Undertale megathread v4 - An award winning RPG where nobody has to get hurt. YES, that STILL include
5,009 replies, posted
I heard about it after MGSV came out and people on /v/ were freaking out at how the game breaks the 4th wall.
Didn't get it until xmas from a friend, I had already seen all the boss battles, but picking up the game lore by reading everything between the battles put a lot more weight on what everyone was fighting for.
For that reason the game felt like a grind to get from each battle to the next until I got to date Papyrus and I recognized the Ace Attorney-esque music. That's what did it for me.
I just happened to stumble on the thread back when it was only a 2 page topic. Checked out the demo, thought it seemed pretty cool and bought it the next day. Being able to play the game before anything got spoiled was great.
I'm glad I picked it up the week it was released before everyone (at least outside of FP) started posting untagged spoilers for the endings.
I don't know what undertale is can someone explain it to me
How did you all discover Undertale? I'd only heard about it until Joel from Vinesauce played it, but I only watched him do the very first part with flowey, then at that point I decided I wanted to play the game myself.
A couple friends of mine got obsessed with it and were telling me to check it out. Wasn't interested in it at first, then I got it for christmas and instantly fell in love with it :v:
BTW, I pretty much finished Megalovania on my 3DS

Would appreciate any comments for changes/ anything that sounds wrong. I'm only one set of ears.
For some reason, when you said on your 3DS I was kind of expecting it to be on WarioWare D.I.Y., ahaha.
Which I've actually done myself.

Basically same deal here minus trying the demo. I was just bored and just wanted something to play, and I'm a sucker for indie games. saw positive early reactions here so decided "sure why the fuck nottttttttttttttttt"

I jumped in before the hype really kicked into full gear, I had heard good things and some looking around got me very curious about certain elements of the game.
I got it not expecting much, but instead found something amazing.
I then got two more friends to try it and they both love it too.

Humanity has long since destroyed itself in a global nuclear war. In a last ditch effort for survival, nations from around the globe tuck some of their population into heavily shielded stasis pods to survive the radiation and hopefully recultivate the planet in the future. Hundreds of years later, in a city near Mt. Ebott, only a single pod has managed to survive in the local shelter. A small child stumbles out, confused and afraid. Desperately searching for food and survivors, they attempt to climb the nearby mountain in an attempt to survey the area. While on the mountain, they accidentally stumble and fall into a great underground cavern where an ancient forgotten evil race lies in wait, plotting a terrible vengeance on the remnants of mankind. Searching for LOVE from anyone they can find, the child confronts the ancient horrors with a new sense of determination. Can humanity survive against this new threat against their species? A return of the terrors from the past?
Undertale is the first in a planned trilogy of a post apocalyptic RPGs dealing with a forgotten evil that has observed humanity's downfall and now plans to eradicate what remains and take the planet for themselves.

wow spoilers
When I played Undertale the first time I saw Papyrus I thought he would be like a real mean Skeleton boss that you'd fight later.
My first exposure Undertale was a combination of this and the Spaghetti Papyrus Steam background with zero context.

My impression was that he was self-important to the point of parody but kind of edgy toward the player. I was half correct, I guess.
Ahh... That music never gets old on my map.

I think sans is the biggest 'surprise' I've had in entire game as far as characters go because...(full story spoilers)[sp]he just comes out as a comical lazy skeleton when we first encounter him, especially with the mazes, and I wasn't expecting anything more out of him. Then, he is the one talking to you on mobile phone at the end of Neutral playthrough, essentially becoming a core character of the plot so he establishes as your eternal friend, and of coure in Pacifist he is there. Then in Genocide route we see a familiar sans, yet insanely brutal because of all the shit you have done in Genocide he makes you pay for it, hard, really fucking hard. He is a character that I never expect to get pissed off about anything anymore, and then at the end of Genocide it's pretty much you fighting a still-smiling sans that brutally annihilates you with no mercy. I fucking love it. He's pretty much the only character in the game that has an arch like this, that expands the whole 'don't go against him' thing.[/sp] I don't know, I have a massive appeal to him because of this.
She's gonna do a genocide run now.
Boy oh boy.
My sister tried to do a pacifist run, but she killed Greater Dog then saved.
[sp]Now I'm trying to convince her to do a genocide run just so I can see her try to fight Sans[/sp]

That's second to killing Papyrus. :(

I knew about the Undertale kickstarter but didn't pay attention to it, when the game actually came out I came across an insane person buying dozens of copies and giving them to strangers, so I asked for one.
I found out about it from Dodger's first stream. I saw up to the Toriel fight and bought it immediately after.
when i first saw Undertale I thought Papyrus was like some kind of hub character that gave you advice (think Navi from LoZ)
I find it interesting that no one who I saw play Undertale wondered why Flowey says "you'll die and you'll die and you'll die" or when Mettaton says "and then you'll die a lot" on the first time.

but he totally is
[sp] if you arent a DIRTY BROTHER KILLER. [/sp]
My friend said "play Undertale and I'll play Tales from the Borderlands" because I kept telling him it's a great game. I played Undertale expecting nothing, first impression was weird and then when Papyrus and sans appeared my interest in the game incremented with every tenth minute. Loved it.
'The friend' still haven't played Tales from the Borderlands.
I do agree that most of the Undertale community exagerates a lot when it comes to the more tragic and sad aspects of the game. And likes to make a mountain out of ant hill when comes to Sans Backstory.
But I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy the more subtle and darker fanart related to the Genocide route and [sp] Chara[/sp].
I remember hearing about Undertale a few months before release, all over the place.
Certainly not nearly as widespread as it became eventually, but I did catch on that there was some hype going on for this game.
I never actually really bothered to check out what the game was, or what it was about though.
It went like this, until it actually released.
With the hype everywhere, I finally decided to check out what the dealio was.
However, I didn't even get to make it all the way to the Steam page first.
I ended up catching a WebM of someone going through the Muffet fight, and it blew my mind.
Not from a technical, or even graphical standpoint, but I just remember seeing it, and going:
"Wait a minute, RPGs can do that?"
I loved the music, the visual style, everything.
After seeing that little snippet of the Muffet fight, I immediately went to the Steam store and bought the game.
The craziest thing is, I don't think I've ever jumped on, or bought a game that quickly in my life.
As a sucker for a unique RPG, it kinda grabbed me by the balls.
Best 9 bucks I've spent in a long time.
i saw payrus' trash can quote before i knew anything about the game
i don't know why but i thought that he was some form of antagonist character
doom has made me think of skeletons as nothing but agitation
then undertale happened and now i'm confused
Same.
I saw the pics in LMAO pics and that got me curious, and when my friend started gushing about it, I decided I've flippantly spent more than $10 on stupider things, so I bought it.
Excellent investment imo.
The sad thing is, I thought Undertale was a scary RPG, so I checked if there were any jumpscares or something, and next thing I know I was watching all the endings... I wish I forgot everything about Undertale to play it again without spoiling anything.
