bump
Is MTG that boring and unpopular? We should start a discussion. Anybody got any ideas?
Could discuss cockatrice and possibly play against each other on it.
I'd be well up for playing online with other people but every time I look at this thread its dead
[editline]18th August 2013[/editline]
perhaps we need a new thread with more information and a link to download cockatrice
I just got 2nd place in a FNM booster draft, lost only to the card shop owner. Game is hard, but the grand prix is going to happen near where I live this week so I'm going to see if I can go to that. I'll tell you guys how it goes.
Lands:
3 Boros Guildgate
2 Orzhov Guildgate
2 Selesnya Guildgate
8 Plains
8 Swamp
23 Lands
Creatures:
4 Boros Elite
3 Frontline Medic
3 Sunspire Gatekeepers
3 Soulmender
2 Smelt-Ward Gatekeepers
2 Undercity Informer
2 Vizkopa Guildmage
3 Master of Diversion
2 Xathrid Necromancer
3 Banisher Priest
4 Basilica Screecher
31 Creatures
Other Spells:
1 Ready // Willing
1 Toil // Trouble
2 Riot Control
2 Lyev Decree
2 Planar Cleansing
2 Rise of the Dark Realms
4 Duress
14 Other Spells
Any deck advice? It's a semi-fast paced human brigade deck, in the event of the match drawing out too long, I have the ability to kill everything and then bring back all the graveyards under my control as a sort of finishing, "fuck you" sort of thing.

i'd be hesitant to describe a deck with 23 lands as fast paced
Could discuss cockatrice and possibly play against each other on it.
I'm a novice at MTG so I really don't know what Cockatrice is? Can anybody introduce it to me?
i'd be hesitant to describe a deck with 23 lands as fast paced
semi-fast. More like moderate really, but I have a lot of 1 drop cards. I was always told about a third of the deck should be lands so you don't draw a landless hand and get fucked.
I wouldn't say it's so much the 23 lands as the amount of guildgates. They're fine, but they don't exactly contribute to speed.

It's a free program to play magic online, I don't know where else to get it
I'm clueless on thread takeovers but if i make a new thread with some more information on it will everyone jump ship? or will i just be banned?

How about this for a start. I've put together a rough group on steam, my hope is we can meet on it and organise games from there. If it kicks off at all I'll add events and stuff to it.
Steam Group
Also we all need to get Cockatrice
I suggest you download the entire card database when installing; it hardly takes any time anyway.
After that upload your deck, save and your set to play
I'll let you know how the whole thing works as I learn how to use Cockatrice.
why doesn't anyone use magic workstation i seem to remember comparing the two awhile ago and finding it superior

Rise of the Dark realms is too high of a mana cost in standard, so i'd recommend losing it. Your deck relies too much on creatures, so going up against a control deck would mean that your field gets wiped a lot.

let's do some online drafts
with non-standard packs

For some reason I couldn't find the group, so I added you. I have the same profile pic as fp on steam and pls accept so I can join dat group.
Just got my first set in my life. I've always been interested in playing the game but I just don't have a lot of friends who play and I don't really know places that have regular games.

Ok I'll see if I get time to make one, if not and this steam group takes over that entire but you quoted could probably be chucked in with minor editing.

Google your local area and Friday Night Magic and you should see groups appear. This is part of the reason why I want to get some online play started.

I'll have a look into it, if its a better GUI I'll swap to it.
Checked, unless we all want to fork out £25 were sticking with Cockatrice I think
[editline]20th August 2013[/editline]
Right I've Improved the Steam group a bit and put some more information on using cockatrice on there, let me know if you think it needs more or see some error.
Also OP could you link the Steam group to the OP It only needs a little explanation as all the info on joining is on the group.
Finally decided to give MTG a shot.
My friend gave me a thousand cards or so, anyone have any suggestions as far as building a first deck? Originally I thought I'd just do a single color but saw online that two is recommended. Think I want to try a blue/red deck unless that's a shit idea.

other combos besides blue/red might work out better, that combo didn't get any love until the last few years, and you probably don't have the ridiculous broken shit like ponder to pad it with
i don't want to give you the idea that it's a shit idea, it's just far more of a challenge than putting together a competent red green deck or whatever

I'll just do a red green deck then, I should have probably waited before taking an hour to sift through all my blues.

Its always good to know what cards you have and to have them properly organised. Depending on what block your cards are from blue black can be a killer.
I'll just do a red green deck then, I should have probably waited before taking an hour to sift through all my blues.
if you're just getting into it and haven't gotten a billion lectures already, here are some tips; the bread and butter of your deck should be cheap, 1-3 mana (unless you have a ton of mana acceleration but uh) and any cards that cost more than that should give you card advantage, meaning it has more than one effect, or replaces cards in your hand, or gives you more than one creature. i could go on but i am probably not the best player here and someone else is like 'that's not how my deck works!!' but i'm just saying if you're taking a swing at magic and playing red/green, those are some pretty safe tips
For red green, you generally want your red spells to be burns, or at the very least weenies that you can buff up and punish the enemy rather than having a large power (leave that to the green side of the deck). For green, if you aren't ramping or mana accelerating, then you want to go for medium to big creatures, or cards to buff up your weenies such as giant growth (or similar), rancor and aiming for bloodrush.
Burning Tree Emissary is your new best friend.
remember when cascade was in standard

Why not use woogerworks for playing on a cockatrice server?
Also if anyone ever plays, I usually play modern and EDH over cockatrice. Add me on Steam if you're ever interested in playing.

If you ever wondered why a stranger added you, it's me. Same profile pic as Facepunch.
Does anybody have any good, relatively competitive, post rotation, cheap-ish decks for a starter? I have a starter deck but my friends dunk me with their stronger decks. Don't want to go down the same path i went with YGO, so budget would be nice. My favourite colours are Green, black and blue. Thanks
