How did you all discover Undertale? I'd only heard about it until Joel from Vinesauce played it, but I only watched him do the very first part with flowey, then at that point I decided I wanted to play the game myself.
I can't remember, I think I saw a few posts on Tumblr with some new characters I didn't recognize, then I watched the first half of the Giantbomb quick look. After that I bought it and played it.
I was sent this image once and it was my first exposure to the game. I thought it was gonna be a really tryhard game with the meta stuff like a shitty Spec Ops: The Line or something. Clearly I was wrong. Didn't go in totally blind though. [sp]I knew, for instance, all about Flowey being the bad guy. I was caught off guard though when he played his hand in the first few minutes when I thought it was going to be the big reveal plot twist at the end.[/sp]
honestly I saw that picture and "anime is real, anime is not real" and just bought the game :v: [editline]26th January 2016[/editline] ended up pretty much going through the whole thing blind (except I had to look up the piano puzzle because tone deafness)
My expectations going into Undertale were pretty good, and it lived up to the hype, but I wasn't brought to tears.
i saw payrus' trash can quote before i knew anything about the game i don't know why but i thought that he was some form of antagonist character doom has made me think of skeletons as nothing but agitation then undertale happened and now i'm confused
When I saw the trashcan picture, I didn't see Papyrus in it just the talking head so I thought he was a narrator or something. The fact that like half the people on facepunch started to undertale-ify their avatars was a pretty good sign that it was a quality product.
I wouldn't have played this game if it wasn't gifted to me over Christmas.
Some guy I was subbed to on Youtube uploaded a full No Mercy run of the game pretty close to when the game came out. I thought it looked like another typical shitty indie game just by looking at the thumbnail. But I watched it anyway. I skipped around the video a few times, ending up at Mettaton's final fight and Asgore's fight. I thought Death by Glamour was pretty good, and I thought ASGORE (the song) was fucking amazing. I then bought the game entirely for the soundtrack. A week later, I thought that I should probably play it.

I just saw a gif of the first time you meet Flowey, where the player chose to avoid the pellets. Back then it was still in development, but I tried the demo and was sold. I sort of wish I never played the demo, though. It made me know that I can go through the whole game without killing anyone.

I saw a bunch of tweets about it when it launched, and then tried the demo. Bought the game shortly after.
It made me know that I can go through the whole game without killing anyone.
I don't think this is a big spoiler, especially when the tagline on the steam page is "UNDERTALE! The RPG game where you don't have to destroy anyone."
How did you all discover Undertale? I'd only heard about it until Joel from Vinesauce played it, but I only watched him do the very first part with flowey, then at that point I decided I wanted to play the game myself.
My friend wanted it for his birthday. When I first saw it on the steam page when buying it for him, I thought it looked stupid as hell until I watched the trailer and tried the demo.
I feel there's alot more geno fanart than pacifist fanart
I watched game grumps and bought it right away after ross advised to do so in the first episode.
I don't think this is a big spoiler, especially when the tagline on the steam page is "UNDERTALE! The RPG game where you don't have to destroy anyone."
Maybe not, but when I first played the demo I killed a few monsters and ended up "accidentally" killing Toriel because I didn't want to play by the rules. I think if I played through the whole game like that my experience would have been better overall. On the other hand, Flowey's little speech when I went back and spared Toriel sealed the deal for me.
My friend made me listen to a couple of songs from the OST, and I fell in love with the soundtrack so I bought it. After listening to a few more songs including Bonetrousle, my friend told me not to keep listening if I intended to buy the game because of spoilers, and told me that it'd be worth it. So in essence I bought the game solely from the quality of the soundtrack. Best buy 2015.
Being a huge Homestuck fan, I got interested in Radiation's shenanigans. Ended up finding my favourite game of all times.

It used to be so fun posting in the "would you fuck the above user's avatar" thread.
first exposure to it was in DAAS, unfortunately :v:
You poor soul
My exposure was being told to go get the game for a few weeks before actually getting it. Never saw any art or videos beforehand.

I knew about the game back in the demo days in /v/ because [sp] people posting r34 of goatmom constantly [/sp] and only got reminded when I saw another thread when the game got released. I didn't have high or low expectations, just different expectations than the game turned out to be, I was waiting the game to be more dark and depressing, comparing it to the other Indie rpgs out there.
How did you all discover Undertale? I liked the demo was expecting the game to be alright. I also expected it to practically mirror the Earthbound community and not explode in popularity like it did. The very first thing I ever saw from Undertale was [sp]a gif of Toriel's SOUL shattering after killing her[/sp] with no context and I didn't realize it until I reached that part in the demo.
How did you all discover Undertale? I'd only heard about it until Joel from Vinesauce played it, but I only watched him do the very first part with flowey, then at that point I decided I wanted to play the game myself.
For me, I heard a rising buzz about it, then I watched Jim Sterling praising it, filling me with intrigue. Then I saw Jesse play through the first "chapter" on his Fan Friday and, despite his initial Pacifist approach, he killed out of frustration. Seeing Jesse goof like that, giving in to his JRPG instincts... It filled me with determination to not make the same mistake. Sure, it "spoiled" me, but it still gave me the determination to play this game, and I don't regret a single damn moment of it, or the lasting effect it's had on me.
I just happened to stumble on the thread back when it was only a 2 page topic. Checked out the demo, thought it seemed pretty cool and bought it the next day. Being able to play the game before anything got spoiled was great.
Random friend on steam was the one who got me interested in the game. It was around the time when I saw undertale popping up all over the place on YouTube, I never had any particular interest at the time so I didn't bother getting it until the last week of December.
