Well the thing is, my apartment is pretty small, so paying a premium price for the Vive and its laser tracking would be a complete waste of money. I'll get the Rift, set up the two tracking cameras to face my sofa (once they come out later) and basically use that ~2-3 metre tracking area for whatever. And the Touch controllers are way better than the Vive's wands in the first place, so it's not really a contest for me.
I can handle playing on an xbox controller for a month while they work on releasing the Touches.
but the lighthouses will work with whatever space you have, and will be more accurate - plus I think the consumer vive controllers will easily be competitive with the touch controllers
then also think about the hardware
if youre worried about space issues, you can just put the lighthouses on your desk

I am going to wait. I have a dk1 and I just don't think rushing to buy one will lead to anything other than regret. I like the oculus controller shape and ergonomics, I have a ten by ten foot space for vr available so the vive lighthouse is better there, and I don't know which will offer a better experience in terms of visual fidelity. The price difference, unless on the order of double, should be secondary to those considerations for me.

you can get your position from reflection off of surfaces, eg the walls.
(Not entirely serious) overview of locomotion methods in VR, with their pros and cons.

One of the headsets being released by December would be awesome so I could show it around when the whole darn family comes over for Christmas.
Vive only has a limited release at first, the full release is in Q1 just like the Rift
Are there any examples of games that use that "Astral Body" thing? Because despite the fact that the author says that people who call it immersion breaking are assholes, just from the way he described it, I cant see how it would be just as/more immersive than a full FPS game.
But Ive never seen it so I have nothing to go off of :v:

considering this plus how good the steampad is I'm thinking I should get the vive

More info about the limited release? Is it just for devs or something?

Probably same as for the controller, limited quantity at first
Finally had an opportunity to try out the Oculus Rift. I can safely say that it (and other versions like it) is the future of gaming.

this looks like so much fun! I can't wait until I can get my hands on this stuff.

Which version was it?
Which version was it?
Not sure. It was at the Life Centre in Newcastle, where they were running a special exhibition on the history of gaming (including its future). It looked like an older version, though.
For those that wanted to go to the Dutch VR days but couldn't/didn't want to pay, it turns out they're streaming the conference day on their website.
Conference day is this Thursday. Valve's Chet Faliszek is on a panel as well. Schedule here
Free demo day (to which I'm definitely going) is on Saturday.

It was probably a DK2 in all likelyhood.
And I think what Orkel was gonna say is that if you thought that was good, the version we will be getting Q1 of next year is going to be even better.

this'll make it easier

left is DK1, right is DK2. Images aren't to scale with each other, DK1 is larger, both have the same sized segment that meets your face
DK1.
Haha. You're in for a hell of a ride if your next experience is with the consumer version
Pretty sure the only one I've seen is the DK1 too, really excited to make the leap.
SONY: PlayStation VR a massive hit with PS4 fans, many want to buy it
The problem is, how to get people to try it so they want to buy it.
I read an article over on The Verge of a theme park company that's making a virtual World's Fair for VR.
That's exciting.

Also Crytek's game specifically:

Doesn't really show how the VR aspect ties into it though.
I love the "argument" against VR that's basically "you look stupid while wearing a headset", yeah because people seriously care about what they look like when they're sitting for hours on end in front of a monitor while scratching their balls
