does anyone else hold their controller like this when playing dark souls?

I mostly use The Claw, but if I'm already sprinting and I need to turn my camera I'll do that. It's fine for reorienting the camera, but not for fine control.

Thats almost exactly how I use it.
You're batshit.
it's the best method if you wanna do shit while running. if you're holding circle button with your thumb and have your index & middle on the triggers, you can't move the camera at all. you can when you do this weird shit though
[editline]22nd May 2015[/editline]
and the claw isn't super bad in dark souls, because most of the time you're going to be locked on and you won't really need to use the other face buttons in combat unless you really gotta use an item
Fucking... wooooooow...
Decided I kinda wanted to try this game after it's been sitting in my library for hell knows how long. Y'know, I hadn't heard great things about the PC port... but clearly Assassin's Creed 1's bad port spoiled me...
I haven't set foot in the game world. Already I've looked up the appropriate graphical tweaks fix the damn thing's dated-for-2012 graphics. (Seriously? This thing is less than 4 gigs in totality? Game is weird.) But hell, problems setting the RESOLUTION? How do you fuck up something so basic?
And I don't dare touch the 30fps lock, because I know the ingame physics (and other things) are tied to the framerate.
But what REALLY gets me? The CONTROLS.
One look at that default keymap left me stunned into silence. Not a mention of the mouse. H and U for attacking, a slew of manual CAMERA CONTROLS??? Fucking System Shock TWO was from the era before standard layouts were a THING, and THAT game only took me two minutes to reconfigure into something intuitive in 2014.
THIS game expects me to seize me hands into some twisted claw to play it with ONLY the keyboard.
My brain is melting; does SOMEONE have a script, or a better set of bindings to make this game less impossible to manage?
And to the first person to respond with "just use a gamepad..." ...uh... Eat me. Because I will be dead in the cold cold ground before I hook up a controller to my computer. I'm a PC gamer, and I will play games the way nature intended: with a mouse and keyboard.
Before you continue with your drama queen routine, keep in mind that 1) Dark Souls is a game designed to be played with a controller and 2) You're many, many years late to the circlejerk about the PC port of Dark Souls 1 being sub-par. Most of those issues have already been addressed, and the rest of us are not impressed by your DSP-style whining.
why are we still responding to him
"Drama queen routine" ha, i like that one.

I will put my hand in all sorts of weird positions like this in unique situations where I need to, but generally I hold the controller the way it was intended to be held.

With my version of the claw, it leaves the thumb available for thumbstick and face buttons and my index available for the triggers while holding down the sprint button. It's like you're playing with the default controller grip.
But if it works for you, that's fine, I'm not going to tell you how to use it.
I'm probably really late on this, but holy shit.

The app uses GPS to allow you to write and read messages left by other people around you just like Dark Souls' Soapstone/ Bloodborne's Messengers.

There's a McDonalds just down the road from where I live and someone put a message there saying, "reeks of manatee, despicable fatty". :v:

I have large hands and don't use the camera that often so I just hold the controller normally with my thumb diagonal between all buttons.

I thought it might've been just you until I remembered I hold my controller differently while running through areas, at which point I found out I hold it exactly the same way.
So you're not alone, yo
I got Dark Souls 1 a while ago, and finally got a controller to play it, but now I'm finding that it simply refuses to play on my laptop. When I launch it, I just got a black window. No error message or crash, just black until the sun goes out. I've tried running DARKSOULS.exe and DATA.exe in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 3), Windows 7, and as an administrator, but nothing changes it; nor did uninstalling and reinstalling GFWL (which I'm pretty sure got updated out but I'm that frustrated right now). Any ideas?

That's it that's the game.

I can see why it's considered so difficult, I can't figure out how to kill this boss

Launch the game, alt+tab and go into device manager, from there you go into Human Interface Devices, just highlight HID-compliant game controller or device. Wait a few seconds and the black screen will flash and it'll work properly. If that doesn't work, try disabling HID-compliant game controller. It's really weird, but it works for me.
You can also unplug the controller and plug it back in.
Whelp seems like the priestess hood is a good helm for a more Turkish type of character

Verifying files fixed it, for some reason.
Edit: New problem; it's black screening again, now in fullscreen and at a small resolution. I think I need to change the resolution, but for some reason I don't have a DarkSouls.ini in Appdata; I don't even have a local folder in Appdata.

Try installing DSFix, it sorted out the resolution problems for me.
I have DSFix, the issue started when I tried to use it to force windowed and force borderless window while I had the game on fullscreen. I've tried turning those back off and uninstalling and reinstalling DSFix, but that's not helping.
you have to have DS in fullscreen mode to use borderless window mode. also make sure your AA is off

Uninstall DSFix temporarily (Move the dll to your desktop) and disable Anti-Aliasing in-game.
Welp, I caved at the sight of seeing Dark Souls on sale for five dollars and finally bought the game. It's quite enjoyable as expected, even though it feels sadistic as fuck at times. I really have to get good at parrying and properly dodging though...
Do not use the Drake Sword.
Why not? Also need suggestions for taking on the big Heavy Knight asshole and his spell-casting friend within the Undead Parish. Walked into that church and immediately had my shit handed to me.
