When is the VR community expecting the next big news? Some event date that's set? I had been under the impression that preorders would open this month, but all is silence.
Nate said a while back that they want only "weeks" between the launch of preorders and the Rift being at your doorstep. So the Rift preorders are probably going up in December. The Vive preorders on the other hand are very likely to go up this month, since the they ship limited in December.

What makes you sure that it will release in January? [editline]14th November 2015[/editline] besides competition

Though that doesn't seem right and feels like too short of a time span, especially before holidays/holiday shipping problems
I heard Oculus was releasing in "Q1" 2016. What makes you sure that it will release in January?
Well its been confirmed that preorders are this year. Even if they are as late as dec 31. Also, luckey and others at oculus have repeatedly said they want as little time as possible between preorders and shipping. Also I can't remember if this was a quote or speculation, but somebody said to think of it like apple's strategy with preorders like a week before shipping. So in short, we aren't sure it will be january, but we have evidence that it will be sooner rather than later. [editline]14th November 2015[/editline]
Yeah I pretty seriously doubt people are gonna be getting Rifts in January
it's possible and there's only one way to know.
it's possible and there's only one way to know.
oh yeah sure its possible, but when a company gives a range of dates, as opposed to saying "January 2016", in all likelyhood that's because they want to give themselves more time to work stuff out without disappointing people
Just got a devkit today and I'm already having trouble, and can't seem to find an answer for this. When I open up the config utility this is all I see. In every guide I've seen there's more options and stats displayed here, in fact I can't even update the firmware or change the display mode. I made sure it was the latest version and everything, the hell am I doing wrong here?
What happens when you go to Change Display Mode (in Tools)? Just greyed out or errors or something?
What happens when you go to Change Display Mode? Just greyed out?
There's simply no 'Change Display Mode' option, not in any of the menu options. It's like I got the simplified version for some reason.
They're removing support for Extended mode, because Direct mode is the only one they plan to develop for (because it is better, when it isn't suffering bugs). Nothing is wrong with your configuration menu. It is the same as mine. If you need to update firmware it will let you at that time.

Should I just download an older version and run with that?

Never tried them with my DK2, only early on with my DK1.
That's your only option, but you can't rely on outdated content forever. Installed 0.6.0.1 and so far everything's running ship-shape. Maybe I'm just unlucky with SteamVR right now but whatever works for now. [editline]14th November 2015[/editline] Also this thing is fucking cool. I was just playing Neos Universe and once I dipped my head into the virgo supercluster I was getting chills.
Looks like my father is also planning to upgrade his PC for a Rift of his own. Who needs to visit their family in real life anyway
I'm wondering what to do. I really want to get a vive when it comes out (this year, right?). However, my PC has a GFX card bottleneck in the form of a R9 270X But I don't really also want to upgrade my PC cause I'll be doing military shit (conscription) for 11 months starting summer 2016, and just buying an entire new PC when I come back summer of 2017. So question, will a bottleneck of R9 270X still be able to handle a vive/rift enough on older/less resource intensive games and apps for a few months?
It might be worth it to upgrade just your GFX card because I've had people tell me my 750 Ti wasn't enough.
That's the thing, I'll only be using the card for a few months and getting a new PC in 2017 after 11 months of inactivity.

With the lower-end cards you mainly have to watch out that they don't get bandwidth-starved when doing VR. The drop in framerate for games moving from 1080p@60hz to 2160x1200@90hz (on an even bigger 3K rendertarget) is usually much bigger on lower end cards relative to higher end, simply because they weren't designed for handling it.
That's the thing, I'll only be using the card for a few months and getting a new PC in 2017 after 11 months of inactivity.
It seems to me that the best thing for you to do would be to wait and just buy the card and the Vive in 2017. I think it's reasonable to believe that the price will have gone down by then.
If you don't mind having graphics on low how demanding is the rendering? I mean I plan on having a 980 for VR but presumably the 970/980 are recommended because you can get decent graphical quality while retaining framerate, could you not presumably run much lower graphics settings and get decent performance with weaker cards? Would be good to know in case a friend has a card that will pull off less powerful stuff just to demo it or something.
http://www.wired.com/2015/11/360-video-isnt-virtual-reality/ Too late. Google has already poisoned the well.
I wish the media would realize that we can't ever put the genie back in the bottle...
I just hope they'll announce a pre-order date soon, I really don't want to miss out on getting my hands on virtual reality as soon as possible.
I can only see two ways it'll happen: 1) They announce an "event" about the Rift with no details, even though anyone can guess it'll be about pre-orders. They do a bunch of marketing talk bullshit and recap their "road" from the kickstarter till today, and then the pre-orders go up. Oculus website gets flooded and dies. 2) Sudden oculus blog post about pre-orders going up with no prior warning. Oculus website gets flooded and dies.
3) sudden oculus blog about pre-orders goes up, followed by a link to a dead end page. Beneath that link you find some subtext eluding to a set of riddles, ultimately leading you to a phone number with an automated answering machine, to which you can enter the pass phrase. You'll get a call back an hour later with a personal code to add to the dead-end URL to secure your pre-order
4) John Carmack creates those riddles, the first person to get a Rift appears in 2034
4) John Carmack creates those riddles, the first person to get a Rift appears in 2034
When watching the footage of Carmack's live scripting session from OC2, my only real takeaway after seeing him type code (and fumble quite a bit) was "thank god he's still human".
castAR developer kit to be out around 2016 (pretty much on par to DK2), and consumer around 2017. http://vrfocus.com/archives/25026/castar-outline-developer-and-consumer-hardware-reveal-timelines/
