I don't know why you all think this means valve being cut out. Valve can't just have a VR store in steam because it would either exclude oculus or be redundant to oculus's own store. Oculus moving to have their own separated marketplace puts valve, as holders of a pc-in-general game distribution platform, in the need of their own separate marketplace. In this way both headsets can also sell games on steam and their own stores without it being awkward.
Love the futuristic look on the controller
at first glance they looked like expensive vibrators at second glance they look like expensive cyberpunk themed vibrators [sp]time to give bad dragon a run for its money[/sp]

I wonder what that "very, very big breakthrough" HTC were talking about was
I wonder what that "very, very big breakthrough" HTC were talking about was
Only thing we know is that it will be at CES. http://www.engadget.com/2015/12/18/htc-vive-vr-big-breakthrough-ces/ Chet mentioned body scanning a few months ago and how excited he was about it, maybe it will be related to that?

It must be to do with the display.
:mysterysolved: Vive now has whole hand (and trashcan/bucket) tracking. Edit: the hand tracking is actually done by a third party peripheral (the glove) It is p fucking cool.
I doubt they would delay the headset over something like that. It must be to do with the display.
The headset was never delayed, it was always planned for spring 2016. The only disappointing thing was that they scrapped the small, soft launch which was for good reasons. There were serious problems with the controller design, caused by an improperly placed overlay button as well as battery issues.
I'm pretty sure it was initially supposed to be an october 2015 release.
No, they had planned for an October event to announce the soft launch but they never did that

Apparently HTC is interested in wii style third party peripherals (see the screen at 6:20).

Goddamnit why don't all hand held input devices have like 12 physical buttons on them Most of my fingers are practically just gathering dust nevermind the fact each of them could make use of several buttons

I'm fascinated by how much better Vive's hand tracking is than the Rift's, which can only recognize simple gestures with accuracy.
I'm fascinated by how much better Vive's hand tracking is than the Rift's, which can only recognize simple gestures with accuracy.
That's not the Vive's hand tracking... It's a third-party motion capture suit called the Perception Neuron that they took a glove off of and then hacked some code up to be able to use it in a demo app they made in Unity. It's just a proof of concept that 1:1 finger tracking is possible.
Oh I see. I thought I was looking at a Vive DK2 controller utilization.
snip
Oh I see. I thought I was looking at a Vive DK2 controller utilization.
the hand tracking glove gave the hand's shape, the vive strapped to his wrist gave the hand's position
All this Vive stuff is making me reconsider pre-ordering the Rift when it's available. I might go back to the original plan of waiting until both are out.
yeah I'm still not sure palmer might snag me if he announces preorders soon though, I'm weak :(
Apparently 3DMark just added a 'VRMark' to their most recent beta. Seems like a pretty good idea, given the prevalence of the software and everyone asking if their PC is good enough for VR. It's only for purchased users at the moment, but it'll probably join the demo fare once new years rolls around.
yeah I'm still not sure palmer might snag me if he announces preorders soon though, I'm weak :(
If I had to guess, I'd say preorders are going to open either Christmas Day, or the Monday/Tuesday after. Christmas Day because of obvious reasons, or the Monday/Tuesday after because everyone will have calmed down from the holidays, and it gives people a chance to deposit any cash/gift cards they got for the holidays. After that, seeing as how they've stated they want to use the Apple model, I'd say they'll announce 1 week to shipping CV1 at CES. All of this, of course, is assuming they're still on track to launch pre-orders this year.
Unfortunately, the price of the vive may impact which one I get. With the Canadian dollar the way it is right now, and how they say the vive is going to be a little more expensive than the rift, it could easily end up being $500 CAD or more. My computer is starting to get a little older and it'd be a hard decision to spend that much when I could be using it to upgrade.

But HTC might be forced to underprice the Vive to move units, we just don't know.
more than $400 will definitely turn off a lot of people, since nobody really knows how it works
more than $400 will definitely turn off a lot of people, since nobody really knows how it works
The Vive especially, but also the Rift, in a way, aren't meant for general consumption, at least not until they've been adopted and popularized by enthusiasts. [editline]19th December 2015[/editline] Well, I suppose, the Rift at least is meant for general consumption, but definitely won't be purchased by your average consumer for a while.
more than $400 will definitely turn off a lot of people, since nobody really knows how it works
I think it will be one of those gadgets that a few people buy and then show to their friends and families, convincing some of them to ultimately buy it due to how mindblowing the experience was. The majority of potential buyers will need to try it first in order to convince themselves to get one, and that's where the enthusiast consumers intervene.
everyone i've talked to (except the ones that found out themselves) just say "i tried that in the 80's/90's, it was pretty bad" - probably referring to those 2d crt shits strapped to a paperweight but even if only "enthusiasts" will buy them, there's no way they're gonna have enough units to ship at launch, that's never happened to any company :v:

Just look at The GearVR launch. For three to four weeks after launch you couldn't find one in stock anywhere. Even now it's out of stock on Amazon. The demand was immense. VR definitely has the appeal.
