Wow, it's fucking nothing.
I'd imagine there will be a more in-depth review in time. I hope.
There's a bunch more of them if you type MGSV in google and look on the news tab. I just posted the ones that was RT'd by Konami
So apparently a GameTrailers preview had them mention [sp]two of three playable areas are known so far.[/sp]
This is very important.
Back at Mother Base, I was still building an animal sanctuary (necessary to house all the wandering sheep and other creatures I kept bringing back) and trying to get an imprisoned, sun-bathing Quiet as a deployable buddy like D-Horse and Diamond Dog (the adorable wolf pup that grows into a super-scouting badass). She just sat in the cell, face down, top undone (got to watch those tan lines) listening to tunes from an eclectic, amusing soundtrack.

So apparently a GameTrailers preview had them mention [sp]two of three playable areas are known so far.[/sp]
[sp2]Afghanistan and Africa[/sp2]? Been known for quite a while.
[sp2]Iraq and Africa[/sp2]? Been known for quite a while.
It's more so the implication of [sp]an area that we don't know of yet, Camp Omega return potentiality aside.[/sp]
Acquittance of mine told me some (possibly) very bad things concerning MGS5. He was part of the press that was able to play MGS5 for 2 days and he returned VERY disappointed (he's a long time fan of the series) So here's the deal: (not sure if possible spoilers because it covers what is already seen on trailers but will hide just in case) [sp]After 2 days of gaming he only got to see 2-3 story related events. First part is the prolonged hospital scene (for about 1 hour) with nothing to do but stare at slowly crawling Snake Aside from what was shown in trailers it's very badly directed, overall story (seen so far) makes little sense and has neither taste nor proper atmosphere nor music Ocelot travels Snake to Afghanistan during Soviet intervention and gives mission "In three days rescue Miller". Sounds promising right? Well, sorry, no. Getting him out is easy as hell, after 20 minutes he's extracted, says those full of pathos lines from the trailer and bam "We need to resurrect Outer Heaven (I'm assuming he's talking about DD here) to get revenge BECAUSE." Mother Base needs to be rebuild just because. Go back to Afghanistan and collect points to advance the plot. Also Snake doesn't say anything, only listens to others, probably because Kiefer Sutherland cost too much. *He said now it's clear that Sutherland doesn't suit Snake as his voice, especially if he's not talking AT ALL. After short story sequence you get thrown into game and told: complete X number of redundant missions to advance the story such as "destroy 8 BTRs in 12 minutes". Wow. Then you get fed A VERY SMALL story part and it all starts anew. Remember those credits rolls after competing side-missions in MGSGZ? Well, brace yourselves, that shit is all over the place - even if you completed some dumb 'blow up radar antenna' mission that lasts 2 minutes. And no, you can't complete those side missions in a row, you need to complete your objective, call in extraction, see credits roll, see statistics, select new mission, repeat from step one to ad nauseum Strange thing is, game mechanics are very solid: you can disrupt communications, neutralize enemy reinforcements, etc. In-game AI reacts to your actions in very believable manner and still creates great in-game situations. ON THE OTHER HAND GAME DESIGN feels very clunky and not very thought-out. Example: when you bust out those kids with diamonds you can clear out whole base and call extraction right on your location. But they will ignore it because you're supposed to be under attack and they will 'dramatically' run across the map to the scripted extraction point. Except there's no one to attack you because you already made sure of that. Feel like UbiSoft game, and not in a good way. You cannot use your chopper as a fast travel - it's only for starting mission and finishing mission. You DO have fast travel though, you need to equip box in a cargo loading bay (*afaik every enemy base has them) and you get where you need. Open world feels empty, aside from enemies and small number of animals there's nothing - just a little better than Shadow of Mordor. No local civilians or anything of the sort. Stealth gameplay gets thrown out in about 5-6 hours of monotonous story-less missions of 'collect 6 mushrooms'. You get bored and as a result every side-mission turns into Micheal Bay movie - you call in artillery strike and everything gets blown to shit. After awhile you stop caring about losing helicopters, sometimes it's easier to lose 5 or 6 to complete mission faster and they are cheap enough to lose them in each mission. Explosions and chaos are pretty but IT'S. NOT. MGS. You get massive deja vu all the time - Just Cause, Far Cry 3-4, Assassin's Creed. It's engaging enough, sure but again, it doesn't feel like MGS, it feels like some bad parody with elements copied from UbiSoft games. Other elements are basically the same as in Peace Walker, base management, etc so no need to talk about it. There ARE some unexpectedly good segments, like for instance to understand what Soviet soldiers are saying (and they talk in proper Russian, no that COD nonsence) you need to capture someone who knows English and after that their speech gets subtitled (not a problem for people who knows Russian ofc) If you try to interrogate someone without it all you'll get "Ai dont spik inglesh!" and no info, because, duh, they cannot understand what you want from them. Partner system too, you know, about Quiet and DD and your horse. Quiet can be killed (permanently) and if you didn't pick up a puppy DD, well, he's lost forever too. They are 'upgradeable': for example DD, if trained sufficiently, can kill enemies with a knife. To sum it up: situation is very strange and unclear. Phantom Pain (as of now) looks like a bunch of cliches taken from other open-world games and their own interesting ideas that are hastily stitched together and, to some degree, are playable but no full picture can come out from all this. We have a military openworld with constantly reused locations, strange thing resembling a mobile game and a very 'fifth wheel-like' story that's barely connected to the game. There's very little that's original and can be called MGS, in a way we got 'yet another' open world game (of which there's already tons) but lost MGS.. There is hope that all this is a overdrawn prologue and as soon this unnaturally attached openworld will end we will get linear story-line driven MGS at last. But there's also another option: Maybe Hideo Kojima got game mechanics in place but asked more time for everything else hence conflict with Konami. It would be a shame to see legendary series go out this way. P.S. They finished around 20 missions, which is (as testers said) is about 40% of the game P.P.S. People unfamiliar with the series like current build very much. That's actually a third option, because americans are obsessed with openworld games and in-game collectionables MGSV may be intentionally designed that way to get in the trend.[/sp] *how do you make 'blurry text'?
It's more so the implication of [sp]an area that we don't know of yet, Camp Omega return potentiality aside.[/sp]
Camp Omega was already confirmed to return
I'm pretty sure nobody was expecting a linear storyline when it was announced it was open world.

The [sp2]collecting mushrooms[/sp2] sounds more like a side-objective during a side-op. And your friend sounds extremely cynical about it all, which is understandable in this case but a lot of that is basically comparing it to other games of open world genre and then complaining that it's not MGS.

If it's not then, fuck.
TW3 has a very solid story and remains open world. The spoilers echo my own fears of Kojima taking too much from Peace Walker and treating this as open world. Too much focus on "its like TV" and "we want people to speedrun and compare scores" over story. 2 minute missions then credits and score is going to get old fast.

Which worries me too, because side-ops are fine but making clearing them mandatory to advance through the story is, frankly, a little too much. Well, I'm preparing myself for the worst. That way on 1st of September I can either be pleasantly surprised or at least have an option of saying 'I knew it'.

None of the kind of stuff your friend talks about is mentioned in ANY of the reviews, with pretty much all of the reviewers drooling for more. I'm not saying the issues don't exist, but I'm doubting that they're as big as an issue as your seemingly cynical friend is making out.
[sp2]Iraq and Africa[/sp2]? Been known for quite a while.
Uhhhh you mean [sp2]Afghanistan.[/sp2]

But even as a total newbie I'd notice the idiotic credits rolling every few minutes.
Honestly to me it sounds more like a series of disconnected parts of the game all spliced together and dumbed down to give a feel for how individual little elements will work and play.
You guys are freaking me out with all these spoiler tags for things that aren't even spoilers. Yes, we know the game takes place in Afghanistan, that's not a spoiler. Anything you can see in a trailer, or gameplay presentation, is not a spoiler.
Well, metal gear general over at /vg/ caught that post up there and went into another brief shitstorm about how the person playing probably is DSP tier and sucks at video games and so forth, among other things like how he's bullshitting about game percentage and the like v:v:v

People over at the MGSForums are having conniptions because people keep posting things from IGN and Gameinformer and not putting spoiler tags over them, even though most of the information is like a year old.
Not exactly new-new and a few of them are from the magazines, but have a handful of new screenshots.
TBH I'm doubting your friend because in those press events they said they only had like 8% of the game done.
TBH I'm doubting your friend because in those press events they said they only had like 8% of the game done.
Well, shit, I'm selling it for what I've bought it. TBH I'll be very glad if he's totally wrong.
TBH I'm doubting your friend because in those press events they said they only had like 8% of the game done.
There is a very similar thread in the mgs subreddit from a dude from russia who is apparently a well known fan of the mgs series who also brought up some points that his 'friend' did. So yeah, idk if he was just quoting that story or what.
