Yeah you're right, this is as dark as having to kill a man that turned into a beast and killed his own wife, leaving his daughter alone :v:
This actually brings something up for me and is one of the main reasons why I prefer Dark Souls' theme handling; everything in Bloodborne is excessively dark, gory and grim, to the point where nothing really is anymore.
In Dark Souls everything is a lot more tame as far as it goes, and those times where things lighten up makes those dark days even darker. This results in a much darker game by comparison since at a certain point in BB grimdark is the new normal and you don't even notice it anymore.
I might be stupid but that's just a thought I had. Pretty sure ENB said something like this at some point.

I see your point but I personally disagree, Bloodborne is really excessively dark and grim but it's done with elegance and charm. Which still makes it interesting for me, especially with the new dlc which had some brighter areas.
That said I agree that Souls offers quite a varied environment that allows us to compare each area and evoke a certain kind of feeling.
I genuinely don't get why everyone who enjoys Dark Souls II pretends that people who have grievances with it are being unreasonable, and never actually explain why they don't like it. It's so incredibly frustrating, because people EVERYWHERE (including in this thread, JUST A FEW PAGES AGO) routinely talk about their issues with DS2.
But, Hawkeye, you should have a fun time with it, if you jump right from Demon's Souls. The game is a bit more floaty, and parrying is functionally useless in PvE, but it's a decent game with some fun boss fights.
[sp]fuck the ancient dragon tho[/sp]
I will give DS2 a go, but as someone who just tried DS2 and DS1 for like 15 minutes, I can't quite put it why but I personally did like DS1 more as well. Even if it was just 15 mins somehow DS1, it just sat better with me. The whole start and everything. I can't really explain it, it just feels better.
Bloodborne's DLC is quite a bit more optimistic, but the base game is so bleak in regards to NPC interaction that it almost feels like the writers had their hand forced. There are literally no NPCs that get anything close to a happy end.
I wonder what would have happened if Miyazaki managed to implement his idea about saving Iosefka.

Yeah IMO it gets to the point where all the grim stuff feels a bit forced. Even the darkest moments in DS still had proper comebacks if you were a good enough player, so BB being an exception in this kinda arbitrary way sit wrong with me.
Oh well, maybe in BB2?
If it were up to me, I'd have included a way to keep one of the woman NPCs that give you blood sane during the blood moon so they can continue giving blood. Iosefka's and Arianna's blood vials are very helpful items but it's squandered somewhat because you can't use them for the late-game bosses or likely even DLC bosses because you've probably gone and obtained the late-game gems to deal with them.
Sucks that pretty much noone gets a happy ending in Bloodborne, but it felt fitting giving the whole Lovecraft theme.
Started Scholar of the First Sin with my cousin yesterday.
Is the 60 fps durability problem still not fixed or is the Old Whip just made of glass? Because it breaks in like 10 hits

iirc they didn't fix it, and only made it so that attacking NPCs only does half durability damage iirc
iirc they didn't fix it, and only made it so that attacking NPCs only does half durability damage iirc
But what about the crows' nest? I managed to break Santier's Spear by swinging it at them. It did like 10 durability damage with every hit :v:
In the same vein though, why couldn't they have just halved durability reduction for everything? Is that so hard?

The collision detection is pretty messed up. DS2fix64 is a good fix for it, but it'll result in you getting softbanned

In that occasion, I was acting in self-defense

I chose [sp]the Dark Lord ending[/sp], for reasons I'm willing to debate
While the final area of the game was great (albeit short), Gwyn was far easier than what I expected for a single reason: he can be parried. I literally cycled around him to trigger is slow, horizontal slash, parry it and dish out 500 damage or so in a row with Queelag's Sword (apparently [sp]the god who has been consuming in the Primordial Flame for centuries is weak to fire, for some reason[/sp]) and used his grab attack to get some breathing room and heal myself if necessary
Having done everything there was to be done (I got Kalameet too), tomorrow I'll move onto Dark Souls 2

what, no astora's straight sword/John Darksouls run?
The game is dark enough already
You already murdered her one and only. It's common courtesy to allow them to meet again in the afterlife.
And then use the soul for his weapon. Frontflip slams all day erryday.

Well...tbh that's a reasonable solution to the problem of hitting enemies at least. It's a safer choice than trying to unlock the render and update loops, which could introduce untold numbers of bugs.
so uh, how does one effectively fight unlocked in Dark Souls 2
you have the maneuverability of a tank when swinging around
also the bellfry gargoyles were fun to fight
If you ask me, the Kiln of the First Flame could had used a slow piano piece too
Something like this

On the topic of DS2, heres an interesting review on it.

I dont agree with everything he says, but he makes some solid points throughout.
Also, I think Dark Souls 1 has a better user interface and better level design than Dark Souls 2. I don't quite like how UI looks in DS2.
UI looks in DS2 depend on if you like cathedral-style gray deco, but UI accesibility, specially if you're playing on M+KB, is ten times better. Clicking actually does shit!
Plus keybindings and such being way more indepth was really nice. I bound all of my camera controls to 1-5, light attack to H, heavy attack to G, and I can play easy with my left hand.
The only place that scares me genuinely in Bloodborne is Iosefka's Clinic (through back entrance).
That place is long and dark, and filled with aliens.
upper cathedral ward as a whole is weird and creepy as shit
Hemwick Charnel Lane is spooky during the full moon and when you have 15 insight especially when on your first playthrough, you went there before the full moon and didn't know it would change like that.
Also the cave in ToH just because you're not expecting to find any of that in there
While aging gave me a fascination for nightmarish things, I don't remember fondly two things from Bloodborne:
1) The Witch of Hemick (more specifically, her voice and the implication about those eyes)
2) The C'Thuloid creatures roaming Upper Cathedral Ward (who can and will insert a probe of some kind INSIDE YOUR FUCKING HEAD and start sucking up your insight, with rather unsettling gorging noises as all of this happens)
I didn't realize they were eyes, I thought they were barnacles.
With the type of enemies you fight in this game, I'm pretty sure you could just kill them by throwing salt at them instead of whacking them

Isn't that the gimmick with the Old Whip? It deals decent damage but has very very low durability.

I disagree fundamentally that Dark Souls gets bad after the Lordvessel.
I disagree fundamentally that Dark Souls gets bad after the Lordvessel.
I would agree that is the other way around
I swear to god, if they do another downgrade like with DS2, From is going to lose all of my respect...
Some of the screenshots don't match up with those first released, or maybe it's just the lighting.
I disagree fundamentally that Dark Souls gets bad after the Lordvessel.
I would say it gets worse, but its still incredible. It is in part because Izalith is arguably the worst area in any souls game, or that TotG can be very frustrating for players. I enjoy Sens/Anor Londo a lot more than the lord souls areas, but they are still great.
