Not entirely sure I agree... Maybe I'm just not seeing it though.
Between MGS 1's Extreme difficulty and MGS 2's E.E.--I had a hell of a time on MGS 2.
Plus the AI in MGS 2 was relentless. It was sooo easy to abuse the guards in MGS 1 and you could do it just as well in MGS 2, but if you ever got caught they would hunt you down on the higher difficulties. But it's all very situational.
You had more options in MGS 2, but the AI was way more flexible.
MGS2's European Extreme doesn't allow you to trigger unscripted Alerts, while MGS1's Extreme does.
I haven't played anything above Normal in MGS anyway, so idk much about the higher difficulties. :v:
I suppose that MGS2's maximum difficulty is much harder than MGS1's hardest because the challenge was just increased. On Normal tho MGS2 is much easier than 1's normal.
The only reason why MGS2 COULD be harder than MGS1 would be because you don't have the Soliton Radar working 100% from the start - which sucks, but that problem with visibility can be fixed by pressing up against walls, using binoculars, using first person, etc, to make your way to the terminal and download the radar for that area.
And the camera being really really shit at parts in MGS2.
And I haven't played the lower difficulties so I don't even know how the game would be on Normal, so you probably could be right.
All I can say is that the AI is near omniscient on Extreme and above in that game and I'm pretty sure you have more patrols to worry about but I'm not 100% on that.
The AI still has their cone vision one way or another, and like in MGS1 they don't hear you running by them unless it's a noisy surface. Plus, MGS2 introduced the need for enemies to radio in to trigger an alert. Numerous times in this successful Big Boss European Extreme run, the player's so deadset on speed he lets himself get spotted, and gets out of the area before the alert can trigger. The AI on Hard in Ground Zeroes is more nightmare-ish than this, and they're hampered by the open world nature of MGS5 in general.
My copy of the Legacy Collection shipped.
I am so hyped.

How much have you seen of the series may I ask? I'm curious as to how fresh you're going into the series.
Ground Zeroes , and up to Revolver Ocelot in MGS1 (I did beat him and watched the cutscene afterwards).
How does MGS 1 have a sharper learning curve than any of the other games that only added on and refined mechanics? You had more to worry about in MGS 2 onwards than you ever did in MGS 1.
Also want to question your whole dated presentation and writing comment (dated facts maybe...), but that's your opinion.
Majority of those who get exposed to the series through any of the later games first probably wouldn't even bother to stop back at MGS 1 because they'd think it's so goddamn boring by comparison.
MGS1 has a sharper learning curve compared to MGS3. It's made really obvious when you try playing them back-to-back.
In MGS1, you start with a minuscule health bar that only lets you take a couple hits before you die in an area full of guards with several ways to get discovered (splashing noises, wet footprints, not many hiding places). I just went back and tried it a little and got fucked up pretty quickly because I forgot about all the puddles and such. The next area is more open, but has search lights, snow footprints, loud metal flooring, and security cameras. And you haven't even gotten a weapon yet to defend yourself (with the one available in this area being very easy to miss).
In MGS3, you get characters carefully explaining everything you need to know right at the start and some guardless first areas that allow you to get the hang of things and test it out. You start with a weapon and the first guard encounters are very straightforward with lots of hiding places and alternate paths around them. It eases you into the game at a slower, more careful pace.
You have to think about this from the perspective of someone who doesn't play many 'hardcore' video games. MGS1 really relies on the player's 'game sense' to hop into the action and adapt to the immediate challenge. MGS3 gives you a nice, smooth introduction and it's a lot more forgiving to newcomers. The same also goes for the presentation. MGS3 is a very cinematic game, with mocapped actors and a well-written, interesting cast. MGS1 is a PSone game where the characters shake their heads to talk and have no eyes. The writing is dated. It's just not an easy game to get into, especially for a more casual player.
It's all just my opinion, though. I'm certainly not saying that everyone should start at MGS3. I just decided that it was a better option for an introduction to my girlfriend than the actual first game.
Question for you guys- do you think that The Legacy Collection will be ported to XB1/PS4/PC at some point? With all the remasters coming about for the later consoles, it wouldn't be surprising to see such an item appear. Plus, with MGSV also coming to those platforms, it would give a lot of people who want to play V also play the other games in the series. Personally I would welcome it as it would allow me to play MGS2 and other games that came to playstation consoles I never had.
I'm in a trapped situation. I don't own a ps2 or 3. All I have is a PC. MGS2 for PC won't work, I've tried many options, including the guides on forums. No Luck. So having the legacy collection would help. As I've beaten mgs1 on Emu. I don't think my PC can run PSCX2.

Legacy Collection? Probably not. MGS4 was built around the PS3's crazy architecture, which is why it hasn't been ported to anything else so far. MGS1 only exists on PS3 because of built-in compatibility with PSone games. I doubt they'd put the money into porting those two outside of PS3.
I could see the HD Collection (MGS2/MGS3/MGSPW) making its way to PC/current-gen, though. But who knows if they'll actually do it.

Unfortunately, owning a PS3 is a requirement for completing the series, because MGS4 never left the PS3. No matter what versions of the other games you manage to get, you still need a PS3 for MGS4.

Emulate or play the PC version.
PC version might need some patching though.

Kojima's reason for not porting MGS4 to the XBox 360 was that the filesize would be way too big and the game would need to be on 7 discs. He said himself that he might do it "on the next XBox console" for its own Legacy collection, so who knows.
I know this is super cliche, but my girlfriend had never heard of MGS and I was hoping to get her into it (so I could share my excitement about The Phantom Pain with her instead of separating my time between the two once the game comes out).
I suggested she play MGS3 (because if she ends up not liking the best game in the series, then this operation's a bust). She's extremely anxious about doing poorly at games in front of me, so she agreed on the condition that I help her through the game.
After a few days, we beat it together on Easy. Apparently, she really, really liked it. We had a lot of fun, and I've noticed she changed her Tumblr avatar to Big Boss and is reblogging MGS-related stuff. She told me she can't stop singing Snake Eater. Mission accomplished.
My girlfriends interest in MGS is like a student. She asks a million questions about the lore and the backstories of every character.
I've been weaning her towards it, getting her to play games I love and moving slowly towards it.
Soon. Soon we'll move towards MGS3.

She is both disgusted and fascinated by Quiet and just from trailers alone seems to like Ocelot and Kaz.

The PC version works ok, a controller might be necessary for full enjoyment. Read the PCGamimgWiki page for more info

emulation works fine, the only problem i had was some FPS issues in cutscenes (1080p emulation might not go easy on my computer) and the strut L sniping was kind of broken because the thermal goggles were just displaying a green screen (which was fixed by just pressing F6)

Why approach it with such caution? She already seems to be interested.
Finally finished Metal Gear Solid and who would've thought Snake was the inferior clone and Liquid was the superior?

[sp]And that there's a third Snake who's the president of the united states.[/sp]
I watched all the cutscenes from Portable Ops just now, and though the game was incredibly mediocre, the story had some neat stuff going for it. It explains where Big Boss get's his inspiration for Outer Heaven, and it does a better job of telling how Zero and Ocelot get their hands on the Philosophers legacy.
[sp]Robin Atkin Downes voices the first soldier you kidnap, which makes it very confusing when you know that Kaz appears in the next game.[/sp]

because I'm also terrified shes gonna end up being DSP about this
because I'm also terrified shes gonna end up being DSP about this
Unless your girlfriend has the IQ of a melon she probably won't.
I have often wondered if DSP is an act because there's just no way anyone can actually play video games like that.
The dude gets money for being bad at games. If it wasn't an act before it is now because he doesn't want to lose that money.
I'm replaying MGS1 for the first time in a long time. I never noticed the little call back at the start of Ground Zeroes. When Snake reaches the top of the lift at the very start of the game, and when BB climbs on top of the cliff the Colonel/Kaz says "Good work Snake, age hasn't slowed you down one bit."
That's a really nice call back, way better than how MGS4 did basically everything.

Let's Playing seems like a really good way to suck the enjoyment out of video games, you know? Like nearly all gamers I've tossed around the idea to try doing it but then I realized it's just so fake and soulless. I just wanna play games.

Streaming's the way to go.

Well I mean, he DID cheat death like, 3 times.

It's definitely lost its charm.
