Dark Souls and Demon's Souls Megathread VI. Katana Gank Squad Edition

I'm not sure if the community for DS1 has picked back up or if I'm just the perfect soul level at the moment, but getting summoned for co op has been astounding lately. Before I barely ever got invaded or summoned, but Currently I'm sitting about in the Painted World and I've managed to help out 7 different people in the span of 2 hours, with just 5 minutes of waiting time between different players.
God I love getting summoned. There's just something so satisfying with donning full Catarina armor and leading new players through the painted world, guarding them from bonewheels in the sewers, and 2 shotting King Jeremiah with the Zweihander before he has a chance to even fully spawn. Even got summoned by someone who was in the midst of being attacked by an invader, and I completely turned the tables for them. Was so enjoyable.
I don't agree with your statement about the boss weapons though. I've found there to be an extremely healthy variety. I did a messy little tally of boss soul weapons on a wiki, and I found 14 str weapons, 11 dex weapons, 6 magic weapons, 5 faith weapons, 5 fire weapons, 7 dark weapons, 3 quality weapons, and 4 that didn't really fit into any category. Keep in mind that I categorized these based on whether they had any modifiers other than str or dex, so those 28 boss weapons that I did not categorize as elemental do not even possess small elemental damage modifiers. Only 23% of these weapons are for hexers and mages.
This does not, however, count spells that you can get using boss souls, so that's something to consider. Regardless, consider giving the boss weapons another chance.
My problem with boss weapons in DaS2 was them being disgustingly cheesy or just way too gimmick to use properly.
That's why I liked Crypt Blacksword, Sacred Chime Hammer and Yorgh's Spear.

My problem was lack of unique movesets
That's probably one of the biggest flaws of the game

It has gone dry for me unfortunately. I spent pretty much my entire weekend building up a SL1 Dickwraith to prey on the Burg (I give titanite or other goodies to players who are brave enough to fight instead of running away) and I couldn't find anyone to invade for over an hour. All of that effort wasted. Bummer.

It's not furry shit if you're a dragonbro
Am i the only one who thought the Iron King DLC was easily DS1 level? Or all the DLC's for that matter?
Frigid outskirts and Iron passage are quite annoying though, i wont defend those.
It's disappointing to hear you guys had such a bad time with it, given how much I liked it. I thought the labyrinthian nature of the area was a fresh and welcome change from the very linear areas featured in the base game. The hidden secrets, switches, doors, and paths encouraged me to pay more attention to the environment than I did before. It felt more like I was exploring and plundering the faded and dusty ruins of a kingdom swallowed by the Earth itself, rather than following a rail and collecting consolation prizes as I went.

You're right about faith builds though. They got hit real hard during the nerf, and it still doesn't make sense. I also think Dark Souls 1 was a better game, but mostly because it blows 2 out of the water in terms of storytelling and atmosphere. I just feel like you're being tougher on 2. Or, maybe, it's just... You know, opinions. :toot:
My main problem with the labyrinth setup was that with all of the hordes of enemies that killed me in three shots, I didn't feel motivation to explore. It felt less like I was exploring and more like I was just waiting for the shitshow to end so I could move on to the next dlc. Also, what are the five faith weapons you found? The only ones I can think of are the Mirror greatsword, the Defender greatsword, and the dragonslayer spear.
I get the impression that a lot of people played the DLC a bit too early, or with an underdeveloped build. It was a challenge, to be sure. But I don't recall feeling like I was insanely squishy while the enemies were tanky. But I also went through them on NG+ with my PvP build.

I started them just before fighting the final boss.

I think if you've a pretty good setup they're not a big challenge on NG and possibly NG+. Beyond NG+ they will always fuck you up thanks to the incredible unbalance
I feel like the DLC would be significantly easier and people would have a better time with them if enemies didn't have insane poise.
I feel like the DLC would be significantly easier and people would have a better time with them if enemies didn't have insane poise.
The poise itself is not the problem. A lot of enemies in DkS have good poise but they're either predictable or don't deal too much damage.
The problem with DkS2 is that the incredible poise of the Sunken warriors combined with the NG+2 and beyond damage is never fun.
I recently fought Aava on NG+5. Sure it's a giant wolf so it has poise, but it would be a much better fight if it didn't oneshot my 50VIT char.

So it's the Hellkite Drake with a longsword, sheathed Halberd, and the grass crest shield? I can dig it.

Looking at it again, I may have misclassified the Throne Defender Shield as a faith weapon (his weapon scales with faith, but the shield scales with magic ???), but the fourth weapon is the Bow of Want. I haven't used it (yet), so I can't vouch for it's usefulness, but it does have 234 base lightning damage when infused, with C faith scaling (plus some physical), so it definitely looks appealing.
My bad on that one.
Do remember that faith contributes to fire damage scaling, so all those weapons are open for a faith build as well. Plus any weapons that scale well when infused. I know Yorgh's spear infuses wonderfully. The Wrathful Axe that you get from Elana's soul has an arbitrary faith requirement with no native lightning damage, but has pretty appealing stats even when infused.
Also, is your armor upgraded fully? How's your strength, dexterity, endurance, and vitality? If you ended up dumping these stats, it would explain why you're having trouble taking hits. They all contribute to your physical defense, and that gives bonuses to your armor, which gets better as it's upgraded.

Yes.
While they were better than the main game, they're still decades away from DS1
Yes.

Decades away? Thats quite a stretch, while i personally like DS1 more than 2, calling it "decades ahead" is a bit too much.
In what ways do you think its so far ahead of 2's dlcs? Lore? Boss fights? Atmosphere/level design? Genuinely curious here.
Yes.

i think you're vastly overestimating the complexity of ds1's level design if the DLC's are "decades" behind. i'll agree the DLC's best areas don't necessarily outclass the first game's, but not every level in ds1 was an expansive metroidvania funzone. i mean if you put Sunken or Ivory King against Demon Ruins + Lost Izalith for example, it seems pretty clear to me which one is more fun to explore and has the most replay value.
- snip all taken care of -
for god's fucking sake, I am getting really really really really REALLY sick of this shit.
I'm in the third DLC and it has decided to keep me from summoning for some unexplained bullshit reason, while making me go through the entire level again just to make the final boss not bullshit. Now I'm invaded by two faggish little shits at the same fucking time who have 13571759375 health and heal or run away every two seconds. every single enemy kills me in three or less hits despite my fully upgraded armor. WHO IN THE FUCK DESIGNED THIS RATSHIT RETARDED LEVEL. Is there even a reward besides the bs crown jesus fuck I am having absolutely no fun playing this DLC. Am I doing something wrong? Was there some cryptic bullshit that I had to do to make the enemies not kill me in three hits, or to at least let me summon someone?! OR TO AT LEAST KEEP PEOPLE FROM INVADING BECAUSE BURNING AN EFFIGY IS DOING NOTHING
you can't summon co-op phantoms if you're burning effigies :plsunderstand:
you can't summon co-op phantoms if you're burning effigies :plsunderstand:
That was happening before I burnt the effigies. I started burning after I was invaded three times in five minutes

If you're burning effigies it's probably NPC invaders, and NPC invaders are noted for having absolutely ridiculous amounts of health. Did you catch their names?

Two of them I know were NPCs. There's that assassin guy who's near impossible to kill because he has eight billion health and runs away every single time I do any damage to heal, and then there's that shitty phantom with the hexes and miracles.

Sounds like you're talking about this cheeky little cunt right here.

And yeah, burning effigies does not stop NPC invaders, so you're just gonna' have to tough it out. Honestly none of the DLCs are really that difficult if you're doing it end-game. You sure you're not underleveled or something? If you REALLY need help, I could assist. I've got nothing better to do. :v:

The first guy sounds like Mauldron the Assassin, and he is a class-A dickmunch. I don't like putting up with his shit either, so when his health gets low and he retreats into the enemy-filled tower, I pop a Giant Seed, and let the mooks finish the job. Fighting fire with fire, as they say. :v:
Is the second one Quicksword Rachel? The one that appears in that dark tower, after you go down the ladder? I can't remember any red phantoms that cast miracles and hexes.
Rachel doesn't cast any magic, just uses pine resins to buff. I actually can't think of any NPC invader in the Iron King DLC that uses magic, so he might be talking about the Ivory King DLC since Mauldron appears in there too. I know there's an NPC invader in the same area as Mauldron that does spam a lot of hexes and miracles there.
[editline]18th August 2015[/editline]
He's incredibly easy to slap around though. ANY attack staggers him out of his casts since he doesn't have poise for shit. And you can use the pillars below where the annoying Ice Rats are to block like 90% of his spells.

That'd be Hexer Nicholai. I'd rank him in the same place as Maldron simply because of the fucking icicle hedgehog orgy he spawns in the middle of.
Maldron in Eleum Loyce technically isn't an invader, he's an NPC, so using the giant seed won't work on him there. Just beat the shit out of him when you first see him, he doesn't usually fight back and it's easier than trying to deal with him later.
The main reason I'm underpowered here is because I'm a faith build.
