[sp]Not to mention, since he's as messed up as he is, it's probably only a matter of time before he relapses and starts to hunger for souls. Whereas a slightly happier ending would involve Flowey getting a soul-substitute (or even his original soul, if shenanigans ensue with time travel and a determined young kid), becoming Asriel once more, and coming to terms with all that he's done.[/sp]

Stay detemmiened.
I convinced my girlfriend to play undertale
She apparently believed flowey about the love bellets, and didn't pay attention to what he said. So she went 10 minutes thinking she was supposed to let all enemies hit her. she died to a butterfly and quit the game, now she won't play it again.
This is not an inexperienced gamer, she racks up as many hours as me on steam.

That's some dedicated obliviousness to listen to a Tutorial encounter and then immediately forget what's happening not even 2 seconds later and then continue to ignore what's happening as he attempts a drawn-out kill sequence as he laughs in your face. Especially so because you have to manually press buttons in order to advance the conversation. The first encounter that can actually act as a threat is a Froggit after Toriel leaves you alone, which deals 4 damage. This means she had to get hit five times without realizing that she's losing health. And due to the way that invulnerability works, that means she had to do that across at least two attack cycles without realizing that she's losing health despite the loud hurt sound effects and the healthbar dropping lower. And judging by what you stated, she not only finished the encounter with Froggit, but also did the same song and dance with a Whimsun. Hell, the game even tells you before you even name the fallen human what the lose conditions of the game are. Despite how easy it is to piece together that dropping to 0 hit points means you fail, the game went out of its way to make sure you'd know.
There's a point where misunderstandings of game mechanics can be tolerated, but this is beyond that point.

I'm going to make some lame video game analogies/sperg thoughts to explain my viewpoint.
[sp]Asriel is the main character of Undertale, not Frisk. The prophecy and the Delta rune all refer to Asriel. Asriel comes from a royal family, and in any case of royalty there is always a looming thought of duty or responsibility towards the future of your people, and this is what makes Asriel the protagonist. Frisk can be seen either as an adventurer trying to help people or an unfortunate kid trying to go home, but either way they can't save the underground (Frisk either escapes on their own through a plothole I mentioned earlier or gets Asriel to do it).[/sp]
[sp]UT pulls a MGS because you don't play as the main character of the game's plot. The MGS series was never about Solid Snake, it was about Big Boss and the shit he went through that led him to developing the Patriots and whatnot. Solid Snake just lived in the world Big Boss constructed. Everything Frisk experiences is a result of Asriel's actions: Toriel running away to save and shelter humans, Asgore reluctantly killing children for the sake of his kingdom, Alphys conducting the experiments so Asgore won't have to kill anyone anymore, ect.[/sp]
[sp]Asriel did the best he could after he realized Chara was fucked up, but he became Flowey following the impact of his death. All the shit he did as Flowey was him trying to get people to save him. His friendship timelines were him trying to find a happy ending so he could feel compassion but to no avail. His murder timelines were to see if he could get someone to put him out of his misery (Kill or BE Killed), since every time he tried to kill himself he pussied out and reset. Even if someone could kill him, he still reset since no one had greater determination than he did. He stops resetting less because he got bored and more of he realized he's just doomed to an eternity of suffering and he longs for the Bluepill when he and Chara were together.[/sp]
Related, check the lyrics
[sp]Frisk coming along just allowed Asriel to continue his storyline since he couldn't reset anymore and Frisk got Asgore to pull out the human Souls. The pacifist run let Asriel get the monster souls, and he was able to feel compassion again not because of the human + monster souls, but because he could sense how everyone in the underground felt about Frisk. At this point he realizes how he fucked up everything and, once again, just does the best he can do by destroying the barrier and accepting his fate. Even if you go back to the ruins he just begs you to forget about him because he's a little goat bitch and doesn't want people to remember the shit he went through. He wants his storyline to end since he believes he isn't worthy of redemption and Frisk deserves a happy blue pill life with their monster friends.[/sp]
Also related, lyrics very relevant
[sp]The issue is that Asriel has no closure. He's not dead, which would be a sad but complete ending. He's not alive, but he has changed because of Frisk. He's forcing himself to atone for his sins while everyone else is living a happy new life above ground. Asriel won't be forgotten by Frisk because Frisk is still dealing with the effects of his death even on the surface. So now Asriel fucked up again by forcing Frisk to take the blue pill.[/sp]
[sp]The only way to save Asriel at this point is for Frisk to give him a soul. I think its bs that you recreate the world you destroyed by selling your soul to Chara, but not permanently locking yourself out of the game by gifting your soul to Asriel and forcing Asriel to go on.[/sp]
TL;DR [sp]Chara a shit, Goatchild did nothing wrong toby bls let me save him[/sp]
TL;DR [sp]Chara a shit, Goatchild did nothing wrong toby bls let me save him[/sp]
[sp]I feel the same damn way. As do a ton of us since there's plenty of fanart and fanfic where Asriel does indeed get saved. For me, I could see it happening in one of two ways, two different "paths" if you will.[/sp]
[sp]There'd be the "Alphys Path", where Frisk manages to convince Alphys to keep working on the science of souls, culminating in her creating an artificial monster soul to enable Flowey to regain their compassion and move on with themselves. And then there's the "Sans Path", where through dogged persistence and a vow to never reset again, Frisk convinces Sans to toy with time manipulation, culminating in Frisk being flung back into the distant past, grabbing the soul of the original Asriel just after they crumbled to dust, and reuniting Flowey with his old soul, allowing both the new Asriel AND the original to coexist and live happily together. (or alternatively, cause both of them to freak out and have a nervous breakdown, THEN try to live a regular childhood)[/sp]
[sp]With that in mind, I don't think the "give Asriel your soul" thing would actually work as imagined, since humans souls "don't need compassion in order to exist", so while they would grant Flowey power (and we know what happened with THAT), they wouldn't give him the heart he truly needs. Which is a pity since I do kinda like the Dreemurr Reborn blog.[/sp] (speaking of which, apparently the [sp]Dreemurr Reborn[/sp] stuff is on an elongated hiatus on account of a fried hard drive)
[sp]He's forcing himself to atone for his sins while everyone else is living a happy new life above ground.[/sp]
[sp]I think this is one of the things that bothers me most about the ending. How is he atoning for sins by hiding from everyone he's wronged? You don't atone from your sins by running from them, you gotta face 'em. Deep down I'm sure that Asriel chose to stay behind because he's too afraid to face the people he's killed over and over in an endlessly looping timeline. Which makes sense. Hell knows I would be. The notion that he stays behind because "it would be better for everyone"- which I disagree with- is just as much his shield to hide himself from the truth he can't accept as it is it's own argument. In this way, we never get proper closure on his character, and it bothers me.[/sp]

To be frank, with Toby at the helm of this game, I can't see this happening, even if it was possible. Too much sweet, not nearly enough bitter. [sp]There's not way Toby would let us get Asriel off the hook without sacrificing something very dear and valuable to us.[/sp]
