That's exactly what it means. Your Comp icon changes white and gold and has the number on it that you are instead of what your rank is.

I thought it just meant you are about to rank up, because I got that before while being like rank 50

When competitive was just released there was a bug that made it so you had the emblem yourself when you shouldn't have. I remember both my friends and me having it, but we couldn't see each other's white emblems and it simply showed our ranks. Still, I'm not exactly sure what it means.

It means you're top 500 in the region you're playing. It was bugged up until yesterday so it didn't correctly show, or didn't show at all. Seems that in europe it starts at around 78 right now.

Frankly I feel half of competitive is luck in not getting a team full of idiots.
I had some 4 man group who would not stop complaining in chat that no one was doing their job and blah blah blah, while I got 4 gold medals as Zarya and our Lucio got 4 silvers and a gold and we were the two outsiders. Fantastic work.
I just got my first sextuple kill. It was on the first point of King's Row with Zarya.
Also, I witnessed a Reaper get decakill yesterday after he killed everyone and then ulted when they got revived

Depends.
I honestly find you lose the most comp matches when people pick defense heroes. If someone insta-locks Mei, Hanzo or Bastion you're pretty much confirmed to be in for a rough ride.
Lost countless matches all fucking morning and my rank tanked because of it, but at least there were a few sweet moments like this one.

I'm going from learning to dislike KotH and liking every other mode to loving KotH and hating every other mode because there is no coinflip in KotH, the better team actually wins.
