There's a free demo that encompasses the tutorial and first area. You can see with your own eyes instead of taking our word for it if you'd rather form your own opinion.

Just play it, I felt pretty much the same as you do now until I said fuck it and tried it. It's something you really gotta play to get why people love it I say. If you'd rather not drop the 10 bucks for some reason, there is a demo. But I say it is silly because of the refund system. It took me far less than 2 hours to know I was in for a good time.
We could list out all the things it does right, but in the end giving it a shot is the most telling. The least you know and expect from it, the better.

Basically whether or not you like it depends 80% on whether the humor appeals to you. If the humor falls flat for you, you probably won't like any of the characters and it'll be completely disinteresting.

if it doesn't interest you at all from the get go, just don't play it. it's a very good game but it's also a pretty niche game.

it's about a kid falling into a cave populated by some p weird dudes and trying to escape, but not really at all, there's a metaplot alongside the fantasy adventure arc but nothing too cryptic or pretentious and it's pulled off nicely, and you get it on steam.
edit: oh and the devs pranked people into playing a cute rpg that can turn out to be quite depressing in the end.

as someone who saw that name everywhere before i played undertale, i can tell you that it never occurred to me that [sp] frisk is their own person or whatever, i just assumed it was the generic name of the protag, like commander jane/john shepard etc etc [/sp]
