Dark Souls and Demon's Souls Megathread VI. Katana Gank Squad Edition
i gotta say, i really like the way online works in souls games. the whole online concept is so genius and i'm surprised i haven't seen many people praise it.
in a game that's brutal and lonely as hell, they've managed to create a unique online experience that makes everyone feel like they're working together. messages, ghosts, and coop partners are all really cool mechanics that give the games a really unique feel where no matter how much you suck, everyone is helping eachother out (most of the time). it's great.
And that's why I natter on about it when I talk about MMOs. I've said it once and I'll say it again; the Souls style of online interaction/isolation can help solve the issue of "you are the only one who can stop them, you and 50 other dancing dwarf druids" while still enabling a world of player interaction at the player's own pace and preserving the world feel of a post-apocalyptic scenario.
If Bethesda ever made a Fallout MMO, the Souls system of variable interaction/isolation would be perfect for it, especially considering the potential of using one's PiP-Boy to track down other players and enter their worlds, whether for jolly co-op or to chase a bounty. Hell, they could make it an expansion for Fallout 4 and it'd probably be just as amazing.
If they do sci-fi then I'd love to see stuff like in blame!
Giant, empty, desolate mega structures

I can see that and will buy the hell out of it.
I want them to bring back some older systems from Demons Souls.
I miss MP, and weapons that regenerated your HP or MP instead of just giving you increased damage.
I really hope they change the upgrade paths so you're not just doing +10 normal, +10 fire, +10 magic etc. Wouldn't mind seeing upgrade paths that reduce the damage of your weapon significantly in exchange for better/quicker animations for example, or a thunder upgrade that doesn't just turn your weapon's damage to thunder, but sends out slow moving bolts in whatever direction you swing it, just mechanical variation over number changes.
A tiny bit more info regarding DS3
What’s the world of Dark Souls III like?
Miyazaki: “The sense of something having ended, or destruction, is stronger.”
Are there any changes to the basic design?
“Dark Souls III follows closely from II, so we kept the handy things from II.”
Regarding actions or weapons
“We’ve expanded the character builder and tactical options without sacrificing the feel of the series. We added new action elements that contribute to the sense of role-playing. For instance, we adopted the concept of rapid fire for the short bow, and the animation between rolling and walking has been smoothed out.
“The speed of the action is slightly increased compared to the previous two games and balanced so you can move intuitively. I don’t think we’re going to employ the idea of agility, otherwise the action would be stressful until you raise your stats.
“There are slightly less maps than Dark Souls II, but each of the maps are on a much larger scale.”

While I absolutely love soul level match-making, I still find myself connecting to friends 10 times easier in Dark Souls 2. I hope they keep a mechanic like the name-engraved ring that extends level ranges as well. It's so hard to keep up in levels as a sorcerer/cleric/pyro compared to my jolly cooperation group of Knights and Dex builds, though this a bigger problem in Ds1 than Ds2.
Vaati seems like a genuinely likeable, down-to-earth guy who appreciates his fans and his success and adores the Souls series/Bloodborne. I think most people's problems with him come from the way he's sort of the "easy way out" when it comes to interpreting a From game. From's storytelling style is very much about how you choose to interpret things and fill in the gaps, so it rubs some people the wrong way when there's a chunk of the community that just parrots what Vaati says.
The one that blew my mind that everyone accepted his word as fact was the Ichorus Earth thing, and then everyone thought that the Iron King's name was Ichorus Earth. It was so obviously a reference to his fate, not the name of a fucking boss but somehow everyone believed him. I felt really vindicated when it was revealed to be an error in capitalization.
Vaati seems like a nice guy and all, but some of his theories are so outrageously stupid and it just really turns me off. And people act like anything lore-related Vaati says is like the word of God.

I myself think he sounds pretty bad, and since all his videos are just him talking I just don't enjoy them as much. Also his whole fixation with calling things "Souls-like" and people literally copying his exact words (the biggest one that comes to mind being that "Dark Souls is dripping with atmosphere" or any variation thereof) just annoys me to no end. I like how he summarizes some of the lore related stuff, but there's also a lot of stuff that makes it less enjoyable.
"Dark Souls is dripping with atmosphere"
Well, DS3 can use that quote literally.
I don't hate Vaati's theories, I've never actually heard him speak of any of his theories, he is good if you want to hear what people on Reddit think the story is about but don't want to browse Reddit. Kindle this post and subscribe.
so some people are saying omnidirectional rolls when locked on are gone
I sure hope this isn't the case, the awkward as fuck rolling in DS1 is terrible when compared to DS2
im going to try my hardest to get into dark souls 1 on what i'd imagine is probably my 5th attempt. What's the best class to start with? I've always used warrior and idk if thats the best starting one.

There's not really a best option. If you're gonna stick with melee, the warrior, knight, bandit, and wanderer are all legit options for that. Pyromancer is probably the easiest to start with since you start with some basic pyromancy skills that do quite a lot of damage early on.

I enjoy playing as Wanderer. I find the Wanderer set better for weight - defense balance.
I'm wodering there'll be a Templar Knight similar class or someone that has a halberd as starting weapon.
I wouldn't mind if one class is starting with a lance or twinblade either.
I want diversity on each starting class but none having the edge minus the lv1.

The Thief is pretty good because you start off with the master key and can pick whatever other starting gift you want. That said, all of the class-related armor sets and weapons are available before you even reach the middle of the game as far as I'm aware, so really it just depends on how you want your stats allocated.

Everyone can take the masterkey as a starting gift.
I mostly roll with Knight. My first character in most games is a paladin anyways, so the knight fits in well.
Deprived is the best class because it leaves the most to be reassigned easily
it pretty much makes it easy to be exactly what you need it to be

True, but Thief gets it all the time regardless of your starting item, so you can change the starting item that would usually be your Master Key and get something else alongside it.

Honestly, I never thought of that lol. Thanks for that.

Well, Vaati shares his interpretation of things, but he does seem careful not to pass conjecture off as fact. When he does pass something off as fact, he shares evidence from the game that seems to support his assertion. If some people in the community do seem to 'parrot' what he says, that's because they like his interpretation and feel that it fits the evidence better than what they had come up with.
Still can't see much wrong with that.

Facepunch just hates popularity
A friend gifted me Dark Souls: Scholar of the First Sin edition during the sale.
I am now going to play the sequel to one of my all time favorites, I'm so insanely excited.

Agreed, really my only complaint about Vaati is for a while there a TON of his videos started with him rambling about "Life and Death, Light and Dark," it got really old.

this always bothers me when people say they hate him for that reason, if that annoys you hate them not him

I'll hate him, I'll hate them, I'll hate you, I'll hate just about anyone, because that's all I know what to do.

The scimitar's moveset not having a kick can be annoying at times, but the slash-backflip it has instead is pretty baller.
