Whether you're sarcastic or not, the game even tried to pretend he was Snake for all of 5 minutes, and a few more after that like he wasn't the pretty boy he is until the rug's pulled out from beneath the player. He's pretty much the sole exception in the series but still takes after Big Boss in a few ways, and this was entirely intended to subvert player expectations.
For all we know, MGS2 is probably the reason why we've always been Snake with various thematic titles or codenames no matter where we are in the timeline.

MGS2 is the exact reason. People flipped shit when they found they weren't playing as Snake, and lots of people judged the game solely on that, without looking at the really good things in the game. Kojima's been scared shitless that it'll happen again, so he keeps running away from the fact that "Naked Snake" has to be Big Boss at some point. It's the same reason Big Boss acts, looks, and sounds (well, initially) the same as Solid Snake.

Naked Snake/Big Boss looking and acting just like Solid Snake did bother me for years, but recently after watching a marathon livestream go through just about every codec call possible and re-reviewing the plot, I realized the factors are only superficial, a sort of surface gloss to re-attract stifled fans back to the series. He certainly was a different character, even if it was somewhat understated, and with Peace Walker he came into his own legacy entirely at least. It's sort of a weird appeasement, and I feel sorry for Kojima about the whole mess - and some people still give him shit over Solid 2 to this day.
I like MGS2 era raiden non ironically
I understand why people hate him and his voice acting is annoying in 2 but I think he's a fun deconstruction of hero worship and video game players themselves
I get that Raiden is taking the piss out of me but I still like him, you know? He's just a normal guy thrusted into the insanity of MGS2 and everryone hates him for messing up in situations any normal guy would mess up in
[editline]26th January 2015[/editline]
MGS2 and Raiden being hated on launch is the biggest crime to Metal Gear
It's hillarious even 14 years later we still get people hating on Raiden for not bieng Solid Snake
Speaking of Raiden, he was a pretty shitty character in MGS4. I imagine Kojipro were thinking: "how can we manage to shoehorn this character that everybody hates into this game and make people like him? wait i got it, we'll put him in a cyborg body and make him do cuh-razy flips and have him kill like 15 gecko!! we aren't actually going to give him a likable personality or anything!"
It's bad enough that he doesn't really do jack shit throughout the entire game, but when he appears he just sounds like an edgy asshole because his retarded ass got caught by The Patriots. Surprisingly I actually find him less tolerable than "now you're just being nasty huehuehuehue" Raiden in Rising.

To be fair, Raiden in Rising is entertaingly over the top hammy. And its all the better for it.
realraidentalk for a sec tho that gecko cutscene was cool as h*ck

to be fair though snake was still basically doing the video game offscreen for the entirety of mgs2
My copy of the Legacy Collection arrived today, Otacon just finished with his "science because animes" speech. Where hasbthis series been my entire life.

When he did a handstand and swung them around with his legs? I thought it was lame as shit, it was the kind of dumb action sequence I'd think up when I was 5. I'm partly glad he spent most of MGS4 whining from his couch because at least he was out of the way.

Hiding in plain sight underneath a cardboard box.

Now you're just being nasty.

Also TPP needs to have more Elbow drops, this is just disappointing

Edgy Raiden > whiny white boi Raiden
Raiden probably had the hardest life out of anybody in the series.
Can you imagine living with Rose?
This time I'm making sure to save after beating Sniper Wolf. :v:

"WE 6:0F PS"?
what's the joke?
"WE 6:0F PS"?

6:0F PS
6 0FPS
60 FPS
Not too surprising for the Fox Engine, but it's good to say
One thing I hope about TPP is within the story [sp]after saving miller[/sp] Big Boss and Ocelot are goofing off doing bro stuff while Miller is all serious and pissy [sp]with his missing limbs.[/sp]
Just imagine some important battle plan meeting on mother base and BB and Ocelot are just playing footsies under the table giggling at each other.
This sounds like the kind of shit that would be in secret theater.
Man, we need another one of those. Just imagine how much more ridiculous it would be with all these high-def production values.
I know you guys probably get this question a lot, buuuuuuut...
What order should you play it in for the story?
I've got Ground Zeroes and the HD Collection, also got a PS2 and my sister has a PS Vita which can run PSP games iirc.

you know that book series that you start at 3, and then go to 6, and then go to 2, then 1?
No?
you start at 1 dude
a lot of people will say 3 but the games flow better in release order, the gameplay will improve over time and they'll get more detailed
I can't say for sure since I started at 1 but I feel going to 3 first and having to adjust would be rough
Pretty much the answer you're going to get from here is release order.
Edit: what the, that post up there wasn't there when I refreshed

It fit in Rising. Despite me not being able to stand him even in Rising the rest of MGR cast made up for it.
MGS4 he was literally a deus ex machina and was useless. Every single scenario he showed up in could have been avoided in a simpler way with absolutely minor changes to the script.
Just finished MGS1, played for nearly 12 hours straight. Haven't been this engrossed in a game for a looooooooong time. Like, recently i've been having trouble playing games, id generally quit when I die once and shit like that (save for online napoleonic wars). I just felt bored, but MGS was a completely different story. Can't wait to play the rest of the games.
Luckily i have no classes today because of the snow, otherwise I'd be fucked by staying up until 5 :v:
If anyone is wondwring what my stats we
Game Level - Normal
Play Time - 11:42:23 (plus the roughly 20 i lost after dying to Ocelot's torture, hadn't saved in a while)
Save - 35 times
Continue - 99 times
Being Found - 44 times
Enemies - 105 killed
Rations - 115 used
Codename: Hyena
Special Items: Stealth
Maybe I'm biased having played MGS3 first and only seen full playthroughs of the MGS games following it, but he's an amazing character in itself. If anything, MGS3 probably created a schism in fans of the series between those who liked Solid Snake best, and those who liked the guy he was a clone of.

I get the feeling Kojima had already started drafting MG:Rising's shape when 4 was released. Raiden's placement in MGS4 was probably advertisement and market testing more than anything else. "Hey, remember the guy you hated playing as in MGS2? Do you like him better this way?" And you know, people did.

kojima was only executive producer on MGS Rising
