[sp]Chara is the original human that fell down, became friends with Asriel, and then died. Frisk is the one who fell down recently, and Chara possessed Frisk. Depending on the playthrough:[/sp]
True Pacifist: [sp]Chara apparently either has no control over Frisk and fades away or even becomes peaceful, no longer wanting to kill everything and leaves Frisk alone.[/sp]
Neutral: [sp]Chara has some control over Frisk, but it's not enough or more defensive depending on if you killed a lot, or a few. Frisk still has some control.[/sp]
Genocide: [sp]Chara takes over at the end of the Genocide run, and then forces Frisk to sell their soul to reset, meaning Chara now has full control over Frisk, leading to...[/sp]
[sp]Souless Pacifist: After Frisk saves everyone, they get possessed by Chara, as shown in both endings. Instead of Frisk sleeping in or a picture of their friends, Chara wakes up inside Frisk and laughs in stay with Toriel ending or Chara is smiling while Frisk's friends' heads are X'd out in places to go ending. This implies that Chara is now Frisk and is planning to kill everyone or already has done so in the endings.[/sp]

yeah there is a sans version which was the first one and that got really popular so people decided to put what you as the play would be saying (or frisk not sure)

Pretty much anyone who's into the show will very strongly insist yes. A lot of people don't like it or won't watch it for... less than good reasons, though.
At the risk of derailing and/or sounding preachy:
[sp]I personally love it, but there's a lot you have to wade through at first because it's not a slice-of-life show but it starts out kind of disguised as one; it takes like 20 episodes to really get to the meat of the show and that's a considerable time investment even at 10 min. per episode. I was able to sit through it because I knew what was coming but many people I've tried introducing to the show watched 3 or 4 episodes and decided not to based on that - some of them watched it in order, some of them watched it at random (which is an awful choice, especially considering the ones they watched at random were huge spoilers or made no sense without proper context). I'm talking like watching plot-critical episodes without knowing any of the reason why things are happening and being completely unable to follow, or writing off episodes with heavy or revelatory stuff as being "randumb".
To expand on the "less than good reasons", it's usually stuff like "ew I don't like lesbians" or "I hate the art style" or "the characters are really annoying" or "hurr its a SJW show" which are complaints with varying degrees of legitimacy. The art style improves a bit over time (but it's mostly how the characters stop being off-model, since early episodes were really all over the place with quality), and characters develop over time, so complaints about Steven being an annoying kid (which was a legitimate complaint in the first season) or stuff like that gradually stop having weight to them.[/sp]
Its got a similar fanbase to this, I guess, with a similar level of excitement over it, and people going around insisting it's a great show are similar to the people who like this game who go around insisting it's a great game - they're really enthusiastic about something they enjoy that does happen to be pretty good, but they'll frequently exaggerate just how good it is.

I was genuinely disappointed that I couldn't have a bit of tea with Asgore before we fought and tell him that they're this chronically depressed squid thing and I think he wants to join his friends in the aquarium but he's being passive aggressive about it....?
And then maybe tell him that his wife/girlfriend/clone person is living in the exact same layout of house as his in the ruins.
And I dunno maybe try to get him to show me his lovely garden.

Undertale prequel idea: [sp]you play as the First Human, Chara. You live with Toriel and Asgore. Sans and papyrus aren't around yet, but Gerson is a competent warrior still in his peak. Alphys and Gaster work together to create the Core along with really weird space-time contraptiond. You can be a dick to Asriel and get items and benefits at his expense, poison Asgore with pie, and make Gaster have an "accident" at the Core (im just making shit up now). You can get an ending where your plan succeeds and you posses Asriel and destroy humanity. The neutral ending is the canon ending, i.e. what is implied to have happened before Undertale. Alternatively you can bebreally nice to everyone, save Gaster, so he and Alphys find a way out of the Underground using DETERMINATION experiments.[/sp]
