I now realize how clever the Ruins part of the game is. [sp]Toriel specifically teaches you to use ACT to talk down or make monsters able to be spared. Not FIGHT or the MERCY commands themselves. So naturally you're inclined up to this point to use ACT on all the enemies since it affects each of them, including Napstablook as a mini-boss. Then you reach Toriel as the first real boss, and ACT does absolutely nothing besides flavor text. Even with the advice of the Frogs and knowing the game has a pacifist system, there's nothing that really inclines a player to go to MERCY and pick Spare repeatedly to truly solve it. With Toriel testing your resolve, therefore the average player may think that FIGHT is the only way to get her to back down since JRPGs love to force these non-lethal tutorial battles. That'll make everything better, righ-[/sp] [sp]... oh.[/sp]

The replies seem unchanging but you have to keep at it a couple times. It basically plays entirely off of normal player expectations with RPGs and "But Thou Must" situations.
