I never understood why Obsidian did that. It's so easy to mod that out.

Am I the only one who liked Mamma Murphy? Out of Preston´s shit squad, she is the only decent one, and somewhat useful.
after 200 hours i still don't have anything against mama murphy
i just tolerate preston gravy tho

Yes

I never hated her that much because i did my best to stay away from her most of the game (and i could do that, unlike Preston)
But i can't possibly think of anything in Mama Murphy that can make people say "yeah, i like her. Great character".
It's on par with saying Oliver Swanick is your favourite character from New Vegas (and New Vegas even had good characters to pick!). You know it's just a hipster trying to get a ruse on you and it works because who the hell would like Oliver Swanick even ironically
Patrolling the mojave almost makes you wish for a nuclear winter
Retribution
What makes you think we're friends ?

Preston's only problem as a character (personality, history, etc) is the flatline voice acting.
As an NPC though, the whole radiant quest pez dispenser thing is annoying.

I don't mind his voice at all, it's the endless quests any time I get near him that bug me.
That and the "ur the general now :) go do this for me k" thing.
Hey General. I got something a bit different for you.
I got something a bit different for you.
Don't believe his lies.
edit: You see that settlement? You can help it.

I did say as a character, as in his personality and history. As a quest giving NPC he's annoying at best and infuriating at worse.

Remember that memorable scene where Preston tells you another settlement needs help. Brings a tear to my eye.
And that time when there were twenty and now there are only five? Man i felt shivers, such great dialogue.
And let's not forget when he says no one will argue with you being the general because he's the last minuteman and he still orders you (to find another settlement that needs help) anyway. Good times.
Surely, fix his voice acting and suddenly Preston is still a terrible character with better voice acting.

No he's straight up a crap extremely bland character, it's not just his voice but that is also a factor, the only good thing about Preston is his coat.
My daughter got kidnapped.
It's OK I can take care of it.
Thank you!
Here is your daughter.
Thank you. We have decided to support the Minutemen.
Before you go.
My daughter just got kidnapped.

9/10 best new dialogue since Torr

He's a depressed fuckup who relies on you for emotional support and practically uses you as a crutch.
Then again the only way to know he's depressed and contemplated suicide until you came along is to take him with you as a companion, and no one wants to bother with that.
He's like Jacob in ME2. Not very developed and far less interesting than practically any of your other squadmates, but he's not particularly annoying or shitty, just alright. Also they're both black and nobody ever picks them for romance options.

Being depressed doesn't make you an emotionless husk of a person.

Think Bethesda will hire me?
Being depressed doesn't make you an emotionless husk of a person.
That's the VA's fault, though.

So he's like another terrible character from another game?
At least Jacob didn't kept bothering me about another planet that needed help
Also it was easier to kill Jacob in ME2 than it is to kill Preston in a Fallout game. What is wrong with this world.
The only good thing about Preston is his hat:

The voice acting is one of the significant problems with Preston yes, but I still think the writing for his character fails in some if not most regards too, hell even the look of the character, everything about him is just so... Generic and by the book.
[editline]edit[/editline]
Also don't use Jacob as an example, he's way better than Preston.
He looked better in the art book.
Then again what didn't.

Preston is more like the worst parts of Miranda, Jacob and the UNC guy that can't stop asking you to collect useless shit around the galaxy combined in one person
I actually think that Bethesda's character writing in Fallout 4 is their strongest so far. They don't have the depth and charisma of Obsidian or Bioware's characters, but at least they aren't the soulless homunculi of Oblivion or Fallout 3. The plotting and worldbuilding still ranges from uninspired to garbage though.

Fallout 4 had some good characters, no one is disputing that
Preston and Mama Murphy are not part of this club though
Writing good characters was never really Bethesda's strongpoint. Really I don't think they ever even tried to do it before Fallout 4. And still in Fallout 4 there's like a grand total of half a dozen characters they actually tried on, and then all the rest.
The companions are a whole another level, they are fantastic, they are part of your adventure now, not just npc that you bring along and do nothing but comment on some very specific locations. They interject in conversations and some have a lot of depth, like Nick.
I think, that Fallout 4 companions, are the best in the series (and that´s including new vegas).
I think, that Fallout 4 companions, are the best in the series
Let's not get ahead of ourselves now buddy
For every interesting companion like Nick and Curie there are people like Strong, Preston and MacReady
I'd still take Ian and Tycho over the entire cast of F4 anyway because the lows are really low.

but you can find his hat on any dead minutemen, and since they usually spawn infront of super mutant suiciders they die pretty regularly
