I fucking hated everything about DS2's parries and backstabs. The PvP was designed purely for greatsword users because terrible players who spam attack bitch that they get parried. Don't make your attacks obvious and you won't get parried. [editline]16th October 2015[/editline] Parry animations should be fast like DS1, but there should be a second or so after you parry where you can't parry again to prevent parry spam. Also the backstab should work like DS1, but the angle should be narrower and it shouldn't lock you in until you actually get hit, as in the blade/club physically touching you.
Dark Souls 2 has the stupid head bop that has a stupidly slow animation, I mean it should just be the DS1 backstab animation but the person getting backstabbed isn't locked in until the animation connects with them. As for parries I disagree entirely. They shouldn't just be for punishing spam, and DS2 absolutely did not accomplish that. The majority of shields had such shitty parry windows that people use just a small handful of shields, and even then most people don't parry and just roll spam. There was a guy who really regretted invading me because he just wasn't good enough to beat me since I was playing it safe, so he kept trying to use the NPCs to swarm me but I wasn't going to follow him so I just hid behind some tombstones and surprised him when he came back to the spawn

I agree that DS1's backstabs were too easy, but I don't think DS2's 'fix' was the right way to go. It just slows gameplay down and thanks to the slow animation and lag it very rarely connects. Backstabs went from the only thing to virtually useless, especially with shit like the jester's top negating backstab entirely.
The few times I was actually invaded in Bloodborne I whiped the floor with my attackers because, apparently, people don't know the Chikage inflicts fast poison

Having it doing a "connect" animation gives you a chance to escape if you're quick enough, and I think that's way better than getting instantly vaccum'd into a backstab thanks to DS1's shitty netcode. And that's another thing. Parries were pretty bullshit in DS1 'cuz the timing for it was kinda bonkers in PvP. You basically had to parry a whole damn second before the opponent even does an attack animation due to the game's terrible netcode, making it almost impossible to land a parry unless you tried to bait them. There was a staggering difference with the timing between parrying an NPC enemy's attack and a real player's attack. At least in DS2, however, the parry timing between both NPC's and real players was pretty much the same and you could pretty much parry as soon as you their attack animation start, given you're quick enough to react. If all else, I think DS2's parries were significantly better than DS1's bullshit.

The beta is lovely so far. It's got the good technical side of II and a bit of Demon's Souls with the world and design being a mixture of Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
