Right now the fixed animations are giving me troubles. I've prioritised the position of the hammer over everything else, so the hammer looks good, but not the trigger or left hand position. This means the gun is much further forward than usual. This looks passable in first person, but crap in third.
If I move it to make the hand line up with the grip/trigger instead, the thumb clips completely into the receiver and pulls the hammer inside. I'll try and come up with a compromise, or just use the sawn off shotgun animations and skip the hammer entirely.

I think that grip position is more important than hammer position, personally. I'd align the grip correctly and use the sawn-off animations like you said. It'd be unfortunate to lose the hammer stuff, but it would look better in the end, in my opinion.

Personally I say keep it as it is, its the best compromise and realistically, 3rd person when using it you wont notice the funky hand placement as your camera will be behind the character 80% of the time.
Honestly if it works 100% in first person and it kinda works in third, go with it.
Besides, it's unlikely you're going to be using it outside power armor (where the third person issue seems more apparent) most of the time if you manage to get in the penalties.

For the distance the gun barrel is at, wouldn't using a normal map for the bevels be better? or am I getting ahead of myself and you planned on doing that?
