So hey, I've never even touched any of the Metal Gear games and all my knowledge comes from word of mouth. I only loosely know who the characters are and such. But I wanna change that. I wanna get into the lore, because it seems like it's very intriguing. That and Kojima has a hell of a good taste in music (looking at you here, Mike Oldfield). So, I know there are a ton of games. I wanna learn the lore but from what I can gather some games are less essential than others. My question is, which games in the series are the most essential to the plot? I mean, I'd go back and play from the very first Metal Gear game but how relevant are those to the plot as it is today? Don't play them out of release order. Not just so you won't be lost during the story, but each newer iteration adds features that improve the way the game plays and it makes it a better experience.

And a PS2 that works... whenever it feels like working.[/QUOTE] You can just emulate 1, 2, 3 and Peace Walker. 4 has so many cutscenes that you might as well watch them on Youtube or buy the novelization by Project Itoh (who was a huge Metal Gear fan). From there you can play Ground Zeroes and TPP, and give Rising a try if you like hack 'n' slash games.

Your best bet is the Legacy Collection on PS3, or alternatively the HD collection and the other games separately. The recommended order is release order: MGS1 -> MGS2 -> MGS3 -> MGS4 -> Peace Walker -> Ground Zeroes. MGS1 has a briefing menu with the stories of MG1 and MG2, but if you're feeling up to it they can be played through MGS3 HD's menu. Portable Ops (PSP) is optional after MGS3, only the rough plot is canon and a lot of the details were outright retconned in PW. Revengeance can be played any time after 4.

See, this is why i hope somebody ports the HD collection to PC and does a redo of MGS1 for PC, if you dont have a PS3 (or 360, but then you'd miss out on MGS4), the series is pretty fragmented.

Required games (in order): MGS MGS2 MGS3 MGS4 MGS Peace Walker MGSV Ground Zeroes MGSV The Phantom Pain (releasing September) Optional games: Metal Gear (old, mostly retconned) Metal Gear 2 (old, mostly retconned) MGS Portable Ops (mostly retconned, it's an okay game) Metal Gear Ac!d (Non-canon side story. Turn based stealth card game. Very weird) Metal Gear Ac!d 2 (Even more non-canon than Ac!d, but better in every way) Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (Fukken rad game made by Platinum. It makes Raiden super fucking cool. You'll understand once you play MGS2 what an accomplishment this is.) Mobile bullshit that isn't worth your time: Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel (Quasi-remake of Metal Gear on the GBC, also known as Metal Gear Solid in Europe. Not a bad game but nothing special.) Metal Gear Solid Mobile (No.) Metal Gear Solid Touch (Don't.) Also Metal Gear Online isn't a separate game (outside of Japan), it's just the online bit the singleplayer games that have a multiplayer mode, and the other things like Integral and VR Missions are just updates or expansions for MGS1.

I would change that list regarding optional. Boost Revengeance up to the top of the list of Optional, then POOPs, AC!D is literally nothing like any of the other ones and nothing at all related to metal gear besides having a character named Snake
