That said, I saw him without a t-shirt the first time too, but upon close inspection he seemed to be fully clothed underneath.

I know the difference between a zipper and a ribcage, and I know His battle sprite has zippers.
Anyway, I looked a bit closer and I could see the white shirt there. it had a collar that wasn't right around his neck, revealing some of the ribcage behind, which threw me off.
But what's confusing me is this:

Like how artists have to use folds in clothing to make it look less like a plank

I could probably find you the specific versions of the themes in which Toby took inspiration from specifically, but that would take too long.
Having played each game in the main series I could recognize that the themes were based of AA near instantly
