SLI/whatever other names it goes under has never given me anything but problems in my entire history of owning gaming pc's
My VR-era PC will certainly not have dual cards in it.
I never had SLI/Crossfire just because it never was a big enough difference for games that supported it properly and people always had problems with it.
But now I've been thinking about getting two GPU's for my next "VR-tier" PC since Nvidias "VR SLI" thingy.
Form what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) in in layman's terms one GPU render the right eye and the other GPU renders the left eye, seems to be a great way to do it.

That does seem like a good way of doing it but it doesn't help the cards blowing hot air on eachother
got a jab so I'll probably have enough $ to get one when commercial versions actually come out 8))
That does seem like a good way of doing it but it doesn't help the cards blowing hot air on eachother
they've been making cards that exhaust out the back of the case instead of internally for AGES now dude
[t]https://i.ytimg.com/vi/fVY_tNJXUIk/maxresdefault.jpg[/t]
you'll only have that issue if you're using open-air type cards like the one on the bottom. anything with a blower fan (like the top one) will be venting out the back
That does seem like a good way of doing it but it doesn't help the cards blowing hot air on eachother
The 'blowing hot air onto each other' making SLI/Crossfire less optimal is a myth. Modern cards have extremely low operating temperature compared to older cards, and modern open-air coolers are incredibly good at dissipating heat, even if they are nearby other components. The maximum safe operating temperature of a GTX970 approaches 100*C, and standard operating temperature of the card should rarely reach north of 75*C. In an SLI setup, you may see an increase from 2-3*C on the top card, but nowhere near enough to reduce the power or efficiency of the setup.
Temperatures only become a real issue at 3/4 card SLI setups, and if you're that insane, you're probably water cooling anyway.
Overall, SLI/Crossfire have become way, way more streamlined and efficient as time has gone on, and on a modern configuration, you're unlikely to have many problems playing newer games, especially with the recent push for 2-card setups for VR.

While relevant, it's actually not that effective, as the blower card is still inhaling hot air off the back of the card below it, and open-air cards, regardless of the fact that they exhaust inside the case, are simply so much better at cooling the GPU (due to larger heatsinks, more fans, higher CFM, etc.) that they're better in pretty much all situations. In addition, if your computer is setup in any reasonable way (a few case fans, negative pressure, and lower-than-Medusa-tier cable mangement), you should have more than enough airflow through your case to negate the effects of internal exhaust anyway.

Also, it begins hype! Ordered my 980Ti today to prepare my setup for VR, with my birthday in a week, and getting paid before the weekend, I should be prepared to pre-order at least CV1 and hopefully Touch as soon as they go up.
Speaking of which, in more directly-related-to-VR news, did anyone else not realize that CV1 and Touch preorders are going up together? Someone posted on the subreddit about it, and sure enough, that's what Oculus said. I wonder if they'll be taking that back before they launch, or if we'll be able to pre-order the Touch DK1/CV1 sometime in the next two weeks when the Rift preorders launch.

(~2:50)
Thought it was common knowledge preorders of both the Rift and Touch would go up at the same time. Guess they should've repeated it more often.
That's interesting news, especially considering they're still not seemingly going to be coming out together. If they somehow announced that Touch will be going out with the CV1, I'd be very tempted to get back into bed with Oculus rather than Vive. Who knows.
I'll probably buy a rift as my first entry into VR and once I get a better paying job i'll hop on over and check out the Vive.
VR titles are not going to be locked to one particular headset right?

Certain titles won't, certain titles will. It depends.
I'll be getting the 980 as well but I'm going to wait for the rift preorders to reveal the shipping date first.
Apparently pre-orders for Oculus Rift and Touch will open at the same time. (At 2:50)

Dual 970's for vr for me
I'll be getting the 980 as well but I'm going to wait for the rift preorders to reveal the shipping date first.
Here was my reasoning:
1. Oculus's 'we want to ship within a few weeks of pre-orders opening', I chose to be optimistic and assume this means 2/3/4 weeks of opening preorders, instead of months. This puts the Rift's release in late January/early February. That's months ahead of any speculated Pascal launch date.
2. Pascal could launch any time from the beginning of Q2 2016, all the way up until the end of 2016, we have no way of knowing except for street rumors, and nVidia hasn't released any information on it yet (release date-wise).
3. Pascal is a die shrink and new architecture, it's a bit risky, and I have too many bad memories of the Kepler launch to put money on it.
4. Despite the hype, GPU power has been plateauing recently, with only ~10% increases between generations. So unless nVidia has something big with Pascal (besides HBM, which won't really be taken advantage of for a generation or so, and which they very very well could have in store, as a sucker punch to AMD, and would explain their tight lips about Pascal...) the jump in performance will really be more like a hop.
5. If previous generations are anything to go by, you'd want to wait for the 1080Ti instead of the 1080, or get the 1070, in order to get the most bang for your buck. However, the *70 and *80Ti don't come out for about three months after the debut of the new generation. So you'd be waiting even longer.
Finally, it's just my belief that if you spend all your time waiting for the next generation of tech (as long as it's not completely imminent, like, launch in the next couple of weeks), you'll always be waiting for next-gen.
Also, my current GPU is getting old anyway, and I just bought BF4 and Talos Principle, and I like pretty graphics, so I wanted to upgrade soon anyway. v:v:v

I bought a 290X a while ago used for cheap, that should do me for at least the first year of VR. I'm assuming VR games will still have graphics options for less beefy systems.
Though I'm still rocking an i7-860 which is definitely being upgraded at some point, when I'm not busy either with uni or being poor. Usually both.
I have two overclocked 265's, and I'm hoping it will be enough.

I'll be getting the standard 980 instead of the 980ti. The 980ti costs over 800€ in Finland, whereas I can get the 980 for a bit over 550€. I need the money difference for VR games and the Rift itself.

Ah. That's a shame. In the states the Ti is only ~100USD more than the 980, depending on model and vendor. It really sucks that there's such a gap in pricing and the factor of importing when it comes to tech, there have been a lot of pretty vocal people on the Oculus subreddit saying that if the price is more than expected, it means that a lot of people in Europe won't be able to get one due to VAT and import fees being a percentage of the product value, rather than a flat rate, not to mention simply being inflated.
Hopefully Oculus works something out for international customers, so that everyone can enjoy the opening days of VR.

Only the first 2 mins are about the upcoming VR tech, the remaining time is all spent on one soldier's experience and shitty Sony HMZ goggles.

Actually I assumed the touch wasn't even ready yet
Apparently someone didn't know how to correctly detach the Rift headphones :v:

When are the new Pascal cards supposed to come out? Im pretty heavily considering a 980 (ti maybe) right now but if the pascal cards are coming out before/very close to the arrival dates of Vive/Oculus I might wait.

It hasn't been officially announced yet. Very, very tentative rumors say Q2 2016, but it could be any time past that, no one knows.

I feel like now he's just seinding out tweets to keep us occupied and excited for 'even more games!'. Also, he's sort of boasting now about how good his company is.

I think we had this discussion already but I completely disagree with point number 4, all signs are pointing to Pascal being a jump of around 40%. Obviously like you mention, your circumstances and the other points you mention mean it's probably still a good plan to get a 980 for you - I'm personally sticking with my SLI GTX 670's until Pascal and I'll probably get the topmost card to last me for years.

Also another interesting tidbit in the thread:
there seems to be some sort of semi-reflective material inside on the edges which 'blur' out the edges (past the screen, not on it!), you cannot see the edges, this made it VERY hard to get an accurate reading (and is probably why Oculus won't give us a solid number). The usable field of view is definitely wider than the DK2 according to some tests I did. After spending hours with it the viewing area is almost a square landscape (4:3ish?) viewing area, unlike the DK2's portrait viewing area.
