crippling disappointment
crippling disappointment
The latest they'll open will be CES. It's not really crippling disappointment, seeing as how they've been delayed from opening for a... Week?

Why do people care when pre-orders open?
Why do people care when pre-orders open?
Well, the fact that HTC might announce their important breakthrough before Rift pre-orders start could be the turning point for those who are still unsure about which HMD they want to buy. People want to pre-order because in all likeliness the Rift will be sold out extremely fast and out of stock for quite a while soon after launch, and the fact that we've been waiting years for consumer VR to come out also increases the eagerness.
Why do people care when pre-orders open?
For the DK2, pre-ordering a few hours later meant having to wait for your order to arrive over a month later. I'm sure they'll have more capacity this time but I'm not taking any chances :v:
As with developer kits there will be scalpers who buy 100s of headsets to sell for markup on ebay. I wish big companies would sue them to pieces but for now it is necessary to preorder immediately.
At least we know the date now, somewhat. No more spamming f5 till the 1st.
placing bets on CES

when your running the desktop demo is it possible to see how many sensor are visible to the camera? sometimes my headset gets occluded by my steering wheel and i want to try and find a more optimal position, its already on the wall behind my desk at about 5ft so all i can do is move it up
Palmer is on a full price expectation management mode on twitter. https://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/3y20rh/palmer_luckey_tweetstorm_vr_is_expensive_today/ https://twitter.com/PalmerLuckey/status/679907802962214912 Sums it up:
Uh oh, he's gone full offensive here on a 'managing expectations' 'tweetstorm'. Nice term, never heard that before ;) The final pricing has probably shot up past anyone's expectations so he's having to prepare people for the shock.
At that point we're looking at either the Vive being four figures due to its 'premium' experience, or it actually undercutting the Rift. I don't think a $600 Rift would be good for Oculus, or Facebook. I would guess that it's more of a thing regarding the recent exposure VR has gotten on major outlets (in the last week we've seen stuff all over major internet publications, as well as this month's Game Informer being totally dedicated to VR) and managing the expectations of all of the new interest by people who think it's going to be ~300USD. I would be very very shocked to see the Rift cost more than $500.
Yeah, $500-600 wouldn't surprise me after these tweets. Also:
My point is that selling at-cost is not a silver bullet. The assumption you are making - that it will be expensive only if Oculus sells at a profit - is exactly the misconception that so many people have.
This seems to reconfirm my expectations. I would throw out a guess at around a ~450 price point at launch, but a tag like that will give 'casually' interested users sticker shock.
Funny how this was posted by a throwaway account 4 hours before Palmer went on his price softening spree. Probably coincidence.
Well... That may change things.
It's coincidence, there's no way the Rift is going to be $650. I could see 450 or even 500, but 650 is completely ridiculous. If the Rift costs 650, the Vive is going to be 800 or more.

Doesn't have to mean that the Rift itself will cost more than we, the informed, expected. [sp]:( ??[/sp]
As long as it doesn't go over £300 (About $450) I'll still be able to get one. Anything after that point gets a bit iffy for me since I also need to drop some cash on a GPU upgrade. Guess I'll just cross my fingers and hope for the best. :v:
Just looked up a pcadvisor article:
More recently in an interview with Road to VR, Oculus CEO Palmer Luckey hinted that the consumer Oculus Rift may cost more than $350. When asked if the consumer Oculus Rift would cost the same as the DK2 headset ($350) Luckey responded "You know, I’m going to be perfectly honest with you. We’re roughly in that ballpark… but it’s going to cost more than that." He followed up by trying to justify the rise in price; "And the reason for that is that we’ve added a lot of technology to this thing beyond what existed in the DK1 and DK2 days. And it’s not a matter of ‘oh we’re selling more, we can make more money!’ it’s just the reality that when you make this thing you have to decide what tradeoffs you’re going to make; are you going to optimize for absolute lowest price possible, even if it’s gonna be a lower quality experience? Or do you try to say ‘you know what, this is the first consumer VR headset that were going to be pushing out to people. We need to put a stake in the ground and say: this is the best possible experience that we were able to make. No compromises were made in terms of quality’.
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/buying-advice/gadget/oculus-rift-release-date-specs-features-hands-on-connect-keynote-3522990/ I get that it will cost more than DK2 but surely they can't justify almost doubling the price, especially if the controllers aren't included?
I can see three possible prices. 399, 449, and 499. Any more than that is becoming overkill and will likely greatly hurt their sales
Could Facebook be pressuring them for higher prices?

When asked for proofs the guy posted this pic, the absolute madman :v: [t]https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/26215793/ShareX/2015/12/2015-12-24_14-11-05.jpg[/t]
Ha yeah. The crescent bay 3 is what matters. It's likely just a crescent bay upgraded to have Touch support.
If it really is going to cost >$400 then I'm definitely waiting until both it and the Vive are out, probably for a while, before taking the plunge. If I'm dropping that much cash I don't want to end up with buyers remorse.

I don't care about the control, I already have a good one, but more than that, especially with the Canadian dollar how it is, and I simply can't afford.
