All this Mei talk makes me realize I've only ever played against one or two meis that were legit good and were a big reason for their victory. Most of the time I'm happy to see a Mei on the other team becuase I think of it as a wasted slot

mei has an extremely low skill ceiling
the best mei player in the world is roughly on par with a slightly above average mcree
I love when a mei tries to get in my barrier field as Reinhardt to try and freeze me.

Using the wall effectively takes good coordination, but yeah it's not individual skill.

Her ability to kill with W+M1>Rmb has a low skill cieling. Her ability to place ice walls that don't fuck up her team has a fairly high skill cieling.
Also, as a Lucio main, I've not seen any of my team mates get frozen from her ult in a looong time. Speed boooost!

The game isn't just about the competitive scene, it's also about fun. Right now all of the heroes are fun to play whether they're the "best" or not.
So for the first time ever I went fucking nuclear on a teammate in Overwatch.
Numbani. Fuck this map. I've probably lost damn near every competitive Numbani I've ever played. If you can't defend the first point then the game entirely comes down to coinflip. Somehow were were making the impossible happen though. Seven minute defense on the last point, down to the last 30 seconds. They just blew a shitton of ultimate so they have nothing to push hard with. Our Zarya still has ultimate. Fifteen seconds. I tell our Zarya that she should ultimate away from the cart so they can't push it into overtime. Easy win. Fucking amazing. We actually held on Numbani somehow. Now we just needed to look deep inside ourselves and not be fuckups and push to almost the end.
With ten seconds left in the match, our Zarya runs to the underpass, ulties on the corner, and catches no one. It wasn't even enough time passed for them to run that far from spawn. Nothing happened. She just wasted an ultimate on nothing. With five seconds left, the entire enemy team comes barreling around the corner, kills everyone, enemy Zarya got ultie and caught three, and we lost the match.
I immediately blow up on this guy in a way I haven't yelled at someone since one of the last times I played Dota.
We pushed way faster then they did but comp doesn't run off stopwatch so we went to coinflip and lost.
I was probably reported by that guy and I don't regret it. Fuck Numbani and fuck that retard Zarya.

You don't need a competitive scene to make balance important, simply having 2 teams of equal skill is going to highlight it. Not everybody plays to win, but nobody plays to lose.

What I mean is in a regular game of people just playing for fun it's already balanced; even if it's mostly defence heroes on the defence and attack heroes on the attack. It's only in the tournament scene where you rarely see the defence heroes since their skill is so high that the higher DPS characters are always going to be more useful.
