Interesting point. Though for some reason this game invested me more than TWD.
Don't get me wrong that game made me cry too...but TLOU gut punched me more frequently. TWD hit hardest for me only at it's ending (that said...I was depressed for a week after the last act of that game).
As an aside: thank you for giving valid reasoning by the way. I've seen so many shit posts all over the web for this game as of late I was fully expecting the first person to quote me saying something...well..shit. I'd say you have a soul.
Being polite on the Internet feels good. Better than "no ur opiniun iz wr0ng im da allknowin kid lal" We got everything we need to be polite.
Anyway, you're right, TWD was a long build up for the ending while TLoU was tense all the way through.
yup, took me a good 15 hours to beat on hard
Let's all be friends.
Aw man this game is long (for me at least). Either that or I'm just enjoying this game so damn much it feels like it's long. When I thought I was at the end [sp]with the mirror building[/sp] it just continued on.
You are at the best part of the game after that.
I finished the last of us. Just like Bioshock Infinite though the story was great but it really did suffer from some gameplay issues. Most notably the bullet-sponge effect just like Bioshock had. Where human beings sustain unreasonable amounts of damage and still fight you. In a game like The Last of Us where resourcefulness and realism is stressed it's completely immersion breaking. Probably done to make the game artificially more difficult (which is unnecessary)
Not to mention I played on Easy. I can only imagine what kind of nightmare it would be on harder difficulty. I had an issue where enemy AI didn't actually accept incoming fire as a threat. Both in practical application like supressing fire where they ignore large volumes of fire at them and continue to stand exposed and shoot at me with precision accuracy in as casual a manner as possible.
And from a design point of view
A) Even when I hit enemies with effective fire they will still shoot at me and land hits. For example I emptied about 20 rounds of 5.56 into a guys face and his character model bucked upwards from the impact but even so continued to shoot me and land hits whilst my 20 round burst didn't put him down which leads to the next issue:
B) That lazy character design/mechanics are excuses for unreasonable damage thresholds. Because a character is wearing a helmet for example means that he can take 20 rounds of 5.56 to the face and will not die, his helmet will pop off. I understand that may be reasonable if I shoot him in the head with one shot from a bad angle and that'd be cool but regardless where the hit is it'll absorb the damage. This can be kind of overlooked when using most weapons but near the end when I finally got an automatic rifle I found myself shooting an entire mag into a guy's head and only his helmet pops off, than he shoots me back without any issues.
Not only is the helmet an excuse, but so is "body armor" apparently crossdraw vests with MOLLE webbing are considered bullet proof because..? I don't know. But they seem to think that the shit they put on their character models have plates or kevlar in them which they don't every single vest they wear has a real-world counterpart and they are just rigs to hold pouches. And even if we go as far as to assume they modified them after the fact it's still disproportional protection from the amount of damage they can withstand.
And I suppose you can use the excuse of "oh well you should of used stealth lol" but you're fucking dumb because the game was designed to be approached from different angles so I can go stealth, go combat or do a little of both. I found that when I tried stealth the level design was in such a way that no matter what they'd discover you eventually or you were forced into combat. Like I was able to sneak past two or three guys and got to the door without them noticing. There was a triangle over the door, and it was grayed out which meant I couldn't open it. Than I killed the three guys and the triangle was colored and it let me pass. Which means no matter what my intention I had to kill these fucks.
It also seems to think that "Stealth" gameplay means sneaking behind and stabbing every, single, enemy in the level instead of just picking and choosing targets to get to the end or avoiding conflict all together because I kept finding points where I snuck past people and I was all like "Oh, good job." than the door was locked until I killed all the enemies I had snuck past.

The overall storyline I felt was cliche but I LOVED the characters, the interaction, the graphics and scenery. I appreciated the scavenging, crafting and aspects of the combat system. In the end I found myself wanting to finish just to see how the characters were going to react and what they were going to do, not because I give a fuck about the actual plot point.
[editline]27th June 2013[/editline]
And probably important to note the bullet-sponge effect was with all enemies, the "armored" ones more so but so many times I've point-blank shot buckshot into someones stomach and they just step backwards and than resume shooting and running around like nothing is wrong.
it only took two hits to kill anything for me lol 1 with buckshot
i played on normal
except for the fking bloater
Stuff that doesn't sound like it's describing TLoU.
Are you sure you played the same game as I did? I've finished it multiple times and never had any of the problems you describe.
Even when playing on survivor, nearly everything goes down with one or two headshots, usually three when I hit the body. I don't think I ever had 20 rounds to empty, honestly.
Furthermore, where stealth was a possibility, there were no locked doors that forced me to kill everyone in the area before I could carry on.
In case of unintentional spoilers I'm skipping the block of text but I didn't really notice the bullet sponge. I usually aimed for headshots but usually 3 body shots or so with the weak pistols was enough to take someone down if I couldn't get a headshot off. Shotguns took one at closer ranges and rifle 2.
Furthermore, where stealth was a possibility, there were no locked doors that forced me to kill everyone in the area before I could carry on.
I remember a few instances early in the game where I couldn't progress until I cleared the area but other than that I honestly don't remember having to clear out an entire area later in the game.
It took you 20 rounds to kill a guy? What did you miss 15? I've played the game on easy, hard, and survivor and I can tell you the only enemy able to take more than 7 rounds was a bloater. There's also only a couple of sections in the game where you can't just sneak through. And no, the game does not have to let you play how you want, if you don't sneak it will punish you.
Seems like you just suck at the game to be honest, I haven't seen anyone have your problems before.
Not to mention people keep saying that the difficulty only changes the amount of resources you get, so higher difficulty doesn't make the enemies stronger.
I'm starting to think he played Uncharted 1 and forgot it wasn't the Last of Us. Now that's a bulletspongey game.
*snip*
Sorry man, I gotta agree with the others; I never encountered those problems and I played on Hard/Normal for my first playthrough. Save for Bloaters (or Clickers if I didn't land a good headshot), every enemy went down with 1-3 shots no problem. The helmets felt a little "gamey" I'll admit, but I still managed to knock those off with one shot from the revolver.
Other than that, I had no problem suppressing enemies, and rare were the encounters where I was forced into direct combat as opposed to stealth. And as far as stealth goes...I mean yeah, you CAN approach encounters however you want...but that doesn't mean it's a good idea. Last of Us is a stealth game roughly in the vein of Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory; sure, you CAN go in guns blazing but that doesn't mean it's the right way of going about it. Matter of fact, if you do that on any difficulty other than easy or normal, you're going to find yourself dead more often than not.
Contrary to the marketing, The Last of Us is primarily a stealth game, pure and simple. Hell, at some point I'm going to try a playthrough where I go through the game killing as few people/infected as possible. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if I could knock it down to ~100 or less as opposed to the 500 I killed on my first run.

Fuck, I remember shooting a guy with a shotgun 4 times in the chest before he would fucking die.
In this game, 1 and his head, left arm and right leg explodes in gory chunks of meat.
Finished the game on Normal (Since I don't play many console games anymore and I have terrible aim) and somehow I managed to get over 70% accuracy throughout the whole game. I'm almost proud of myself.
There actually seems to be some slight aim assist in this game but you can't turn it off.
Anybody know if this is available anywhere in full wallpaper scale?

It's 1920x1080 but it's a screenshot from the documentary so it's not the whole picture.
All of a sudden I suck dick at multilayer, now have more hungry people than healthy people. I even had a good round where our team won but I still didn't get enough food.
I finished the last of us. -snip-
Wow, you're definitely doing it wrong...
I finished this game yesterday. Definitely my favorite game I have played in a very long time.
I got the misty eyes so many times.
God damn, Naughty Dog is now one of my favorite devs.
I just began [sp]Winter section...I somehow knew I'll be playing as Ellie since begining when you play as Sarah.. so far it's great game, for me even better than Uncharted series[/sp]
Playing on Hard for my first playthrough and damn [sp]Those sewers, at the end when you are defending in that last room I had like one piece of Hp, molotov and 3 bullets for revolver, that was really hard[/sp]

Wait till you play on survival difficulty. [sp]All I had was a bat and had to run around till Henry killed the all of the infected. For some reason Ellie didn't give me ammo.[/sp]
What I really liked was at the end when [sp]you carry Ellie through the hospital. How it was almost just like the beginning of the game, where you carry Sarah. Hell, the end has more parallels than that! The last, last segment, where you play as Ellie, made it full circle, ending the game as it began. I was actually afraid during the hospital run that Ellie would get hit since that is what happened to Sarah[/sp]
[sp]Man, I fucking love this game[/sp]
Wall of text
Essentially: says the gameplay is definitively bad because of a mix between quite literally playing it wrong (survival horror/stealth mix where you aren't supposed to shoot all teh d00ds), and because it doesn't follow some arbitrary constraints you assumed the game should have (it's not tacticool enough in that it doesn't revolve around my ~superior~ knowledge of gun types and body armor specifications to a tee~~)
You are right, it does remind me a lot of bioshock infinite. Another genuinely excellent game that some spergaloids said was DEFINITELY bad because it didn't revolve around their false projecting of how a bioshock game "should" play like
i wanna start a new game but my friend has a game already on here, if i start one does it overwrite his?
i wanna start a new game but my friend has a game already on here, if i start one does it overwrite his?
You get to make a new save file, I have a few for different difficulties.
just finished the game and while i thought the ending was less intense than other parts, it was still baller.
[sp]my "favorite" parts had to be when sam turned zombie and henry shot himself and when ellie fucked david up in the resturant. i gained so much for respect for her by that time because Joel wanted her to be an useless tag-along in the beginning.[/sp]
i don't think i'm going to play through it again because the most appealing part was the story. maybe i'll pick it up a few years later. i was planning on trading it in for credit towards GTA but it became one of those games with too much sentimental value to it. is the multiplayer worth playing and does anyone know if DLC is planned?
[editline]28th June 2013[/editline]
also i love how Joel was a stone cold bastard who wasn't afraid to execute people. i'm glad they didn't decide to go with a dudley-do-right as a protagonist
Bought the game today.
Damn does this game start of well.
Can't wait to finish it, this has hyped me up.

There's a season pass. iirc 1 Story DLC and 2 Multiplayer DLCs
Why does the game punish you if the host loses connection?
"Oh looks like the round can't be finished because someone's connection got lost. Let's kill off the population of everyone that was in the match, despite them having nothing to do with it!!"
