Why is it so hard for people to play the game in release order if they're making a conscious effort to play the whole series.
I played through all the MGS games (including PW) without playing MGS4 I know the general plot and gist to it, but i just don't care for it (I also don't own a PS3)
I know this is super cliche, but my girlfriend had never heard of MGS and I was hoping to get her into it (so I could share my excitement about The Phantom Pain with her instead of separating my time between the two once the game comes out). I suggested she play MGS3 (because if she ends up not liking the best game in the series, then this operation's a bust). She's extremely anxious about doing poorly at games in front of me, so she agreed on the condition that I help her through the game. After a few days, we beat it together on Easy. Apparently, she really, really liked it. We had a lot of fun, and I've noticed she changed her Tumblr avatar to Big Boss and is reblogging MGS-related stuff. She told me she can't stop singing Snake Eater. Mission accomplished.
Big Mistake, should've got her to play MGS1
MGS1 has a much sharper learning curve and very dated presentation and writing. Would've been much harder to get into. MGS3 is, in my opinion, the best the series has to offer in terms of gameplay balance/mechanics and is also a fairly self-contained story. Not to mention if she didn't end up playing the entire rest of the series, all you really need is MGS3 and Peace Walker to be prepared for MGSV. I figured if she liked MGS3 and wanted more, she would ask for it. And she has. She says she wants to play the rest of the series, so we'll probably get to MGS1 and etc. eventually. It'll be fine. I mean hell, my very first MGS was actually MGS2. I had no goddamn clue what was happening, but I thought the gameplay was a blast and it made me play the rest.
I don't get the religious zealotry on playing these games in release order. They're games, they're fun. Play them how you like.
I don't get the religious zealotry on playing these games in release order. They're games, they're fun. Play them how you like.
Yeah but the story and presentation is kind of important in these games. It'd be better to do release order, first time around anyway, so you can get clued in on references to future events and whatnot/avoid big fucking spoilers revealed in earlier installments.
I don't get the religious zealotry on playing these games in release order. They're games, they're fun. Play them how you like.
I would personally agree that playing in release order is the most complete way to experience the series due to how they reference each other and how the game mechanics evolve with each game, but it's ultimately not absolutely necessary to enjoy them. MGS3 in particular even expects newcomers with the opening options ("This is my first time playing MGS!") and the references to previous games are extremely subtle and easy to pick up on in reverse (i.e. whether you play MGS1->MGS3 or reverse, you're still going to go "oh shit, it's Ocelot!" when he first shows up in either game).
I'm scared that I'll invest more time into making my forward operating base and playing MGO3 than playing MGS5 when it's out. I love home customization and I loved Peace Walker's system of unit recruiting (dunno if that's the right name for it).

If the bases are physically customizable and not just glued together out of prebuilt parts with premade sentry placement, then it'll basically serve as an infinite amount of new stages to sneak on, built by the community.
Why is it so hard for people to play the game in release order if they're making a conscious effort to play the whole series.
Well I actually THOUGHT Peace Walker released before MGS4, and I remember (I think it was even in this very thread, or maybe one of my friends said it, I don't know) someone telling me that playing Peace Walker makes MGS4's ending that much better. On top of all that, I didn't own a PS3 until just recently, so I'd already started Peace Walker on my 360. I honestly do get conflicted when it comes to prequels released out of order, I feel like I can't decide whether to do it story-wise or release wise. Usually release wise is the best answer though.
Man. I used to play some of the MGS games long ago. But all this shit now, even reading this thread makes my head spin.

Amusingly, there's even an armband as if to lampshade that he isn't packing the prosthetic seemingly.
Any chance of the GZ map being exported?
[sp]How did the Patriots think Solidus was Big Boss? Didn't they check to see if his body was still with them? Didn't they question how good he looks?[/sp]
how can you even forget this conversation? it was my favorite part of MGS1
"Yes, sir. I agree completely. It takes a well balanced individual such as yourself to rule the world" Ocelot is such a cheesy brown noser.

If they've never heard of or played the series (or stealth games), introduce them to MGS3 and figure it out from there. If they're more open-minded and are fine with playing 90s video games, do release order from MGS1.
ignore this, lateeee

There were only some minor references that I didn't get, but they weren't important at all. I played MGS1 right after and I was actually disappointed, for me MGS3 is best MGS. I don't think the first game aged well.
MGS 4 was my introduction to the series. Then I played MGS3. After that I played MG1, MGS1, and Peace Walker in that order. I tried to play MGS2 but I just can't with that game. I just can't with MGS2. I got so frustrated with it. I got to the FatMan fight and couldn't handle it anymore. Before playing some of the games, I watched the movie versions. I also read a ton of facts on the Wiki. My path of discovery with Metal Gear has been a twisty windy one, but needles to say, I'm now a dedicated fan. I think everyone should have their own approach to getting into this series, but I also agree that if you can, just play them in release order.
Just bought a ps4, but I've already finished GZ on my ps3 (albeit not to 100%). Should I buy it again for ps4?
I know this is super cliche, but my girlfriend had never heard of MGS and I was hoping to get her into it (so I could share my excitement about The Phantom Pain with her instead of separating my time between the two once the game comes out). At what point in the timeline does the soliton radar appear? It would be neat if an early prototype of it appears in MGSV and BB rips on it and says something like "My sonar never stopped working because people got scared or there weren't any machines around"
Radar is just a game mechanic they try writing off. Chronologically you had one in MGS 3 at the very beginning. For me I always make a point to never use the radars in MGS 3 or Peace Walker. Probably even MGS 5.
You don't have a soliton radar in MGS3, you only have a motion detector and a sonar.
you have the soliton radar in peacewalker later on, but you also have guns that didn't exist at the time so I dunno if that's canon or w/e
Just bought a ps4, but I've already finished GZ on my ps3 (albeit not to 100%). Should I buy it again for ps4?
Yes, if you care about extras. Prisoners extracted in GZ will carry over to TPP, and you get a bonus mission (which does have plot) and outfit in TPP for owning GZ.
Doesn't bother me tbh. They look cooler, are more fun to fight and more interesting than the later metal gear designs imo. Metal gear rex looks super lame compared to ZEKE or PUPA or w/e [editline]20th January 2015[/editline] this one looks super cool tbh, wish they stuck with the more practical bulky designs
Peace Walker is supposed to be canon but it's a clusterfuck of questions because of how they designed the unmanned vehicles and stuff. Like it was fun, which was the priority, but it didn't make any fucking sense in terms of where MG's universe was at that point in time. [editline]20th January 2015[/editline] It's like the way they have it now, you start out with the primitive soviet stuff, then we end up with space age technology as a fun gimmick, and then downgrade back to a bunch of rusted mechs for the rest of the series. ???? They had a freaking UFO with a railgun. And it sang.
That was mostly because Peace Walker tried to be Monster Hunter and you need a lot of "monsters" for that.
I guess you could just play it off as "CIA has a lot of money and built crazy shit that was way too expensive as fuck to mass produce"
How does MGS 1 have a sharper learning curve than any of the other games that only added on and refined mechanics? You had more to worry about in MGS 2 onwards than you ever did in MGS 1. Period. Even in terms of difficulty.
This isn't true. It's much easier to fight/sneak in MGS2 with the addition of First Person Shooting (with a leaning command added to that), rolling/cartwheeling, holdups, and the use of non-lethal takedowns which doesn't trigger an instantaneous Caution. Alerts became severely less punishing with many options available for you to get away, hide or kill everyone in sight - the way the Shell was designed compliments this, since the player will become very acquainted with every environment very fast if they're really into the game, especially with all the backtracking. Since human enemies don't vanish on takedown, you can shake their bodies to get goods, eliminating the need of scavenging for ammo, grenades, and even rations. You also start with a full HP bar in MGS2, while in MGS1 you started with a small-ass one and worked your way up by beating bosses. The codec is still helpful and always points you in the right direction if you get lost, aswell as giving you several tips on how to play the game. The game only became a bit more complex, the core gameplay is still familiar but improved. The only reason why MGS2 COULD be harder than MGS1 would be because you don't have the Soliton Radar working 100% from the start - which sucks, but that problem with visibility can be fixed by pressing up against walls, using binoculars, using first person, etc, to make your way to the terminal and download the radar for that area.
The sole addition of the tranquilizer pistol and first person aiming makes MGS2 waaay easier than 1. In 1, your methods of taking out a guard quietly were limited to either shooting him with a suppressed weapon, which could easily miss and it would take a couple of shots before the enemy went down or using the choking, which is also easy to fuck up and means you have to get right up behind the enemy. With the tranquilizer, you can very easily take out a bunch of enemies from a distance without alerting anybody.
