I thought it was more of a way to emphasize that [sp]the music during the fight isn't for Sans, it's for you. If the fight was more about Sans, then the Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans would play instead of Megalovania.[/sp]

The Song that Might Play When you Fight Sans is actually the song that plays during the 'pacifist fight' Which tricks you into thinking he's the easiest monster to beat ever.

So I got this game recently. Been having a ton of fun with it. Just one question: Is it natural for people to get their ass kicked in the Core their first time through? Also, any advice at all for these later stages aside from purchase all the consumables?

The Core's got some of the toughest encounters in the game, so it's no surprise. But they give a great amount of Gold for Mercy, so keep that in mind if you need to stock up on consumables or feel you need to prepare your stats with the best gear possible.

If you kept the Stick you can spare Madjick without him attacking you and also gain a rating bonus against Mettaton. Not much, but there.
Also if you're having trouble with consumables, just go back to Snowdin, cinnabuns heal you to full and are only 25g

As far as the CORE goes, you only have to complete one of the two paths to open the way to The End, The Sage's path (the puzzle room) is less dangerous, but the Warrior's path (the long corridor full of monsters) nets you a LOT of gold, plus it has some unique enemies. I played the game four times and never knew that until I saw someone do it on an LP.

Also, standing up to Astigmatism makes you able to spare any other monsters with it.
