But he's not designed around having a lot of character development. Not every character needs some internal struggles or complex development, there's already Nick/Preston/Cait/MacCready/Codsworth for characters who go through their own personal crisis in different ways. I thought it was nice how X6 just appreciates his condition and doesn't need you to feel good about himself or to feel like his life is complete. In a way it's something I tend to dislike about the characters in Mass Effect and some other RPGs. Your companions are far too often emotional wrecks who absolutely require your help to feel better and who can't sort shit out on their own. Even in New Vegas there's a lot of characters who can't seem to fix their own problems with you magically barging into their lives to fix everything, although that doesn't apply to every follower (Arcade being a good example).
Curie is another problematic companion for me. For a scientist robot, she sure as hell acts like a ditzy french maid. Like she might as well be wearing a Nexus quality maid dress.
Like I haven't already given her one? :v: [sp]not really I put actual armour on my companions because safety is important, did give her the sea captain hat tho, qt af[/sp]
Definitely, so why not do something more with that? X6's role as a companion is so shallow compared to some of the other companions, and this is a theme that runs through a lot of the companions that have potential. Just feels weak not having any development, like, what-so-ever. Him going from being indifferent to you to liking you just feels like it's not using the potential of a Synth companion, especially one that reveres you for [sp] being Father's Father. [/sp]
It just seems to go against what he is making him question what he is, and the synth situation at the Institute if that were the case. He's an interesting companion, because again, unlike other synths, he doesn't question what he is, and that puts him in the unique position of being an opposite of what other synths in the game want. He feels honored to serve the Institute and its goals, and is willing to help in any way to help them achieve those goals. And moreover, when you get high affinity, he's under the impression that like him, you've got what it takes to further those goals too. Maybe I feel differently about him because from my perspective as an Institute supporter, he's a cool companion to have, and it's nice to hear from a courser that [sp] I'm looked up to, and that I'm up to the task of running the Institute after Father is gone, and maybe even be the best leader it ever had[/sp].

Not every character needs to have 'internal struggles' or 'complex development', sure, but at least have them do something and not simply exist for the opportunity for institute characters to have a companion. I guess I'm just reflecting my own personal wants onto the game, but it just feels like such a missed potential. The only completely loyal Synth character you can interact with does, means and represents diddly-squat? Especially if you accept the idea that he's 'not designed around having character development.' In which case, it seems like a complete waste that shouldn't be in the game. But I might be alone in feeling this.
I completely agree, I just feel like that him being a loyal Institute courser should be step one of his character, and not the whole thing. (even if that character development doesn't lead you anywhere new, atleast go somewhere.)

He represents a lot by simply being loyal to the institute and not hating their guts or questioning them. X6's expectations and views on the institute never truly change. I guess the only thing that changes is his doubts about the future of the institutes which are wiped when he realizes you're really a perfect fit to keep the institute going, at which point he looks up to you and genuinely appreciates you. He's rather stoic to say the least, so it'd be odd if he suddenly started breaking character and openly talking about his doubts and struggles like characters such as Nick or Codsworth who are more open to discussing their thoughts. Any development X6 has while in company of the protagonist is hidden behind his stoic attitude and quiet personality, but it still shows to an attentive player since he goes from acting very professional and cold to letting some of his feelings briefly appear when he admits he looks up to you and such. Calling him wasted potential is a pretty big exaggeration. Preston Garvey and Strong are wasted potential, X6 certainly isn't.
Does he represent enough by being loyal to the institute, though? I think the most you can say about his loyalty is that it exists, because there’s almost no other synths in the game that present this trait, aside from nameless Coursers. As Pax said above, his little breaks and hiccups in his speeches are great. They represent that there’s definitely something more to X6, even if that is just more loyalty to the Institute and it’s goals. Why dangle that in front of the players face, and not do anything with it? Sure, having some deep, emotionally driven heart-to-hearts would have been silly, but it was definitely a missed chance not to do something. The whole thing kinda reminds me of the [sp] Danse situation. I feel like it’s comparable to if they forced you to kill Danse, rather then be able to talk Maxson out of it in a decidedly bullshit method. Sure, the fact you can talk Maxson out of it at all should be a complete non-option to reinforce Maxson’s character, but they allowed Danse to continue to exist in the players game to go on and have some great development. [/sp] Similarly, having X6 be able to be influenced in some way, or at least have a reflection of the character’s actions onto himself, would have allowed Beth to explore some pretty interesting avenues. Again though, this is just my opinion – I guess more people are just okay with him being an institute companion for the sake of the institute having a companion.
I am totally OK with X6 not really changing, or having a little mini crisis and then deciding to support the Institute anyway. I just think X6's development could go a long way to proving the Institute wrong about synths, even while he as a character still supports it.
Had fun with Nick, enjoyed all the way. Strong is weird, apparently he likes that i help settlers, putting aside that i'm eating so many Raiders and Gunners and feel like i haven't progressed much, just 1 special conversation and that's it. At least he helps me carrying all the Power Armor parts that i end up collecting :v:

You have to keep in mind a strong point about synths and AI in general in Fallout as a series is that they develop a personality and sapience over time, and X6 is a rather recent creation, so what personality he has is hidden behind all the institute protocols that coursers are designed to follow. It's likely his opinions on the institute aren't bred into him though considering other coursers are either a lot more cynical (X6 already having a brutally practical way to solve most situations) or just plain cold and don't seem to particularly believe that what the institute does is right or wrong, they just do their job.
I imagine the Coursers are probably monitored a lot more closely for deviant thoughts as well. It'd be funny if you found out that X6 or another courser had broken his programming and had his mind wiped several times already.

So I just did the [sp]Memory Den thing[/sp] and wow [sp]my character sounded like a little bitch when he said "YOU WANNA GO PART 2"[/sp] I was expecting a smarmy comeback when I hit sarcasm. Also does anything come of [sp]Kellogg speaking through Nick?[/sp]
Also does anything come of [sp]Kellogg speaking through Nick?[/sp]
Unfortunately, no. It might come back in some DLC, but it's unlikely.

finally finished the game today. somehow got myself hated by the institute, locking me out of their ending as well as the railroad, so I had to finish it with the Commonwealth's Third Reich. that ending cinematic was so hollow
Unfortunately, no. It might come back in some DLC, but it's unlikely.
I can see it now. [sp]Kellogg was in full control from that moment after the memory den. Cait's VA is Scottish which is even weirder.
