There are actually 500+ euro bids on 2nd hand DK2s on Ebay. Damn.
For what purpose? You can get DK2s for 300 USD in certain places...
We're going to see a shit ton of new ideas, new games and genres when VR takes off in a few months
I think that time has technically passed since VR headsets have been release to developers for a while.
There'll probably be more ideas a year out when VR has more momentum and is more popular.
I wonder, do lens flares look as unnatural and bothersome in VR as they do in fps games ordinarily?

Share your experiments with the world through Oculus Concepts
We're excited to announce that Oculus Concepts is now available on Gear VR! Concepts is a new part of the Oculus Store where developers can distribute experimental apps and games, and give people early access to their content.
[t]https://s3.amazonaws.com/static.oculus.com/website/2015/11/concepts2.2.jpg[/t]
Concepts is also a great way to discover content that’s on the bleeding edge of VR development. You can download and purchase apps in the new Concepts section of the Oculus Store.
Developers can submit apps to Concepts starting today -- all the details are in the Gear VR Submission Guidelines.
Many of the best VR games on the Oculus platform were heavily influenced by getting out to the community early. We hope Concepts helps developers continue to take risks, share ideas early, and define the future of VR gaming and entertainment. We look forward to your feedback as we continue to add new features to Concepts in the coming months.

I would expect that they wouldn't use lens flares and just do a blinding glare effect like when looking at the actual sun, and dirty effect if wearing goggles or in a mech or something.

I wish I bought a DK2 now
I wonder, do lens flares look as unnatural and bothersome in VR as they do in fps games ordinarily?
Depends. When playing with Unity I found that the default lens flares didn't work out since they rotate with the camera, which looks unnatural in VR.
if you're gonna do lens flars in VR it has to be on a per-eye basis and relative to the light source rather than the camera angle.
bonus points for slightly different lens flare artifacting for each eye.
Lens flare only happens in cameras, why would you even consider putting it in VR
Unless you wear dirty glasses but even then that has nothing to do with the """""""""cinematic"""""""" lens flare that people insist on using
Lens flare only happens in cameras
a lot of people equate the viewport to a camera, it's even called a camera in a lot of games.

Mario 64 is a third person game viewed through an actual camera.

doesn't change the fact that 99% of people that play 3d video games still equate any viewport as a camera and not eyeballs, even FPS.

The term camera is still universally used in games and especially in development
lens flare only makes sense to me in Talos Principle because you play a robot
that's the only game it actually WORKS for me
I love lens flares and there's nothing you can do to stop me.
but 3d lensflare is something i can't get behind
Basically every viewport in games and other 3D applications is called a camera, but that doesn't mean you should always have a lens flare.
Whenever I see a discussion on lens flare I think of this

I get the purpose of bloom and color grading but to be honest step 15 looks the best to me and everything after looks like garbage. I bet it would look fine with no lens flare, low glare, weaker bloom, and color grading that isn't an awful, murky color.
I love getting graphics mods that change the color/shading a but and try to emulate how the human eye sees things rather than how a camera sees them, I want that in VR
Question regarding PC upgrades for VR: what kind of connectors will the CV1/Vive be using? Oculus recommends the 970 as the "this shit will work" card, but they also say that the Oculus needs 2 HDMI ports. Most 970s Ive been seeing have only one HDMI port and a bunch of displayport ports. Are they expecting us to be using converters here, or will the CV1/Vive most likely be using displayport by the time they come out?

Afaik it'll just use one HDMI cable. 2160x1200@90hz just about squeezes into the HDMI 1.4's bandwidth limit. The Vive has just one HDMI slot too (at same res and refresh rate).
[editline]22nd November 2015[/editline]
They'll probably move to either HDMI 2.0 or DisplayPort in the future.

Oh wow yeah, totally misread that, it requires two USB ports, not two HDMI cables :v:

well that's pretty exciting if they can pull it off, a 40% boost to FPS is fucking huge in VR terms
Looks like the Gear VR had a pretty successful launch since it's sold out everywhere.
Next phone I buy might have to be a GearVR-compatible one.

I wish it had. I preordered my Gear VR two weeks ago through Amazon, and this morning I cancelled my order to go place an order through Samsung's official website because Amazon hadn't said anything regarding receiving their shipment or shipping them out to customers. Not 5 hours after I cancel my order, reports come in that Amazon started shipping out their orders. The whole launch has been a clusterfuck, and now I probably won't even receive mine from Samsung for another two weeks.
:suicide:

I'm seeing commercials for it on big network TV too! Really exciting for the industry.
