So when will google start accepting human donations? cause i will sell my body for this shit if it works that well.
Here's an in-depth Magic Leap article by the way, a great read: http://www.technologyreview.com/featuredstory/534971/magic-leap/
I’m sitting behind a workbench in a white-walled room in Dania Beach, Florida, in the office of a secretive startup called Magic Leap. I’m staring wide-eyed through a pair of lenses attached to what looks like metal scaffolding that towers over my head and contains a bunch of electronics and lenses. It’s an early prototype of the company’s so-called cinematic-•reality technology, which makes it possible for me to believe that the muscular beast with the gruff expression and two sets of swinging arms is actually in the room with me, hovering about seven feet in front of my face.

The smallest demo hardware I’ve seen at Magic Leap can’t yet match the experience of the bigger demo units. It includes a projector, built into a black wire, that’s smaller than a grain of rice and channels light toward a single see-through lens. Peering through the lens, I spy a crude green version of the same four-armed monster that earlier seemed to stomp around on my palm. In addition to improving the resolution of smaller units, Magic Leap will have to cram in sensors and software that will track your eyes and fingers, so you can control and interact with its virtual creatures—which themselves will have to incorporate real-life objects into whatever they appear to be doing.
Is Magic Leap sort of where Google funneled the glass tech? Because it sounds like that's where it went, since we're seeing so much more about that while they've scaled back Glass considerably.
I still want one, but Magic Leap seems to be doing more of what Glass wanted to do at the start. It seems more in-line with the priorities of the project.

Wouldn't this mean that glasses can also be super thin too? Because my lenses are fucking thick as hell and this would be amazing.
Wouldn't this mean that glasses can also be super thin too? Because my lenses are fucking thick as hell and this would be amazing.
We can only hope. It might also mean contacts and other lenses can get thinner.
I think we all could do with lighter SLR lenses.

question is though what would the cost difference be? how cost effective is this other way versus what's done now?
I REALLY hope the magic leap thing does well. Imagine if someone made a real life MMORPG for it. Killing orcs, dragons and other monsters in your backyard would be really cool.

I doubt the first consumer version will be like that but it's certainly going to happen within a few years.

The magic leap sounds so sci-fi, but with today's technology it's almost scary what we can accomplish
[editline]21st February 2015[/editline]
I mean imagine if you showed a Rift to someone in the 80's. They would fucking freak out

Wouldnt that be more about microsoft hololens?
Wouldnt that be more about microsoft hololens?
Well, I imagine if the magic leap could scan objects in the real world and replace them, it would have no real problem adding new ones.

But how would you create a world so big it could be used for an MMORPG? This idea seems really cool, but there's a limited space you can run to.

I was going to that if it's sort of like glasses or goggles, it could use a baseline of google maps to guess the surroundings and how much space you have to roam around in a specific area. then it could have a 4g connection or bluetooth to your phone for the connection, and stream back and forth live on any changes of what the real area looks like and stream the content. but then I realized that I don't think we have the proper tech yet because you would need some decently small yet powerful technology so it's not overly bulky for running around with. and yes, i'm saying something as big as an Oculus would be too big.
Anyone else got that their computer freezes when turning on the DK2 and then the demo scene? I have to power off my pc but it keeps happening anyone else have issues with latest nvidia drivers? They worked fine before. thought its weird.

I get what you're saying about designing the area, but surely that specific area would be too small for an MMORPG? Unless you're talking about a LoL-style MMORPG where you just get matched with a couple of people and fight off waves of enemies in the same area.

The idea plus what I was saying would be the idea of you being able to go anywhere. Like maybe you wanna start at your front door, and as you walk down the side walk, you see a goblin across the street, so you walk over and start fighting it. or you are at a park playing and there's mobs everywhere. the idea mentioned was to have the actual world with mobs and such streamed in. i'm pretty sure the vita had this idea before, though idk if it took off as i never got one. but the camera would look at the area behind your psp and would show you an enemy in front of you. you could see the scale of it.
Ah right, so it wouldn't just literally be in your backyard.
This could work and be quite awesome, but I can only imagine the strange looks you'd get, swinging your imaginary sword at an imaginary goblin.
We might not actually see anything new at GDC.
Don't get too hyped on the possibility of seeing anything at GDC. VR input is hard - in some ways, tracking hands well enough to maintain a sense of proprioceptive presence is even more technically challenging than getting perfect head tracking.
We will show something if and when we get it working well, but we have to avoid showing off prototypes that are not on a clear path to being shipped at the same or higher quality level. Throwing together very expensive or impossible to manufacture prototypes for internal R&D is one thing, using them to publicly set expectations around the near future is another.
Not naming anything specific here, but the history of technology is littered with the corpses of companies that overpromised and underdelivered by shipping real products with real limitations that were glossed over in promotional materials. Oculus can't afford to do that.

We might not actually see anything new at GDC.
I'm happy they're letting us know they will make us wait, and better everything, rather than giving us a $400 piece of shit.

that's what people said about hand-free phones
it's just a matter of people getting used to it

who fucking cares, videogames make people look like idiots anyway

I think there's a slight difference to talking to apparently no one (but still noticing that that person has got an earbud in) or seeing someone run around swinging his controller in the air.
Not to mention that this would actually be really dangerous and could possibly lead to a lot of traffic incidents.
who fucking cares, videogames make people look like idiots anyway
How? At home where almost nobody can see you? It's not just about someone playing the game, it's about running around looking like a person that's gone mentally insane.
Then again, maybe HybridTheroy is right and people will get used to it.

People would get used to it. Let's go back to when not many people used bluetooth. You saw someone with it, you probably thought they were a crazy person talking to themselves. But as time went on, more people had them, and you started being able to recognize it. eventually it'd turn out to, "oh, he has those glasses/goggles, must be playing a game."
But you are also right about the accidents, which would be a bigger problem. How would they make an expansive and immersive world, with 3d images that would have to be partially transparent so you can see what's going on around as well. I suppose you could go the route of what cars have and insert tiny cameras that are constantly searching to see if you're going to run into a wall or if a car is coming. no, this wouldn't prevent every accident, but it could possibly help. but that's also something that will take processing power and drive up the cost.

Sometimes I still feel like people think I'm crazy when I've got a call over my earbuds, but nobody seems to care.
As for this weird AR MMORPG thing you guys are suggesting, maybe it's zone locked to avoid having people walk out into traffic? Something like what Google did with their AR game, where all the major areas were public spaces that were safe for the participants.
Not to mention that this would actually be really dangerous and could possibly lead to a lot of traffic incidents.

It's not like people are going to go out to busy intersections and slap on their AR glasses and forget about reality.
If anything people will go to parks or their back yard.
Also running around and having fun doesn't make you look insane, it makes you look like you're having fun. Especially when people are more aware of the context and see you're no different from a guy at a park with HMD on flying a drone.
Also remember that the Magic Leap glasses will supposedly communicate with eachother to show the exact same stuff at the exact same position for everyone, so a group of pals running around the city in a fun AR-RPG party in 2020 won't be that weird especially since most will probably be aware of what they are by that time.
