is heavy so you're for sure going to be slow?"
DS1 has 3 movement speeds, below 25%, below 50% and above 50%. DS2 is more like progressively get slower 'til 70%, then you're fatrolling.

I always thought the thresholds in DS2 were 25%, 50%, 70%. But more forgiving in general until 70% than DS1 was.

Twice removed.
If anything John Bloodborne is the cousin. John Armoredcoreforanswer is the uncle.
John Kingsfield, so easily forgotten
And beloved but apparently forgotten John Demonssouls.

It's the grandad the Dark Souls family left behind at the retirement home going on about how good things were back in the day.
...is that who the Pygmy is / was?
It is yet unknown if Manus is/was the furtive pigmy. One essential part here is, that the furtive pigmy is a somewhat great being and while Manus is often referenced as a primeval man, he is in no case called "THE" primeval man.
Of course, there are some pros for him, being the furtive pigmy, but as of now we don't have a 100% certain answer to that.
Holy shit, Kalameet. I researched videos, know his moveset, everything. But tried it twice myself before bed to test the waters.
Fuck, all those other guys made it look easy. Maybe it's just late, but I feel like I'm tripping over my own shoelaces the entire time. Both initial square-offs led to personally embarassing flat-on-face shots, like actually getting hit by his swooping attack... and then getting caught in it a few times after. One of his most telegraphed attacks, the freaking psychic mark-grab thing, I actually got snared by. Something one of the video makers commented on not knowing what it did because he'd never gotten hit by it, even having played into NG+7.
I even know what openings to exploit, like the horizontal breath-spray, the standing breath-spray, you know. And somehow I was too damn slow to dodge those sometimes, let alone rush in and get some hits in on him. And I'm not slow. I've got black iron armor and enough endurance (plus Havel's Ring) to use the Dark Wood Grain ninja-flips besides. I'm as quick as a hiccup by design, and harder than a crystal golem's cock.
I think it's due to what one of the players advised, which was fighting him without locking onto him... which I'm too scared to do in case I'm shielding in the wrong direction. I think it's the free-motion that lets you rush in faster unlocked than outright chasing, or roll-strafing until you reach while IN lock. And I thought the guy was insane to go in without a shield, totally two-handed and relying on rolls, but even the fucker's melee attacks kill your stamina, so it kinda feels like rolling was the intended strategy.
It helps nothing that the timing on his moves is weird. It's like his head-jabs fake you out slightly before they actually strike.
One guy said they put Kalameet as number two toughest boss to Manus, but I disagree. Manus was roughly predictable and very forgiving if you got hit outright. It's the dark magic that's his curveball, and if not for that he wouldn't be all that hard to fight.
Kalameet is aggressive and hits you like a freight train. Even if his moves are usually easy to see coming, evading them is a whole different clutch of chaos spider eggs. He was designed to defy the Dark Souls standby tactics and force you to come at him differently, palms slick with nervous sweat.
This is gonna be messy...
you shouldn't need to block his attacks, I didn't lock on and just dodged them, then, when he goes for the grab attack, go behind him and hit him.
Why did you research a boss before fighting it?
I really feel like I should do a longsword only run in souls 3 but I'm not sure if I'd even record it :v:
a true long sword only run that is
Do an ASS run.
i hope they have something similar to the dark wood grain ring again, i did a shieldless partizan run with it after someone posted that game of thrones fight (spoilers for GoT) in here and it's actually a ton of fun, it kind of reminds me of a character action game or something
I'LL ABSOLUTELY need to do a fist run too :v:
I want to now how valve has managed to make DS1/2/SOTFS disappear off the face of steam, because I wanted to know if the sotfs upgrade was on sale.

btw to those who have upgraded already, is your original DS2 replaced with SOTFS? Or is it added along side as a separate game
it's a separate game.

Do you have the guts to mess with LORD LIFT! and Bone Lee?
I'LL ABSOLUTELY need to do a fist run too :v:
I hope there's something akin to the Vanquisher's Seal in 3. Mighty though LORD LIFT was, he just used powerstanced caestuses (if I recall correctly) and the Seal had more damage and scaling.
What I'd really like is for a unique moveset on something like the Seal. Fisticuffs runs are so effective, but there's extremely little variety. I'd love it if wearing the Seal gave you a similar moveset to the bone fists, or a new one where your punches just look like they have more weight to them.

I want my bone fist in Blood Borne :c
The Vanquisher ring was the single greatest ring in Dark Souls 2, and they went and made it the single I-want-to-use-it-but-I'm-just-making-myself-less-effective ring in Dark Souls 2.
Why did you research a boss before fighting it?
How could I not? This isn't the 90's, Dark Souls would be endlessly frustrating without guidance. I largely explored the Catacombs, New Londo Ruins and Tomb of the Giants without help, but what about the Depths? How would I EVER know to find and use a silver pendent to reflect magic from Manus? Would I have made it in the game at ALL without looking up how the stats worked, and realized how important endurance was?
Researching didn't impede my enjoyment even a little bit. Hell, the game is designed to let other players warn you about what's coming and how to defend against it. Actually, it was through all this that I came to understand and appreciate the lore. Downloading the collision data and viewing it through the indie-made world-viewer did even more to help me comprehend just how tightly-woven the world is designed.
Point is, I research bosses so I don't spend an hour in vain. I'd rather know what I'm up against. Some games I go into cold, but that just doesn't feel like an option in Dark Souls.
