Let me break it down for easy reading.
Required games (in order):
MGS
MGS2
MGS3
MGS4
MGS Peace Walker
MGSV Ground Zeroes
MGSV The Phantom Pain (releasing September)
Optional games:
Metal Gear (old, mostly retconned)
Metal Gear 2 (old, mostly retconned)
MGS Portable Ops (mostly retconned, it's an okay game)
Metal Gear Ac!d (Non-canon side story. Turn based stealth card game. Very weird)
Metal Gear Ac!d 2 (Even more non-canon than Ac!d, but better in every way)
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (Fukken rad game made by Platinum. It makes Raiden super fucking cool. You'll understand once you play MGS2 what an accomplishment this is.)
Mobile bullshit that isn't worth your time:
Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel (Quasi-remake of Metal Gear on the GBC, also known as Metal Gear Solid in Europe. Not a bad game but nothing special.)
Metal Gear Solid Mobile (No.)
Metal Gear Solid Touch (Don't.)
Also Metal Gear Online isn't a separate game (outside of Japan), it's just the online bit the singleplayer games that have a multiplayer mode, and the other things like Integral and VR Missions are just updates or expansions for MGS1.
Dont forget the most important game.
Snakes Revenge.
[editline]21st March 2015[/editline]
I would change that list regarding optional.
Boost Revengeance up to the top of the list of Optional, then POOPs, AC!D is literally nothing like any of the other ones and nothing at all related to metal gear besides having a character named Snake
Well, and a Metal Gear mech.
Konami owns the IP so it'll be called End of the Zoners 3 or something
Konamy is literaly subhuman sludge out of the devil's cancerigenous ass tumor if that ever happens just because they would most likely destroy 2 of my favourite IPs

There's also a mention of Roy Campbell and a few other references. Honestly, the AC!D series is pretty great for drawing upon Metal Gear as a source and creating its own universe with memorable characters and a plot that has all the twists and turns to be expected from a Metal Gear title. It's so wacky and I love it, really underrated series.

The "new Metal Gear series" should take a note from Acids book and do something like that, use the original as a source, and do something batshit insane on its own.
But they're gonna fuck it up. I can just feel it.
Just at least keep Solid as its own, flawed but close to perfect thing.

Yeah, even if Konami brings back Solid Snake for some weird reason, they said it's a new series so i'd prefer if they kept its own thing. Start a new continuity up even if it's like a reboot, so that it isn't fucking with the Solid series itself. After the complex continuity cavalcade over the years and Kojima finally being dropped off, there's really no reason to bother the main continuity anymore. Just close the book on the whole thing altogether so that new stories can be made. We basically have answers for pretty much everything but what MGS5 covers besides the timeline essentials.

The optional games are in the order I thought of them, not in any recommended order.

If I remember correctly, the original japanese joint press release that announced the new metal gear said that it would leave the Solid series alone, which I think would be good.
man, I really love the soundtrack to MG1.
Especially this song.

I really like this one from MG2

This is one of those songs that could easily be remade orchestrally and sound amazing. No one will ever do it though.

Here's what i don't get tho'
we always, always, always, always, always knew TPP was officailly the last MGS. It was closing the franchise that had already been closed 2 games ago (Even Big Boss' arc closes in PW with him being BIG BOSS at the end of it)
we've always known Konami love metal gear money and will make metal gears without him so I dont know why people act like this is wahts killin' the franchise we always knew kojima wanted to stop
the sandess is silent hills dying

1. There was always a chance he would want to do another Metal Gear. We all know he wanted to end the series as far back as 2, so forgive me, or anyone else if they don't believe the man when he says "This will be my last Metal Gear game."
2. This is more conjecture but with Kojima at Konami it's likely he'd be brought on as a supervisor even if he didn't make the new Metal Gear games after V. With him gone the quality of later installments is more likely to be not up to snuff with the past games.
can you guys honestly say you'd even want more Metal Gear after V?
I'm a die hard fan. It's literally my favorite game series and possibly media series in the world, and I think I'd be full after V. I think every story that needs to be told has been told already, and PW and V are very entertaining fluff that fill in and are going to fill in loads of details but as it stands I think MGS is a bit bloated

Maybe sidegames or what-ifs like Ghost Babel, I don't mind that shit. But in terms of direct projects, V seems like the best place to stop.
End the sequels and prequels, but keep doing non-canon/sorta-canon side stories like Rising and Ghost Babel.
Speaking of Ghost Babel, remember when they replaced cigarettes with a Fog Machine? :v:
It's MGR-themed popping candy.

While I like the story too, the thing that really brings me into the Metal Gear series is the gameplay. So yeah, i'd still like to see more Metal Gear games to be honest.
but then again they'd probably be even more modernized than 5

[editline] fuck [/editline]
i should have used wolf, fuck
i have regrets
Didn't Kojima say that MGSV was going to be just another one of BB's adventures? I'm more worried about this being end but not really resolving anything, we all want this to come full circle and end with Solid Snake killing BB or at least appearing in the end. Kojipro, or at least what was Kojipro, has to legitimately make a perfect game and compete with TW3 and Arkham Knight for greatest game of 2015

He has said that he isn't cramming in every established character like in mgs4. We'll see how he turns out to be the man in MG 1 and 2 and that is fine. It gives more freedom for creativity.

He says that but he's got a habit of pointlessly bringing back old characters and their parents for prequels. Just you wait, Gurlukovich will visit Mother Base on merc business and leave behind his little daughter Olga who loves to cook eggs. Then we'll see how she grew up on the battlefield and that conflict and victory were her parents.
On the topic of soundtracks...This one always catches my ear from MG2

To be fair, Ocelot and Gurlukovich did work together during the cold war, so a cameo at least seems likely.
i'm at the psycho mantis fight in mgs
i wish there was a way to speed this fight up.

Shooting the masks off the statues is usually the quickest way.

If I recall correctly, don't you have to die at least once then repeatedly call the Colonel until he gives you that method? Changing the ports is quicker I think.

Was certain you could do it from the start. No need to wait for his prompt.
You can do it right from the start. No need to die, no need to wait for the conversation to come up.
I don't get it why is it so tough for people to understand the way this stuff works nowadays?
Like I'm thinking back to that one retrospective someone posted a while back where the guy basically listed the cd case and controller gimmicks as negatives because it confuse people when the game blatantly spells it all out for you.
And if a person misses it the first time around it's because they weren't listening.
People these days expect everything to be blatantly spoon fed to the point where tutorial hints are permanently displayed on-screen until you do something.
I just Googled it and there are multiple sources saying you need to have called the Campbell about the ports but died afterwards (some say a few times) before breaking the busts work. I can back that up as I played it with a couple of friends a few years ago and we were confused when the busts wouldn't break, we had to die and call Campbell.
